Education is an important part of a country. Even back in 500 BC educators were debating over the importance of education and how people should be taught. Confucius believed education should lead to self-improvement above all. As a student who receives Chinese education from youth to adult, The author has a special felling about this kind of traditional education.
The teachers’ qualities of primary schools are required to be enhanced. The majority of teachers in primary school do not have bachelor degree. Their teaching principle is ‘no strict master, no good students’. So the image gave to people is teachers are serious, solumn, and perfect. Most students enters primary school at six, the deepest impression left on them is that the school is a prison. The young teacher was so serious that everyone kept still. One thing the author remembered clearly was that in the middle of class, a boy pissed because he dared not tell teacher. When the teacher found that, she punished the boy to stand before all the classmates and regarded it as a warning to the rest of us. Of course, the boy had become the target whom was made fun of. After experiencing the authority of the teacher, the whole class behaved obediently. While, the most horrible thing was that if you can not answer the question, you would also be punished. Ironically, according to butterfly effect, the more scared the more errors the students would make, so the punishment became inevitable for us. Maybe the teacher believed that ''a strict teacher produces outstanding students''. But, she did not know what shadows she left on our young minds. Although, the students were trained into docile lambs, they lost their inner thoughts, especially, the creative thinking is killed at young. The mind of young child is like a pure white paper, teachers should ponder what they will draw on it and how to picture. It is also a popular problem in China that teachers' quality of primary school is often ignored. Normally, people put much more emphasis on education of high school and regard college entrance examination as the turning of the fate. However, they hardly realize that without a solid foundation, how could they build a large, attractive house?
John Locke once said that education is essentially a training of character rather than simply rote instruction in knowledge – to prepare for life, rather than for the university. Pathetically for most students, they have rarely done this. From the start of the school, they have been learning for examination. Since the first day of their education, they have been told that only you study well, can they get a good job, a better life. As they are docile lambs, they indulge ourselves into learning like what teacher and parents hoped. Thereof, a new generation of ''bookworm'' appeared. In the author’s opinion, this is the process of the birth of ''bookworm''. The object of education is to give man the unity of truth. Formerly, when life was simple, all the different elements of man were in complete harmony. But when there came the separation of the intellect from the spiritual and the physical, the school education put entire emphasis on intellect and the physical side of man. Educators devote their sole attention to giving children information, not knowing that by this emphasis they are accentuating a break between the intellectual, physical, and the spiritual life.
Another problem makes the author worried is how to treat the so called ''poor student ''. In the teacher's eyes, they are troublemakers. Their seats were always kept in the back row. For many people, they are hopeless. Recently, a movie ''the girl we loved those years'' was hot broadcast online. In the movie, the leading actor was also a poor student, but, with the help of a beautiful, excellent girl, he also achieved good results. Although, the main theme of the movie was not about this, it substantiated that poor students were not hopeless. A famous educator once said that ''there are no bad students but poor teachers in the world''. On the other side, we could not judge a student by academic performance. Many students achieved great success in other aspects after graduation.
Now, the author is striving for her Master Degree. What she concerned is what job can she find after graduation. She does not know what is problem with our education. In the homepage, the signs of job growth do not look so good for liberal arts graduates. The pressure of job employment also make many students have to give up their favorite major.
Generally speaking, Chinese education has trained many intelligent, there are still many things to improve. The author can only discuss some aspects and make a few suggestions. However, it will only be solved when most of Chinese people realize and have an incentive to correct this problem. Wish that this day will come earlier!
