魚類學(xué)家、生態(tài)學(xué)家。江蘇吳江人。1938年畢業(yè)于蘇州東吳大學(xué)理學(xué)院生物系，獲理學(xué)學(xué)士學(xué)位。1947年獲加拿大蒙特利爾麥吉爾大學(xué)哲學(xué)博士學(xué)位。中國(guó)科學(xué)院水生生物研究所研究員。40年代開始魚類學(xué)研究工作，對(duì)鱔魚性別逆轉(zhuǎn)現(xiàn)象進(jìn)行了詳盡研究。1944年發(fā)表的《鱔魚的始原雌雄同體現(xiàn)象》一文引起國(guó)際動(dòng)物學(xué)界的關(guān)注。1949年后，著重開展魚類生態(tài)學(xué)、湖沼學(xué)的研究工作，調(diào)查、研究、總結(jié)了中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)養(yǎng)魚的豐富經(jīng)驗(yàn)。武昌東湖漁業(yè)穩(wěn)產(chǎn)、高產(chǎn)和水體生物生產(chǎn)力的研究，使東湖漁業(yè)生產(chǎn)獲得高速度發(fā)展，從理論與實(shí)踐上為發(fā)展中國(guó)淡水漁業(yè)及淡水生態(tài)學(xué)做出了貢獻(xiàn)。

1980年當(dāng)選為中國(guó)科學(xué)院院士（學(xué)部委員）。

Ichthyologist and ecologist. Born in Wujiang, Jiangsu Province. Graduated and received BS from the Department of Biology, College of Science, Soochow University in 1938 and Ph.D. from McGill University, Canada in 1947. Research professor, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Science.

Liu began to study ichthyology in the 1940s. He made an exhaustive study on sex reversal in Monopterus. His paper “Rudimentary Hermaphroditism in the Synbranchoid Eel” published in 1944 attracted close attention from international zoological circles. He has researched mainly on fish ecology and limnology since 1949. He investigated, studied and summarized the plentiful experience of Chinese traditional fish culture. His research on sustainable high fishery yield in Lake Donghu, and the biological productivity of water bodies brought rapid increase in fishery productin. He has made contributions to the development of Chinese fresh-water fishery and freshwater ecology both in theory and practice.

He was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.
