        By Savannah Guthrie

Reporter: This morning on “Todays Money,” the skyrocketing costs of raising a family. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates it can cost an average of $235,000 to raise a child born in 2011 up to age 17. Its no wonder a study from Babycenter.com found that four out of five families are stressed out about money. And Carmen Wong-Ulrich is Babycenter. coms financial contributor. Shes here to help us out this morning. Carmen, good morning.

        Carmen: Good morning.

Reporter: That $235,000, is that up 10% from the year before?

        Carmen: Its a lot. Right.

Reporter: So I imagine that numbers just gonna continue to grow, and nowadays a lot of families are dual income if theyre lucky, but a lot of single income families are really having to struggle as well.

Carmen: Well, its actually more 1)precarious…

        Reporter: Right.

Carmen: ...to be dual income and to base your whole budget on one…on those both of those incomes.

        Reporter: Right.

Carmen: ...because the odds are, especially now in this economy, that for the whole life that youre with your family somebodys incomes gonna either go away...

        Reporter: Mmm hmm.

Carmen: ...or get cut back or youre gonna have another child, so you actually wanna make sure that to form your budget on less than that 100% of your dual income. So that way you have some flexibility, and I know some families that have actually taken one income...

        Reporter: Right.

Carmen: ...and used that solely to save emergency fund, retirement and college. And that way you have a safety net should someone get laid off or income go down. And I think more moms need to pay attention to planning, long-term planning...

        Reporter: Right.

Carmen: ...saving and growing, not just the budget day-to-day.

        Reporter: Yeah.

Carmen: ...and if you really are in charge of the household budget, make sure that you set a time aside once a month to actually go down and break it down and show your spouse, lets say if youre arguing with them, this is where the money is going...

        Reporter: Mmm hmm.

Carmen: ...this is the goal we need to set, whether its paying down debts, saving for college, do we share those goals, and if we cut here, here and here, this is where the money can go instead, and thats a great thing, and really gotta communicate.

Reporter: And most people, I think, view this as youre investing in your childs future, but that raises the other concern. Should you be worried about your childrens future or worried about your own future first?

Carmen: Well, almost, virtually all the moms that we surveyed at Babycenter said that they believe that the money that they spend on their children, not just towards education but in general, is an investment in their children. But this is something that I hear from moms all the time, which scares me. They say, “Oh its OK. Ill tap home 2)equity to pay for college” or “Its OK, you know, Ill cut down how much Im putting away for retirement.”

        Reporter: Right.

Carmen: If you dont take care of yourself, you end up being a burden on your kids. And the best gift you can give them is to actually maintain and secure your retirement, your savings, and then you can take care of that.

Reporter: And you say some good suggestions you have—start using coupons...

        Carmen: Yes.

        Reporter: ...eating out less …

Carmen: ...3)hand-me-downs. All of these things are really great. And finding free activities and events. Now online in community message boards, theres so many different ways to find free things to do as a family. And actually half of the moms said they actually enjoy that.

        Reporter: Mmm hmm.

Carmen: They enjoy all this coupon-clipping and stuff. Its money that can be put to something else.

Reporter: Its the art of the deal, its getting out there. Carmen: Isnt it? I love a deal.

Reporter: Yeah, absolutely. Carmen Wang-Ulrich. Thanks so much.

        Carmen: Thanks.
