Carrie: Give me back my purse, Dorrit!
Mr. Bradshaw: God, what the hell is going on in here?!
Carrie: She bit me!
Dorrit: Shes going through my stuff!
Mr. Bradshaw: We do not have time for this. You both have to be in school in half an hour, all right? Carrie, go on and get dressed.
Carrie: (looks at Dorrit) I know you took it.
Mr. Bradshaw: Go. You cant be late on your first day. And, Dorrit...That is...way too much eye makeup. (leaves and enters in Carries room) Carrie...Youre the older one. You cant take the
bait[上圈套].
Carrie: I have teeth marks on my arm.
Mr. Bradshaw: I know that Dorrit can be difficult. But...your mom would want you two to get along[
Carrie: Yeah. Yeah, I know.
Mr. Bradshaw: All right? So whatever you two were fighting about, its not worth it.
Carrie: She stole moms purse.
Mr. Bradshaw: You dont know that.
Carrie: I cant go to school without the purse, dad.
Mr. Bradshaw: Youre going to school.
Carrie: I dont have anything to wear.
Mr. Bradshaw: Come on. Youve got a whole floor full of clothing.
Carrie: No. Mom used to take me shopping for an outfit. It was…was a thing we did, you know? Back-to-school clothes.
Mr. Bradshaw: Okay. Did you want me to take you?
Carrie: No. No. That was...um...supposed to be mom.
Mr. Bradshaw: I see.
Carrie: I just...I need the purse. I...I need a piece of her.
Mr. Bradshaw: I have an idea. (Takes Carrie to Mrs. Bradshaws closet, then picks up a pair of sunglasses and gives it to Carrie)
Carrie: Really?
Mr. Bradshaw: Yeah. Just...try not to let em get broken in your backpack.
Carrie: Ill be super careful, I promise.
I have always found Linda difficult.
Yvonne met a very difficult customer yesterday.
Mouse: Bradshaw.
Carrie: Mouse.
Mouse: I heart[把……放在心中] you, you know?
Carrie: I know. I need it.
Maggie: Boob[(俗)胸部] to boob, baby.
Carrie: Hi, Maggie. Hey Walt, nice sweater. Is that the one from...
Walt: The one Rob Lowe注1 was wearing in Interview注2.
Carrie: Nice.
Walt: How you holding up?
Carrie: Id be a lot better if I didnt feel like everyone
was staring at[凝視;盯住] me.
Maggie: Oh please. No one is even looking at you.
Walt: Believe it or not, I think Mags actually meant that as a compliment[稱贊,褒揚(yáng)].
Maggie: Mm hmm. There is way bigger news today.
Mouse: I have to agree. New kid.
Maggie: New guy. A junior[美國(guó)中學(xué)或大學(xué)的三年級(jí)生] like us.
Carrie: Does new kid have a name?
Maggie: Even his name is cool.
Mouse: Sebastian Kydd.
Maggie: Hes been kicked out[(口)開(kāi)除] of three boarding schools—Deerfield, Exeter, and I forget where else. His parents finally had to give up and bring him home. Theyre totally rich. He drives a Porsche.
Walt: Mags, you do realize Im standing right here and Im your boyfriend?
(Sebastian walks towards Carrie)
Sebastian: Hey, Bradshaw.
Carrie: Hey.
Sebastian: Heard about your mom.
Real bummer[
Carrie: Thanks.
(school bell rings)
Sebastian: Ill see you around. I cant get kicked out of another school this early in the year.
Maggie: (to Carrie) So you have some explaining to do.
(all laugh)
“How (are) you holding up?” 癶old up”表示堅(jiān)持、經(jīng)受考驗(yàn)。
“Believe it or not…”
Believe it or not, Im going to France on Wednesday!
Mr. Bradshaw: Im taking you home.
Carrie: Dad, Im fine.
Mr. Bradshaw: You fainted[
Carrie: I just got scared[嚇壞的] when I saw you. You know, the last time you were here...
Mr. Bradshaw: Yeah. Yeah, Im sorry. I shouldve...I shouldve told you I was coming in to meet with your guidance counselor.
Carrie: Yeah, you should have, and I dont need some shrink[(美俚)神經(jīng)科醫(yī)師] talking about how screwed up I am.
Mr. Bradshaw: Thats not what we were talking about.
Carrie: Then what?
Mr. Bradshaw: Youve been through a lot, and we thought maybe it might be a good idea if you had a change of pace, a change of scenery.
Carrie: Youre shipping me off to a loony bin[(俚)瘋?cè)嗽篯.
Mr. Bradshaw: Some would call it that...or call me crazy for agreeing to this, but what about an internship? One day a week, for school credit, of course.
Carrie: Like, work in an office? Where?
Mr. Bradshaw: My friends law firm in Manhattan.
Carrie: Manhattan? No way! Aah! No way! What would I be doing? Do…do I need to type? Because Im not very good at that. I just…I cant believe it. I…I cant believe it.
Mr. Bradshaw: Okay, I guess…I guess you really are feeling okay. Carrie: Yeah.
Mr. Bradshaw: Now, look, I know this all sounds really cool, right? But its also a lot of responsibility. New York is an intense place, and youre gonna have to prove to me that you can handle[處理] it.
Carrie: I will. I promise. Ill be a total professional. Will I need a briefcase?
在口語(yǔ)中,“No way.” He in no way resembles his father.
Carrie: Thank you. This is a dream come true.
Larissa: And to think, you almost missed all this because of some boring work thing.
Carrie: Oh, no. Work! I have to go. I have to get back. Here, uh, take this zebra.
Larissa: Wait. Youre such a mystery, always dashing off. So exciting. How will I get your purse back?
Carrie: Uh, Ill call you.
Larissa: Okay.
Carrie: Bye.
Larissa: Oh, Carrie, wait! I want you to have this. Its Dior. Its one-of-a-kind.
Carrie: I cant take that.
Larissa: Oh, of course you can. You deserve[應(yīng)受] it. Youre a one-of-a-kind. You dont believe it, but one day you will.
Carrie: How will I ever believe that?
Larissa: You know the fairy tale Pinocchio?
Carrie: Yeah.
Larissa: Well, that little puppet[木偶] was a pretend boy who became real because he believed it.
Carrie: Actually, Pinocchio could only become real if he told the truth, and he couldnt.
Larissa: Okay, well...then not that story. The point is, sometimes you have to fake[偽裝] it to make it. After a while, whats fake becomes truth.(Carrie finally gets back to office and her boss is already waiting there)
Boss: Youre an hour and a half late.
Carrie: I…
Boss: Can explain? Maybe I should explain. Im the person who signs that little sheet that gets you credit for this internship.
Carrie: But…
Boss: But you think youre young and cute, and because your dad is friends with Harlan Silver—one of the partners here—youre not accountable[有責(zé)任的].
Carrie: No. I know I am. These are the binders that are already done. Well, 50 of them. I still have the last ten to do this afternoon. When the printer realized their mistake, they offered to collate[校訂] them free of charge[免費(fèi)]. Uh, and heres the Constantines case. Oh, cases. There were two different Constantines, so I brought them both just to be safe. And…um...here.
Boss: What is that?
Carrie: Its a scarf. I know you have something special tonight, so I thought you might like this.
Boss: I couldnt take that.
Carrie: I bought it for you.
Boss: How much do I owe you?
Carrie: I got it in the bargain bin[廉價(jià)商品處理區(qū)]. You can buy me a bagel or something one morning. Oh, and I, uh, left your Chinese food on your desk. And I got you extra pancakes.
Boss: Well, thank you. Now get back to work. Those binders arent gonna bind themselves. And if you screw up again or disobey me, this internships over.
Carrie: Dorrit, what is this?
Dorrit: Thats Morrissey, like the lead singer in The
Smiths注3.
Carrie: Where did it come from?
Dorrit: Im guessing a female hamster[倉(cāng)鼠].
Carrie: Does dad know about this?
Dorrit: No, but Im sure youll tell him.
Carrie: You cant just get a hamster without asking dad.
Dorrit: I did ask. He said, “Not now,” which means never.
Carrie: And he doesnt think we know that.
Dorrit: But mom said shed get me one. She just...didnt get around to[抽出時(shí)間做某事] it.
Carrie: Okay. I get it. But...now you have to take care of it. You cant just stick it in a shoebox. It should have food and water, a wheel. I mean, at the very least, a cage.
Dorrit: I wanted to get a cage, but I thought if I did, Id get caught.
Carrie: Wait. No, please tell me you did not
shoplift[從商店中偷商品] a hamster.
Dorrit: Points for creativity?
Carrie: Its not funny, Dorrit. Do you understand that this is a living creature whose entire existence now depends on you?
Dorrit: Yes.
Carrie: No, you dont, because youre
utterly[完全地] devoid[缺乏] of any sense of responsibility. I mean, you didnt even pay for this animal.
Dorrit: He was $2. Thats a lot.
Carrie: Tell you what. If you take him back to the store right now. I wont say anything to dad.
Dorrit: Im not taking him back.
Carrie: I cant deal with this now. I have to go somewhere.
Dorrit: Where?
Carrie: None of your business.
Dorrit: Maybe its dads business...if youre meeting that guy. So... Looks like I get to keep Morrissey after all.
