The old man walked with a cane(拐杖)slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket, patched(打補(bǔ)丁的)trousers, and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that shone like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips held in a steady smile.

He walked toward a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying, “Here, sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair.”

Without a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table. Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and got him comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him, and leaned(靠置)his cane against the table where he could reach it.

In a soft, clear voice he said, “Thank you, Miss.”

“You are welcome, sir,” she replied. “My name is Mary. Ill be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me!”

After he had finished a hearty meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon tea, Mary brought him the change, helping him up from his chair and out from the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, “Come back and see us, sir!”

He nodded a thank you and said softly with a smile, “You are very kind!”

When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under his plate she found a business card and a note written on the napkin, under which was a 100 bill.

The note on the napkin read, “Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself, too. It shows the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. Your kind gestures will shine through those who meet you.”

LONDON—England will join the growing list of places that dont allow smoking in public buildings, taxis and other places that includes even Buckingham Palace with a strong law.

Pubs, clubs and restaurants will all be smoke-free places. Taxi drivers have been warned that they could be fined(罰款)50 pounds, or about $100, if they are caught lighting up inside work taxis.

Experts say the bans have become unchangeable because of increasing health costs and public worry over second-hand smoke. Some of the strictest smoking bans are in some of the United States states, such as New York and Florida, which include bars and restaurants as smoke-free places.

Spain, Italy, Iran, Norway, Sweden, Singapore, South Africa, Uruguay and New Zealand have made laws to limit smoking. France banned smoking in many public places in February and cafes and restaurants will become non-smoking places next year. Finland will introduce a ban, too.

Bans are spreading among countries, and the World Health Organization supports them, but it said that by 2030 there will be “at least another two billion smokers in the world” and an expected decrease in male smokers “will be offset(抵消)by an increase in female smoking rates, especially in developing countries”.

In advance of the English ban, anti-smoking ads have coated bus stops and the government prepares to pay some money to help people give up smoking. The rest of Britain—Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland—already have smoking bans ready.

        55. It can be inferred that taxi drivers ___ .

        57. The passage suggests that ___ .

        C. It is negative. D. It is uncertain.

        C

There are many ways of defining(界定)success. In other words, each of us has our own opinion on success that each of us can set our own goals and determine whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us has differences in born abilities and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must judge success broadly.

For some people, simply being able to live their lives with the least degree of misery(悲慘)and suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd(牧羊人)who looks after his sheep. He enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature. And he is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success. Because not all goals can be achieved, one should not set unpractical goals for achieving success. But if one believes his ability, it would be unfortunate to set ones goals at too low a level of achievement.

A wise advisor once said to a young man who was experiencing bottleneck in his life, “You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful just by taking a walk in a park or taking a train downtown.” The advisor added, “You have not really failed and ruined your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.”

        59. Why does the author say “There are many ways of defining success”?

        A. Ability decides success. B. People have different goals and opinions.

        C. Not all goals can be achieved successfully. D. Abilities are often defined in different ways.

        60. What does the story of the shepherd and the rich suggest?

        A. The shepherd is easily satisfied. B. Goals should be practical for success.

        C. People tend to set their goals too high. D. The rich often consider themselves unsuccessful.

        61. What does it mean to be unsuccessful in something according to the advisor?

        A. You failed to try what you can. B. You missed your chances to succeed.

        C. You tried but failed to do what you like. D. You did your best to do something very easy to do.

        62. The text mainly talks about ___ .

        A. how we can set our goals B. what success really means

        C. why people fail to succeed D. whether we can be successful

        D

Many people think that light pollution is just a problem for spacemen. This is simply not true. People do not even realize it. However, that doesnt reduce its effect a bit.

Light pollution wastes unbelievable amount of money nationwide. While the cost to the typical homeowner might be between 150 and 250 per year, the cost to the nation is almost 10 billion. This is a large amount of money to waste. Diseases could be studied, the hungry could be fed, and our nations children could be better educated.

Light pollution pollutes our environment. By wasting electricity, we force our companies to use more energy and therefore send out more harmful materials into the environment. Many breathing problems are caused by or made worse by these materials.

Light pollution is a danger to human health. Recent studies show that light at night disturbs our body immune system(免疫系統(tǒng)). A study printed by The Journal of Neuroscience discusses how light shining into your bedroom can disrupt(擾亂)the clock in your body. There are even links between light pollution and certain forms of cancer, including breast cancer.

Light pollution is a threat to wildlife. Many types of wildlife are unable to deal with such disruption of their night time environments. For example, millions of birds die each year because of light pollution. They rely on the stars to navigate. When they fly over light polluted areas, they lose their sense of direction. Many fly until tired out and die.

So if you think light pollution only hurts spacemen, you are dead wrong. Sure, light pollution not only robs us of the sky filled with beautiful stars, but it also hurts every man, woman, child and living thing on the earth.

        63. Light pollution ___ .

        A. is just a problem for spacemen B. causes breathing problems directly

        C. makes millions of birds survive each year D. actually causes the world many problems

        64. The underlined word “navigate” in Paragraph 5 probably means “___”.

        A. know the time B. get the food

        C. fly over mountains D. find the direction

        65. The purpose of the writer is to ___ .

        A. prove that light pollution really exists B. warn people of the danger of light pollution

        C. correct the misunderstanding of light pollution D. explain the reason why there is light pollution

All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain at all time clean and tidy.

You could turn your back for a moment in my mothers house, leave a half-written letter on the dining room table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had “put it back where it belonged” as she explained.

My wife, on one of her first visits to my mothers house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused, she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that everyone in my family held onto their drinks, so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now she knows better.

These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all tending to forgetfulness. And it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find that every sign of his work in progress had disappeared suddenly. “Do you remember what I was doing” was a question frequently asked , but rarely answered.

Now my sister has developed a second-hand love of clean windows, and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to lift his feet. I try not to think about it too much, but I have at this later time started to dust the furniture once a week. `
