        A

The class teacher thought that hobbies were very important for every child. She encouraged all her pupils to have one, and sometimes arranged for their parents to come and see the work they had done as a result.

One Friday morning the teacher told the class that those of them who had a hobby could have a holiday that afternoon to get the things they had made as parts of their hobbies ready for their parents to see the following afternoon.

So on Friday afternoon, while those of the pupils who had nothing to show were doing their usual lessons, the lucky ones who had made something were allowed to go home, on condition that they returned before five o’clock to bring what they were going to show, and to arrange them.

When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. He was the laziest boy in the class, and the teacher found it difficult to believe that he had a hobby. However, at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection of butterflies in glass cases. After his teacher had admired them and helped him to arrange them on a table in the classroom, she was surprised to see Tommy pick them up again and begin to leave.

“What are you doing, Tommy?” she asked. “Those things must remain here until tomorrow afternoon. That’s when the parents are coming to see them.”

“I know they are coming then,” answered Tommy, “and I will bring them back tomorrow. My elder brother doesn’t want them to be out of our house at night in case they are stolen.”

“But what has it got to do with your elder brother?” asked the teacher. “Aren’t the butterflies yours?”

“No,” answered Tommy. “They belong to him.”

“But Tommy, you are supposed to show your own hobby here, not somebody else’s!” said the teacher.

“I know that,” answered Tommy. “My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies.”

Sports activities in the following countries:

Australia. Sports in Australia are perhaps more popular than in any other nation in the world. Each year the attendance at sporting events is many times the total adult population. Australia is best known internationally for its recent successes in all the national lawn tennis tournaments (錦標(biāo)賽). Australia’s swimmers hold many of the world and Olympic records; and the famous crawl stroke (自由泳) originated there. Other popular sports include horse racing, cycling, golf, football and baseball.

France. Cycling might be called the national sport in France. Bicycle race along the national highways is the most popular sport in the country, and the race known as the “Tour de France” is the most famous bicycle race in the entire world. In tennis, French players were the most famous in world competition during the 1920’s, and the French title is still one of the four most famous titles in the game, along with those of Australia, Great Britain, and the United States. Automobile racing is also very popular in France.

Germany. Germany won the third place in the unofficial scoring in the 1960 Olympic Games. Once having the finest racing cars and drivers in the world, this country is beginning to get back to its earlier period place in that sport. Soccer is one of the leading team sports, and cycling events are also popular. Germans hold many records in swimming and diving, and they are famous for their prize-winning horsemanship.

Great Britain. As the originator of many sports, Great Britain has more sports activities than any other European country. The list includes cricket (the national sports), football (both soccer and Rugby games), lawn bowls, tennis (lawn), field hockey, boxing, horse racing and rowing. Automobile racing on the amateur (業(yè)余的) and professional level is probably more popular in England than in any other country. Several world records are held by British track and field athletes. Roger Bannister was the first distance runner to run a mile under four minutes.

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of the disease but it can often be cured if treated early enough. Ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外線) from the sun and tanning machines remain the main risky factor but the danger is also influenced by a person’s skin type.

“A study of 100,000 Scandinavian women showed that high UV ray exposure (暴露) in their youth was linked to problems later,” says biophysicist Ruediger Greinert of the Dermatological Center in Germany.

Doctors suggest regular skin check-ups. “A person should be checked all over every two months to see if there have been any changes. If anything itches (發(fā)癢) or bleeds for no reason, you should go to a doctor,” advises Eckhard Breitbart of the Hamburg-based ADP Working Group on Dermatological Prevention.

“When you check your birthmarks, you should use the so-called A-B-C-D rule,” says Breitbart.

The A stands for not being balanced. An at-risk birthmark will not have a regular shape, like the circles and ovals found in so many other skin blemishes (斑點(diǎn)).

The B—for borders—is also important. “If the border isn’t regular or bleeds outside the original shape, then there is a reason for concern,” says Breitbart.

The C is for color. A harmless birthmark will tend to be a uniform light brown. Multi-colored birthmarks are a sign of possible danger.

Finally, there is the D for diameter (直徑). Breitbart advises keeping a close eye on any birthmark with a diameter of 2 mm or more.

If there is a reason to think that a birthmark has changed, it is quite necessary to have a doctor examine it. An operation at this stage will usually leave nothing more than a small scar.

        49. How can a person prevent skin cancer?

        A. Try to avoid being exposed too much to the sun.B. Remove all the birthmarks.

        C. Have irregular check-ups of your skin.D. Stay away from machines.

        50. Which of the following may be the sign of skin cancer?

        A. The change of birthmarks.B. Bleeding badly.

        C. Itching badly.D. The increasing of birthmarks.

        51. From the passage we can infer that ____ .

        A. skin cancer can be easily cured

        B. those working outdoors are more likely to get skin cancer

        C. birthmarks are the cause of skin cancer

        D. those having more birthmarks are more likely to get skin cancer

        52. Which of the following can serve as the best title of this passage?

        A. Beating Skin Cancer as Easy as A-B-C-D.B. Birthmarks—the Cause of Skin Cancer.

        C. An Easy Way to Cure Skin Cancer.D. A-B-C-D—the Sign of Skin Cancer.

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health, wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, or the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in a bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in the social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. They should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them.

        57. The underlined phrase “sour the pleasure of society” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “____”.

        A. have a good taste with social lifeB. make others unhappy

        C. tend to scold others openlyD. enjoy the pleasure of life

        58. We can mainly conclude from the passage that ____ .

        A. we should pity all such unhappy peopleB. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life

        C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappinessD. unhappy people cannot understand happy persons

        59. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should ____ .

        A. prevent any communication with themB. show no respect and politeness to them

        C. persuade them to recognize the bad effectsD. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

        60. In this passage, the writer mainly ____ .

        A. describes two types of peopleB. laughs at the unhappy people

        C. suggests ways to help the unhappy peopleD. tells people how to be happy in life
