“Cancer will overtake heart disease as the world’s top killer by 2012, part of a trend (趨勢) that there should be more than double global cancer cases and deaths by 2030,” international health experts reported yesterday.
Rising tobacco use in developing countries is believed to be a huge reason for the shift, particularly in China and India, where 40 percent of the world’s smokers now live.
“Cancer cases around the world have steadily been rising and are expected to hit 12 million this year. Global cancer deaths are expected to reach 7 million,” according to the new report by the World Health Organization (WHO).
An annual rise of 1 percent in cases and deaths is expected with even larger increases in China, Russia and India. That means new cancer cases will likely mushroom to 27 million annually by 2030, with deaths hitting 17 million.
The report was released (公布) yesterday by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer at a news conference with officials from the American Cancer Society, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Cancer Institute of Mexico.
“The ‘unprecedented’ gathering of organizations is an attempt to draw attention to the global threat of cancer, which isn’t recognized as a major, growing health problem in some developing countries,” said John Seffrin, the Cancer Society’s chief executive officer.
The organizations are calling for action. “If we take action, we can keep the numbers from going where they would otherwise go.” said Seffrin. Other groups are also voicing support for more action.
“Cancer is one of the greatest untold health problems in the developing world,” said Dr Douglas Blayney, president-elect of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
“Few know the cancer already kills more people in poor countries than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis combined. And if current smoking trends continue, the problem will get worse,” he said in a statement.

Whether you go through a dealer (經(jīng)銷商) or deal directly with a private owner, the simplest way to pay less for a car is to buy a used car. But the lower price often carries some risk with it. When it comes to buying used cars, the message is definitely buyer-bewared. Find out all you can about the car history and its condition before you buy it.
Buying from a dealer
Buying the nearly new is often the easiest way to get your money’s worth. Many brand new models lose up to half their value in the first two years. So buying a two-year-old car gets you a half-price bargain that is still in good shape and unlikely to pay high repair bills.
Buying from a dealer is usually more expensive than buying privately, but it may provide you with more help should there be problems down the road.
Cheaper from a private seller
Privately sold cars are usually cheaper than those bought from dealers. When you are viewing the car at the seller’s home, pick a time when there is daylight and the weather is good. You want to be able to check the vehicle over thoroughly and get a feel for how well it has been maintained.
Vehicle history
Look up the history of the vehicle while you are considering on the Internet. Websites like CarProof.ca (or if you prefer to call 1-519-675-1415) and RoadCompanion.ca can help you uncover things that a dealer may not be telling you.
If you have the vehicle registration number (VIN or serial number) and about $25, you can find out, for example, if there are any liens registered by creditors (債權(quán)人), if the car has been stolen, and if it has an odometer (里程計) history. By checking the vehicle’s history before you buy, you will be protecting yourself from hidden problems.
45. What does the underlined word “buyer-bewared” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. buyer-careful. B. buyer-honest.
C. buyer-worth. D. buyer-careless.
46. What’s the risk if you buy a used car directly from the owner?
A. A higher price.B. Less help.
C. High repair bills.D. False registration.
47. How can you find out if the car is lawfully registered?
A. By checking its owner’s ID card.B. By checking its history on the Internet.
C. By asking the dealer.D. By checking the car and its registration carefully.
48. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Buying a used car privately may save you some money and risk.
B. You can buy a brand new car at half price from a private seller.
C. Buying a used car from a dealer will save you some money and trouble.
D. If you want to find information about the car at RoadCompanion.ca, you have to pay some money.

“The US government should roll out a team of mental health professionals to comfort Americans over the economic losses and encourage them to spend and invest,” a New York psychiatrist (精神病學(xué)家) said.
Dr Richard Friedman of the Cornell Weill Medical Center in New York said he was treating 25 percent more people because of the depression, with patients suffering from insomnia (失眠) due to anxiety and some even being diagnosed with clinical depression. “It creates a culture of anxiety and fear. So you are not talking about a handful of people, you are talking about a situation in which the environment is fearful,” Friedman told reporters in an interview. “It’s contagious (傳染的). Even people whose jobs are secure feel frightened that they, too, could lose their jobs.”
The US economy, in depression since December 2007, is declining under a heavy burden of rising unemployment. Data released on Thursday showed jobless numbers rose to a record high in early February of 4.99 million, a rate of 3.7 percent. Washington has put forward a lot of measures, including a $787 billion encouraging package, to revive the bleeding economy.
Friedman said people’s anxiety need to be addressed immediately on a national scale. His answer is: Replace assurances and explanations from economists and politicians with advice from mental health professionals. “Fear of the economic climate should be dealt with in the same way as an unreasonable fear,” he said.
“Say you are afraid of the dark, you walk in a dark room, turn on the lights and see that there is nothing terrible there,” he said. “You’re afraid of heights, you climb higher and higher, you get exposed and you see nothing awful that is going to happen to you. You’re afraid that the market is going to fall down, you go out and you spend money.”
49. What do the underlined words “roll out” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

Letters to Santa Claus Flood Alaskan Town
It’s a name that needs no address. Everyone knows Santa Claus (圣誕老人) lives at the North Pole. So letters sent to Santa Claus find their way to the small town of North Pole deep in Alaska’s inside part, including those simply addressed to Santa.
Those that do have return addresses usually get a reply and a North Pole postmark in a holiday that has delighted children all over the world for ten years.
Letters increase around Thanksgiving. They start pouring in by the thousands each day as Christmas comes. Even stampless letters get through, a rare exception for the US Postal Service.
“This is special because it has Santa’s name on it,” said Debra Cornelius, a supervisor at the main post office in nearby Fairbanks.
Gabby Gaborik is among several dozen volunteers who believe in the Santa Claus, opening boxes full of letters, as many as 12,000 a day. With 6,000 now arriving daily, volunteers are busy sending off pre-printed replies to children who have sent return addresses.
“We try to keep the big guy mysterious (神秘的), so we sign off as Santa’s helpers,” said Gaborik.
There are the children who want the latest toys and the children who ask for miracles, orphans wanting their mothers back for Christmas or fathers back from Iraq, even though they died there. Some enclose a dollar bill to cover postage.
Gaborik still surprised at a letter that arrived three years ago with a Michigan postmark and no postage stamp. It was addressed to Santa Claus and had no return address. Inside there was a thousand-dollar money order and an note that said, “If you are who you say you are, you’ll put this to good use.”

Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more important in some regions than in others (Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo are the biggest Sweetest Day cities). It is a holiday that is gaining in popularity every year throughout the country.
Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged, and orphaned (孤兒) , but also friends, relatives and companions whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city’s orphans and patients too often felt forgotten, thought out the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by handing out small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he handed out these small remembrances (紀念品) on a Saturday in October. During the following years, other Clevelanders began to join in the celebration ceremony, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. In time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor was broadened to everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small remembrance. And soon the idea spread to other cities all over the country.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious feelings or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.
Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift-giving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care, in a real way.
