第一節(jié)(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

I thought it was rather strange when my friend from the nursing home asked me to push her wheelchair through the puddles (泥水坑). To meet my friend’s request, although I didn’t really get it, we went off on our watery wheelchair walk. We made our way through each puddle together, a bit wet and smiling. In fact, after a few minutes, even I started looking for larger and more puddles to roll through.
After that we discovered something new that waited for us. As we headed down the street, there was a small pile of leaves. My friend asked me to roll her through them, and we did like rushing into piles of autumn leaves, which flew up into the air, softly moved around us and then fell gently back to the earth.
From wheelchair speeding through puddles and leaves, to bursting into laughter, and screaming for no particular reason, we were like two playmates realizing what it truly meant to enjoy life, taking no notice of the strange looks or unpleasant words from those around us. It was at that moment that I thought more deeply about my friend’s trouble. And now I see that the fun of the child had been locked inside her for all these years. So, all that she wanted to be with me was a child who was free, free to laugh, play and get wet.
Thanks to my friend, I am now on a journey to find all that make children come out and play.

All sorts of things become rubbish but two of the most common and most dangerous are cigarette ends and plastic bags. Rubbish is a big problem for our environment but it is a problem that individuals can easily do something about. Not littering (亂扔) at all or cleaning up rubbish, such as cigarette ends and plastic bags, greatly improves the quality of our environment.
Although cigarette ends are small, they are bad for the environment. Over 1,600 billion cigarettes are smoked each year in China and large quantities of the cigarette ends are thrown away. Worldwide, about 4.5 trillion (萬億) cigarette ends are littered every year. Apart from the fact that cigarette ends destroy the beauty of the environment, they contain some very toxic chemicals. These find their way into the water supply where they reduce the quality of the water and cause danger to plants and animals that live there. So, if people have to smoke, they shouldn’t throw away the cigarette ends but put them in the rubbish bin instead.
Plastic bags are another common form of rubbish that is a danger to the environment. There are several reasons for this. They are made from oil and gas, which are non-renewable resources. If they are not recycled, these resources are lost to us. In China, 2 billion plastic bags are used every day, and a large number of these become rubbish. This is a huge problem because they last from 20 to 1,000 years in the environment. They float easily in the air and water and travel long distances. They find their way to rivers, parks, beaches and oceans. Plastic bags kill up to one million seabirds, 100,000 sea mammals (哺乳動物) and countless fish each year worldwide. It is up to people not to let plastic bags become rubbish. It would be better if they used fewer and recycled them.
Cleaning up your cigarette ends and plastic bags would improve the environment. And we would know that we were doing something to look after our earth. However, I believe the best solution would be not to smoke or use plastic bags at all.

Aboriginal (土著的) is a term used to describe the people and animals that lived in a place from the earliest known times or before Europeans arrived. Examples are the Maoris in New Zealand, the Aborigines in Australia and the Indians in America. They all share the fact that they were pushed off their land by European settlers.
Maoris
The Maoris were the first people to go to New Zealand, about 1,000 years ago. They came from the islands of Polynesia in the Pacific. They brought dogs, rats and plants with them and settled mainly on the Northern Island. In 1769, Captain James Cook from Britain took possession of the island and from that time British people started to settle. The Maoris signed an agreement on land rights with these settlers, but in later years there were arguments and battles between them.
Aborigines
The native people of Australia came from somewhere in Asia more than 50,000 years ago. They lived by hunting and gathering. Their contact with British settlers began in 1788. By the 1940s almost all of them were mixed into Australian society as low-paid workers. Their rights were limited. In 1976 and 1993 the Australian Government passed laws that returned some land to the Aborigines and recognized their property rights.
American Indians
Long before the Europeans came to America in the 16th and 17th century, the American Indians, or Native Americans, lived there. It is believed that they came from Asia. Christopher Columbus mistook the land for India and so called the people there Indians. The white settlers and American Indians lived in peace at the beginning, but conflicts finally arose and led to the Indian Wars (1866—1890). After the wars, the Indians were driven to the west of the country. Not until 1924 did they gain the right to vote.
43. The similarity among Maoris, Aborigines and American Indians is that ____ .

The economic crisis is claiming another victim: world trade. Last month the World Bank predicted a 2 percent decrease this year —the largest drop since 1940’s.
Economies that depend on exports for growth have been hit hard. Japanese exports decreased almost 27 percent in November from a year earlier. Japan has the world’s second largest economy. A new report this week from China showed that its economy became the world’s third largest in 2007, passing Germany. China could also pass Germany as the world’s biggest exporter. But Chinese exports fell almost 3 percent in December from a year earlier—the sharpest drop in at least ten years. A story in a Chinese news magazine warned that factory closings could lead to unrest (動蕩) as the economy slows.
The latest reports show that German exports in November were down almost 12 percent from the year before. American exports decreased almost 2 percent in November from a year earlier. They were down 6 percent from October—but imports were down 12 percent. That reduced the monthly trade deficit (赤字) to the lowest level in five years.
Credit has improved in some cases since the economic crisis worsened in September. But falling demand, including reduced demand for oil, has cut trade around the world. The International Monetary Fund recently called for government spending, tax cuts and international cooperation to support growth. The Bank of England last week reduced its main interest rate (利率) to 1 and 1.5 percent—its lowest ever. The bank was established in 1694. Britain’s economy may have decreased by 1 percent just in the final three months of last year. The first assessments (評定) are expected at the end of January.
This week, Germany’s government agreed to an economic aid package worth about 67 billion dollars. The two-year plan calls for spending on public works and a tax cut for low-income Germans. Critics considered an earlier measure too small to fight the recession in Europe’s largest economy.
47. What’s the passage mainly about ?
A. The economic crisis hits world trade.
B. The economic crisis creates chances for developed countries.
C. The world’s main economies fail in the economic crisis.
D. World trade contributes much to the global economy.
