第二節(jié) 完形填空(共20小題;每小題1.5分,滿分30分)
When I was a child, I had an old neighbor named Dr Gibbs. He didn’t look like any other doctor I’ve ever known. He never 11 at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as a kind and 12 person.
When Dr Gibbs didn’t work, he planted trees. His house covered an area of ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a 13 .
He had some interesting 14 about planting. He belonged to the “No pains, no gains” 15 of plant growing. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked 16 , he said, “Watering plants will destroy them, and if you water them, each successive (后續(xù)的) tree 17 will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things 18 for them and remove the weak ones.” So he never watered his trees. He would 19 a pine (松樹), and instead of 20 it every morning, he beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I 21 him why he did so, and he said it was to get the tree’s 22 .
I planted a couple of trees a few 23 ago. I carried water to them for a solid summer, watered them and prayed over them. Two years of good care has 24 in trees that expect to be 25 on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble their branches.
Dr Gibbs passed away a 26 of years after I left home. Now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees.
They’re 27 now, big and healthy.
Funny things about Dr Gibbs’ tree. Hardship and difficulty seemed to do good to them 28 comfort and ease never could.
Life is rough, whether we want 29 to be or not. Too many times we pray for comfort, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for 30 that reach deep into the earth, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be swept away.

One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had ten cents left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his courage when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and asked, “How much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied, “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but also increased his faith in the human race. He was about to give up and stop before this point.
Years later the young woman became seriously ill and was sent to a hospital in a big city. Dr Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in for the examination. Back in the examination room he was determined to do his best to save her life.
After a long struggle, the woman was saved. But when the bill was sent to her room, she was afraid to open it because she knew what it would cost to cure a disease like hers. Finally she looked, and noticed a note on the side of the bill, which read:

About this trip:
John Cabot had set sail looking for a new trade way to Asia, when he landed in Cape Bonavista. Clearly he felt this waste poor area could provide this, so he required it for its potential and so began the rise of the British Empire.
Newfoundland is the most easterly point in North America and was Britain’s first overseas colony (殖民地). In 1949 it became part of Canada. It’s about the size of England and Craig’s journey by camper lorry or RV (Recreational Vehicle休閑車), took in just a small part of the island called the Bonavista Peninsula.
First stop was the tiny fishing port of Keels to store up for the journey ahead. There’s a long standing love relationship between Newfoundlanders and cod (鱈魚). The seas off the Newfoundland coast were once the richest cod fishing grounds in the world, attracting fishermen from all over Europe. Many people settled, building these coastal villages known locally as outports.
An hour’s drive down the coast is the town of Bonavista, where Craig met up with an old fisherman, Wilson Hayward. He told Craig how the area used to lie, and described the peculiarities (特色) of the native language in the area. There’s a different language in every bay (海灣).

The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched (草蓋的) roof cottages around a church; a drive through a narrow village street lined with thatched cottages painted pink or white; the sight over the rolling hills of a pretty collection of thatched farm buildings—these are still common sights in parts of England. Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an extremely important part of the attraction of the English countryside.
Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts (工藝) practiced in the British Isles. Although thatch has always been used for cottages and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and churches, too.
Thatching is a craft which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is practiced today has changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are worked in England and Wales today, keeping and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses. Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but also they know it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.
In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do it in different ways. People in developing countries are often unwilling to go back to traditional materials and would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import (進口) the necessary materials. Their temporary (暫時的) mud houses with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six months. Thatch which has been done in the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years, and is an effective defense against the heat.

A. narrow streets of small towns in the Middle Ages
B. rolling hills with farm buildings in England
C. special and unusual churches and castles in the British Isles
D. a special and unusual kind of building in Great Britain
48. Thatched houses are still preferred because of ____ .
A. their building crafts and comfortB. their great strength
C. their easy care and repairD. their cheap materials
49. People in developing countries also live under thatch because ____ .
A. thatched cottages are tourist attractions
B. thatched roof houses are the cheapest
C. thatch is an effective defense against the heat
D. they like thatched cottages better than other buildings
50. It can be inferred from the passage that ____ .
A. only the less fortunate British love thatched cottages
B. thatching was first started by the English people
C. the English are the best thatchers in the world
D. most thatched houses in England are on hillsides

第三部分 寫作(共三節(jié),滿分60分)
第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)
閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。
[1] For years children in the industrial areas of Europe and America seldom left their smoky cities to see the beauties of the countryside. Not that the woods and fields were always far away, but they were too far from the city to permit people to make a round trip between morning and nightfall. What’s more, factory workers did not have enough money to send their children on country holidays away from home.
[2] In 1907 a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small amount of money. The idea was a success. A few years later the schoolhouse was far too small to hold so many young people who wanted to stay there. So, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Youth Hostel (旅舍).
[3] Today young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other. Some spend a week or more in the same hostel, seeing the surrounding sights and meeting the people of the area. Other youths go on foot or by bicycle from place to place, spending a night or two in one hostel, then going to the next.
[4] Sometimes an informal program will be organized after the meal, with dances, songs, or short talks followed by a question period. One can about other places, just by meeting people who come from these places. For this reason, a few weeks spent “hostelling” can be just as useful a part of one’s education as classes in school.
56. Why did these children seldom leave their cities to see the beauties of the countryside? (No more than 30 words)
57. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us? (No more than 10 words)
