第二部分 閱讀理解(共兩節(jié),滿分50分)
第一節(jié)(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
A
My husband and children think they are very lucky that they are living and that it’s Christmas again. They can’t see that we live on a dirty street in a dirty house among people who aren’t very good. But Gary and children can’t see this. What a pity it is that our neighbors have to make happiness out of all this dirt. I decided that my children must get out of this. The money that we’ve saved isn’t nearly enough.
The Carters have money but they are so proud. They look down upon the poor. The Cater girl just stood out there in the street eating from a bag of candy while a ring of hungry children watched her yesterday. I saw those children looking at her and crying in their hearts; and when she couldn’t eat any more she threw the rest down the sewer (下水道). Why, is it only because they have money? There is more to happiness than money in the world, isn’t there?
Miss Jackson who teaches at the Settlement House isn’t rich, but she knows things. She understands people. Her eyes look straight into yours when she talks with you. She can read your mind. I’d like to see the children be like Miss Jackson when they grow up.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Body
Feeling tired lately? Has the doctor said he cannot find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong.
Then consider this. You might be in a state of subhealth (亞健康).
Subhealth, also called the third state or grey state, is explained as a border line state between health and disease. According to a study by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam time.
Symptoms include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, sleeplessness, anxiety, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternately work with rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements—vitamins and trace elements (微量元素)—that are important to the body.
Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract (消化道). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subhealth.

While I was waiting outside my wife’s office building for her to get out of work, I saw a beggar coming my way.
“I hope he won’t ask me for any money,” I thought.
He came and sat in front of the bus stop. After a few minutes he spoke. “That’s a pretty car,” he said, pointing to my car. He was ragged, but he had an air of dignity about himself.
I gave him a smile and continued cleaning my car.
He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected asking for money never came. As the silence between us widened, it seemed that a voice inside me said, “Ask him if he needs any help.”
“Do you need any help?” I asked.
He answered in three simple but meaningful words that I shall never forget. We often look for wisdom in great men and women, and we expect it from those of higher learning and achievements. I expected nothing but a dirty hand from him, but he said three words that shook me.
“Don’t we all?” he said.
I was feeling high, successful and important above a beggar in the street, until those three words hit me like a shot.
Don’t we all?
I needed help. Maybe not for a bus fare or for a place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for a bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those three little words still ring true. No matter how much you have, you need help too. No matter how little you have, no matter how loaded you are with problems, even without money or a place to sleep, you can give help.

46. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Those who are poor are in greater need of help.B. Anybody should give help to others.
C. Poor as a man may be, he has dignity.D. Whoever we are, we need help.

“College is a fresh start.” If you’ve ever dreamed of improving the beauty of your room at home but haven’t gotten around to actually cleaning it up, then beautifying a brand-new space can be a very exciting event.
At the very beginning, let your walls speak for you. Sure, the bare walls in your room may not seem like much at first, but they give you the chance to express yourself. Don’t just limit yourself to posters, like those of your most-loved stars—you can produce up-to-date wall art with simple blue tape or make an interesting collage (拼貼畫) of old ticket ends. You can even work together with your roommates beforehand if you want a particular design for your room and plan out what to be done according to the subject.
Of course, you’d like to win the race to find space. It’s no secret that space is a bit too narrow in college, but there are plenty of ways to enlarge your room. Many students lift their beds higher with bed risers in order to store things under. If you’re running low on floor space, then take a tip from NASA and look up. You can hang shoe racks (鞋架) on your doors and keep your life organized by posting a timetable or dry-erase board on your wall. You can also replace big floor lamps with cool hanging lanterns or mini-lights.
Another point is that it is important to try to keep home close to heart. However, when you choose something to beautify your room, it’s important to give it a personal touch. A photo of friends and family members can be great to look at when you’re feeling lonely. A meaningful gift from a loved one can bring old memories to your new lifestyle. College may be a new turning point of life, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave your home life behind.
47. According to the passage, a particular design of a college room can ____ .
A. help understand more of the designerB. express what the roommates like or dislike
C. produce up-to-date wall artD. use posters of most-loved stars
48. In this passage, if one turns to NASA for a tip, it means that he/she ____ .
A. tries to keep their college life organized
B. wants to make full use of their room space
C. replaces something too big with some smaller ones
D. hates to make room for themselves to learn
49. Which of the following objects are often used on the wall for students to keep home close to heart?
A. Star posters, dry-erase boards, books.B. Photos of loved ones, gifts.
C. College photos, floor lamps, lanterns.D. Childhood toys, mini-lights, wall papers.
50. From what we’ve read above, we can infer that ____ .
A. first year college students cannot beautify their rooms
B. at colleges there are no big rooms to live or study in
C. this passage is mostly taken from something like a guide book
D. college rooms are where you have to beautify

第三部分 寫作(共三節(jié),滿分60分)
第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)
閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。
[1] I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day. But I became invisible, absent from the conversation.
[2] The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Recently I was in a car with three friends. The driver told us to be quiet because he could not hear the person on the other end of his cell phone. There we were, four friends going down the highway, unable to talk to one another because of a tool designed to make communication easier.
[3] Why is it that the more connected we get, ? Every advance in communications technology is a hurt to the closeness of human interaction (互動). With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone.
[4] More and more. I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation. Or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I didn’t really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier.
[5] So I’ve put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging with people who live near me, no cell-phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I’m home.
56. What does the author think about communications technology according to the first two paragraphs? (No more
than 15 words)
57. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
58. Fill in the blanks in Paragraph 3 with proper words. (No more than 7 words)
59. How does the author feel when the industry devoted to helping him keep in touch? (No more than 8 words)
