Cindy Jiang現(xiàn)就讀于美國馬薩諸塞州波士頓地區(qū)的一所女子高中Academy of Notre Dame (圣母學(xué)院高中)，寄宿在當(dāng)?shù)匾粋€友好家庭。得知她在美國的學(xué)習(xí)和生活都適應(yīng)得很好，與友好家庭也相處和睦，我作為她的留學(xué)申請指導(dǎo)顧問打心底為她高興。考慮到還有一部分學(xué)生不是特別適應(yīng)留學(xué)寄宿生活，以及很多來新東方咨詢美國中學(xué)留學(xué)的家長對此的擔(dān)憂，我萌生了讓Cindy寫篇文章的想法，希望通過她的經(jīng)驗(yàn)分享，可以幫助那些已經(jīng)身在美國的留學(xué)生更快更好地適應(yīng)新環(huán)境，也可以讓那些有意出國讀高中的學(xué)生提早了解情況，為將來的留學(xué)寄宿生活做好充分的準(zhǔn)備。

Cindy很樂意幫這個忙，當(dāng)她把寫文章分享寄宿生活的打算告訴她寄宿家庭的媽媽時，她那位熱情的美國媽媽表示非常愿意代替Cindy來向中國的家長和學(xué)生傳遞自己的心聲，于是就有了下面這封美國媽媽的來信。

The following are my beliefs regarding the student exchange program. More rapidly than any other time in history the world is changing. \"Global economy\" is more than just a buzz phrase (口號) used to describe the globalization of markets; it is a movement that will transform our world and perhaps create greater balance between all nations. With increased interaction between countries it is important for us to learn to work together and understand each other's cultures as best we can. It is our civil obligation (責(zé)任). The opportunity to study abroad is a powerful advantage towards building this integration (融合). It is more than just an education. It is a chance to build international relations， friendships， and a cultural understanding that is not achieved more effectively in any other way. More importantly， however， it is a chance to respect， value， and embrace each other so that the novel idea of world peace can be better realized. Through mutual understanding we can enrich ourselves， and the world， so that we can better work together in harmony.

It takes an exceptional young person to make the decision to leave his or her homeland to study abroad， but the rewards are many. Perhaps the greatest and most obvious benefit is that there is no better way to learn a language than to be immersed in (沉浸于) the culture that speaks that language. Not only do you learn the vocabulary more quickly， but you also learn to speak and understand the proper cultural context of that language. Fully understanding another language gives you the ability to build stronger international relationships. In a world where nations are more rapidly relying on each other for goods， services， and mutual trust and understanding， a person who is competent (勝任的) in another language becomes invaluable. Realizing that learning the language is your most valuable benefit， you must also understand that it will be one of your greatest challenges. It is best to learn as much of the language as you can before you leave home. This will make your experience more rewarding.

#8195;#8195; Another obvious advantage in choosing to study abroad is that you will have the opportunity to travel to places that you may have never visited otherwise. Major cities， monuments， museums， historical sights， and even favorite vacations destinations can be explored during weekends and school breaks. It's more than just traveling to another country; it's experiencing it!

As you experience life in another country you will learn much about yourself. It is often said that it's a life-changing experience as well as one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do. I believe this to be true. You will be challenged in many different ways and it will be up to you to call upon your own set of values in order to make decisions which best suit your goals. Your successes will be your own. You will make new friends; friends that will perhaps help shape your future， relationships that may last a lifetime. Your experience will also set you apart from your peers. Accepting the challenge of international study implies that you are a self-motivated driven individual who is willing to go above and beyond what is considered necessary in order to succeed. This will be valuable in a global society.

As a host mom， what I find most valuable is that you will be able to teach me about your culture， traditions， and values. You will be the gateway for my family to help us embrace， more fully， the customs you value. It is my hope that we can mutually share our values， beliefs， and cultural understanding in order to help create goodwill (善意) for the betterment of all nations. In short， I want to do my part in promoting peace and acceptance of all cultures throughout the world.

2. 有效學(xué)習(xí)語言，結(jié)識新朋友。學(xué)習(xí)一門語言最為直接和有效的方式，莫過于完全沉浸在這門語言的環(huán)境中。這樣一來，你不但能夠較快地掌握詞匯，還能在接觸使用這門語言時對它所處的文化語境有更深刻的認(rèn)識和了解。除此之外，你還能結(jié)交新朋友，而這些朋友將可能影響你將來的發(fā)展和人際關(guān)系。

3. 四處旅行，豐富人生閱歷。去一個不同的國家留學(xué)，也就意味著在平常周末時間或者短假期里，你將有很多機(jī)會前往那個國家的主要城市、各類博物館、有名的歷史景點(diǎn)以及度假勝地。這絕對不同于普通意義上走馬觀花似的旅游，因?yàn)槟阏钤谀莻€國家，你切切實(shí)實(shí)地體會著那里的風(fēng)土人情和文化，所以感觸也會更加真實(shí)、深刻。

4. 更好地認(rèn)識自己，學(xué)會獨(dú)立。當(dāng)你獨(dú)自在異國他鄉(xiāng)生活時，你將會更好地認(rèn)識真實(shí)的自己。的確，留學(xué)經(jīng)歷將會是每個留學(xué)生一生中最大的財富，足以改變?nèi)说囊簧?。美國媽媽相信這一點(diǎn)，很多有過留學(xué)經(jīng)歷的學(xué)生也都對此感同身受。當(dāng)你獨(dú)自一人時，面對各方面的挑戰(zhàn)，只能運(yùn)用自己的價值觀來作出最符合自己目標(biāo)的決定。這種能力無疑將會幫助你在未來獲得成功，而這段寶貴的留學(xué)經(jīng)歷也會令你在同齡人中脫穎而出。

需要做的準(zhǔn)備

掌握一門語言會讓你受益匪淺，同時你必須明白它也將成為你面對的最大挑戰(zhàn)之一。無論你的英語水平是好還是壞，到國外后都會面臨一個或長或短的適應(yīng)期。在這個適應(yīng)期內(nèi)，你既要面對因語言障礙導(dǎo)致的溝通不暢，也要面對文化差異帶來的困惑。要是在國內(nèi)，或許還有父母可以幫你，而當(dāng)你獨(dú)自一人身處異國時，就不得不積極調(diào)整自己，靈活地應(yīng)對各種挑戰(zhàn)。到美國后，留學(xué)生將處在全英文的生活和學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境中，如果沒有一定的英語基礎(chǔ)，就很難進(jìn)行日常的溝通交流，那么你不僅將面臨生活中的種種困難，學(xué)業(yè)上也將面臨巨大的障礙。因此，大家應(yīng)盡量在出國前做好充分的準(zhǔn)備，注意以下幾點(diǎn)：

1. 提前了解美國文化

提前熟悉這個國家的禮儀和一些特別的風(fēng)土人情是將來和當(dāng)?shù)厝撕湍老嗵幍那疤釛l件之一。建議大家在出國前閱讀一些關(guān)于美國文化的書籍，學(xué)習(xí)當(dāng)?shù)氐奈幕岸Y儀風(fēng)俗，避免將來因?yàn)闊o知而導(dǎo)致誤會或?qū)擂蔚膱雒?。另外，特別提醒大家一定要學(xué)會并常用Please和Thank You之類的禮貌用語，這一點(diǎn)在美國人的溝通中十分必要和重要。

2. 遵守學(xué)校和寄宿家庭的規(guī)定

中國人有句老話：“不以規(guī)矩，不成方圓?！边@句話可謂放之四海而皆準(zhǔn)。所以大家到達(dá)美國之后，首先要先問清楚學(xué)校和寄宿家庭的Rules，比如：在美國很多學(xué)校是不允許學(xué)生帶手機(jī)上課的，有的學(xué)校會要求學(xué)生按時完成作業(yè)，否則會影響最后的考試成績。在寄宿家庭里，建議大家尊重寄宿家庭的生活習(xí)慣，注意日常生活中的小細(xì)節(jié)，如在布置你的房間之前先征得寄宿家庭的同意、保持房間干凈整潔等。

3. 要學(xué)會提升溝通能力

中國學(xué)生一般都比較羞澀，不喜歡主動和別人溝通，通常喜歡把事情悶在心里，一旦遇到問題，不善于求助于同學(xué)、寄宿家庭和學(xué)校，反而會打電話向自己的父母抱怨，不僅引起許多不必要的誤會，而且也不能解決問題。在這封美國媽媽的來信結(jié)尾我們看到，寄宿家庭的父母都是很愿意提供幫助的，所以建議大家出現(xiàn)問題時，要善于求助于學(xué)?；蚣乃藜彝?，學(xué)會溝通，共同協(xié)商解決。

4. 保持良好心態(tài)

留學(xué)生要時刻謹(jǐn)記自己出國的初衷，即學(xué)習(xí)語言知識和文化，而不是旅游或者享受。擺正了這一心態(tài)，你就不會再為了一些諸如“住宿條件不如家里好”“飯菜不好吃”等無關(guān)緊要的事情而影響心情了。這樣一來，相信你也能更快融入當(dāng)?shù)氐膶W(xué)習(xí)和生活，在收獲更多知識的同時也交到更多的朋友，不斷歷練自己，從而不斷成長，為未來積累一筆無形的財富。
