        A

Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressure from their parents to do well at school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a wonderful life. Though this may be good ideas for those very bright students, it can have very bad results for many students who are not good at learning.

Unfortunately, a number of students killed themselves. Others are using drugs. Some do bad things and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important and leave school before they have finished their study.

It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers’ work. What’s worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku—cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams. They do not try to educate students in any real sense of the real world. Almost three quarters of the junior or high school population attend these juku—cram schools.

Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologists(心理學(xué)家)now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard rules as being harmful to the development of each student and believe that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good students.

        56. According to the passage, a lot of Japanese students are unhappy at school because ___ .

        A. they must work very hardB. they find they can’t do well at school

        A. you can be taken good care of by the teachers

        B. teachers are responsible(負(fù)責(zé))for their students

        C. you learn as much as possible in a short time before taking exams

        D. students have their classes in the evening

        59. The underlined word“They”in the last paragraph refers to ___ .

        A. teachersB. studentsC. parentsD. psychologists

        60. What is mainly discussed in this passage?

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels(分貝)measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety—five would have the same effect.

Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales’ ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected(受感染的).

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.

Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.

        61. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?

        A. The man—made noises.B. The noises made by themselves.

        C. The sound of earthquakes.D. The sound of the ice—breaking.

        62. Which of the following is discussed in the second paragraph?

        A. Different places with different types of noises.

        B. The human ears are easily hurt to all types of noises.

        C. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.

        D. The ocean animal’s reaction to noises.

        63. As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is true?

        A. They are deaf to noises.B. Noises at a certain level may hurt them.

        C. They are easily confused by noises.D. Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.

        64. We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would ___ .

        A. prevent them from doing their research workB. help them a lot in their research work

        C. do good to their healthD. increase the industrial output(產(chǎn)量)

        65. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?

        A. They will try their best to decrease noise.B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.

        C. They will study the effect of different noises.D. They will study the effect of ocean noise pollution.
