The very wealthy English Baron Fitzgerald had only one child, a son, who understandably was the apple of his eye. His wife died when the child was in his early teens. So Fitzgerald did a lot of things for his son. Unfortunately the son died in his late teens.
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald’s wealth greatly increased. He spent a lot on art works of the great artists. Later Fitzgerald himself became seriously ill. Before his death, he had carefully prepared his will(遺囑)as to how his wealth would be settled—to sell all his collection at an auction(拍賣(mài)).
Because of the large quantity and high quality of his collection, a huge crowd of possible buyers came to the auction. Many of them were museum directors and private collectors anxious to bid(出價(jià)). Before the auction, the art works were shown, among which was a painting of Fitzgerald’s son by an unknown artist. Because of its poor quality, it received little attention.
When it was time for the auction, the auctioneer asked the crowd to pay attention. First the lawyer read from Fitzgerald’s will that the first art work to be auctioned was the painting of his son.
The poor—quality painting didn’t receive any bidders, except one old man who had served the son and loved him, and who offered the only bid.
As soon as the man bought the painting for less than one English pound, the auctioneer stopped the bidding and asked the lawyer to read again from the will. Charles Blackman: Alice in Wonderland
An Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Australia
10 June—12 August 2010
Venue: The Ian Potter Centre
Admission: Free entry
Charles Blackman is famous for his beautiful painting of dreams. In 1956, he heard for the first time Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary story of Alice in Wonderland – the story of a Victorian girl who falls down into a rabbit hole, meets a lot of funny characters and experiences all kinds of things. At that time,Blackman’s wife was becoming blind. The story of Alice going through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also showed so much of his own life. All this contributed(促成)to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings.
