        A

        Welcome to the Amazon

The Amazon rainforest covers 2.5 million square miles. It is the largest remaining tropical(熱帶的)forest in the world. It gets more than nine feet of rain every year. The Amazon is in South America.

Almost two—thirds of the rainforest is in Brazil but it is also in parts of Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. The first Europeans to discover the Amazon were Spanish, who found it while searching for gold and silver to bring back to their king.

The first people they met in the rainforest were women warriors(戰(zhàn)士), so Francisco de Orella named the river after a Greek myth(神話)about women warriors called Amazons. Even though the Amazon makes up only two percent of the earth’s surface(表面)area, it is where more than half of the world’s plants and animal species are. The Amazon has 60,000 types of plants, 1,000 species of birds and 300 types of other animals.

Jaguars, piranhas and pink freshwater dolphins are just a few of the animals that live in the Amazon rainforest. Because the Amazon is so large and has so many plants, it helps the world breathe a little easier by changing carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into oxygen. The Amazon is also home to thousands of undiscovered plants and animals that might be used to cure(治療)diseases, like AIDS, one day. Uncontrolled development and forest fires are hurting the Amazon.

The scientific study of earthquakes is comparatively new. Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded, and the natural causes of earthquakes were not well understood. Those who did look for natural causes often reached conclusions that seem funny today.

The earliest earthquake for which we have descriptive information occurred in China in 1177 BC. The Chinese earthquake catalog describes several dozen large earthquakes in China during the next few thousand years. Earthquakes in Europe were mentioned as early as 580 BC, but the earliest for which we have some descriptive information occurred in the mid—16th century. The earliest known earthquakes in the Americas were in Mexico in the late 14th century and in Peru in 1471, but descriptions of the effects were not well recorded. By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world.

The most widely felt earthquakes in the recorded history of North America were a series that occurred in 1811—1812 near New Madrid, Missouri. A great earthquake, whose magnitude(震級)is estimated to have been about 8, occurred on the morning of December 16, 1811. Another great earthquake occurred on January 23, 1812, and a third, the strongest yet, on February 7, 1812. Aftershocks were nearly continuous between these great earthquakes and continued for months afterwards. These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver. Because the population in these regions was small, the destruction of human life and property was slight. If just one of these enormous earthquakes occurred in the same area today, millions of people and buildings and other structures worth billions of dollars would be affected.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the most destructive in the recorded history of North America—the earthquake and the fire that followed killed nearly 700 people and left the city in ruins.

        61. What’s the best title for this passage?

        A. The scientific study of earthquakes.B. Earthquakes in history.

        C. The effects of earthquakes on humans.D. Why earthquakes occur.

        62. According to the passage, the Chinese earthquake catalog ___ .

        A. has the earliest record of earthquakes in the world

        B. contains not only large earthquakes but also small ones

        C. records several earthquakes that have occurred in the world

        D. describes all the earthquakes that have occurred in China

        63. When did published descriptions of the effects of earthquakes become popular in the world?

        A. In the 1300s.B. In the 1400s.C. In the 1500s.D. In the 1600s.

        64. According to the passage, the earthquakes in 1811—1812 in North America ___ .

        A. killed a large number of peopleB. occurred in San Francisco

        C. could be felt very far awayD. almost destroyed entire cities

        65. We can infer from the passage that ___ .

        A. earthquakes weren’t scientifically studied before the 18th century

        B. earthquakes can be avoided with the development of science and technology

        C. most of the early earthquakes caused little damage
