Jiangbei District Plays Part in the 1911 Revolution
By Wang Jing
Jiangbei District, located in the northwest of Ningbo, is the largest downtown district of the city in eastern Zhejiang. Jiangbei measures 208.73 square kilometers with Yong River on its southeast side and Yao River on the south. Geographically, the district has played a unique part in the urban growth of Ningbo. The district also features profound culture, history, beautiful landscape and rich water resources.
With a history of 2,500 years, Jiangbei District bears witness to the historical changes of China. In particular, the 1911 Revolution is a lasting memory of the port city.
Let us go back to the year 1900 and two men caught our eyes. They were the Zhao brothers from a rich business family dealing in shipping industry in Jiangbei District, Ningbo. The elder brother was Zhao Jiafan (1872-1925) and the younger brother Zhao Jiayi (1876-1925). Determined to fight against the rotten Qing and seek democracy and independence, the two brothers sailed to Japan in 1900. After making acquaintance with Dr. Sun Yet-san there, the two brothers embarked on the task of reconstructing China.
In 1905, the Zhao brothers joined the Chinese United League and started sponsoring Dr. Sun Yet-san’s revolutionary undertakings with their business proceeds. Zhao Jiayi set up Ningbo Normal School with a group of people in July 1905, to build up strength to overthrow the Qing government. In 1906, the two brothers went to Shanghai and took up residence in Sanjia Garden on Pingqiao Road. Their residence was one of the contact points for the revolutionists in Shanghai and from abroad.
Learning in 1909 that Dr. Sun urgently needed funds to continue his revolutionary activities after the failure of two massive uprisings in Guangdong, the Zhao brothers rushed back to Ningbo, sold the property left to them by their father, and delivered the money to Dr. Sun Yet-san. Zhao Jiafan started four newspapers in 1910 successively, and participated in the 1911 Revolution led by Sun with Jiayi in person. In 1911, Zhao Jiayi went back to Jiangbei, setting up Ningbo Branch of the Chinese United League. The chapter took part in the Wuchang Uprising in October. After one month, Ningbo was declared restored to the Chinese people, and Zhao Jiayi was elected the Governor of Ningbo Military Government.
After taking the provisional presidency of the Chinese Government in Nanjing in 1912, Dr. Sun appointed Zhao Jiafan as Director of the National Mint. On October 6, 1913, Yuan Shikai, a military strongman among the Northern Warlords, replaced Dr. Sun and attained the position of President. The Zhao brothers resigned from their government positions in the wake of Dr. Sun’s resignation.
In 1916Jiangbei witnessed some most memorable days in its history. At the invitation of Zhejiang Provincial Governor Lu Gongwang, Dr. Sun Yat-sen arrived in Ningbo in the accompaniment of Zhao Jiayi on August 22, 1916 after Dr. Sun’s visit to Hangzhou and Shaoxing. The great man received a warm-hearted reception in Ningbo. On the following day, he gave a speech at No. 4 Middle School, praising Ningbo’s achievements in business and industry and putting forward his expectation of the future of this ancient port city. The people in Jiangbei were deeply impressed with Dr. Sun and the memory has passed down from generation to generation.
The streets and places renamed after the Xinhai Revolution in Ningbo also bear witness to the 1911 Revolution. After the success of the 1911 Revolution, three streets in Cicheng, a town next to Jiangbei District, were renamed Minzu Road, Minquan Road and Minsheng Road, representing the Three Principles of the People put forward by Dr. Sun Yat-sen: Nationalism, Civil Rights and People’s Livelihood. These names reflect the spirit and character of the 1911 Revolution.
The memory of the 1911 Revolution and its key players also lies in the lives of local residents. Granny Yao Wanyi was born in November 1913. She was to get married on May 28, 1929, but the wedding had to take place four days before the schedule because the week from May 26 through June 1 was set aside for the 7-day mourning for transporting the coffin of Dr. Sun Yat-sen from Biyun Temple in Beijing to his mausoleum in Nanjing . This is how Yao Wanyi, an illiterate woman, got to know about Dr. Sun Yet-san.
The memory of the 1911 revolution can also be seen in the pattern design used in the mold for making New Year’s hard rice-cake. Cicheng boasts the tradition of making the rice cake. After the success of the 1911 Revolution, local people made the mold of the bicolor flag of the revolution and the flag design appeared in the hard rice-cake.
