The Ring Dome was original ly conceived as a temporary structure for the Storefront for Art and Architecture gal lery’s 25th anniversary in New York.Since then, it has been instal led at various locations around the world, including Kitakyushu and Yokohama,Japan, as wel l as Milan, Italy. It is a dome-shaped structure with a diameter of 8.65 meters, composed of about 1000 plastic hula hoops. The hula hoops are randomly layered and fastened together by about 10 000 zip ties. This structure was designed to be easily assembled by non-professionals such as students, artists and other volunteers.
Designed for experimentation, adjustments and an almost primitive assembly method, this project’s main objective was not the final result but more the celebratory, shared experience of constructing the piece. By simply severing the zip ties, the hula hoops could then be reused or redistributed, rather than discarded, making it possible to return the hula hoops to their original purpose in a more environmental ly friendly conclusion.
The hula hoops are made of translucent white PVC and at night, electroluminescent wires contained in about 200 hula hoops on the dome’s sur face glow gently and create a completely new environment.□
