        What Is a Robot?

Robots are machines that use a computer to “think”. People must put information into the computer. This is called programming. Then the computer tells the robot what to do.

Robots can be programmed to do many kinds of work. They are used in factories because they can use tools(工具), hold up heavy things, and work without resting, eating or going to the bathroom!

Other robots are used for dangerous work. They can work where it is too hot for humans and they can even work under the sea, because they don’t need air! Outer space is another place where robots can work.

Some amusement parks use robots. They might be dressed up and made to look like children or adults. They are programmed to move and speak like people. Walt Disney’s Disneyland was the first public place to use robots in this way.

Today, robots are useful for both work and fun, and they will be used for more things in the future!

        1. Robots are machines that the computer tells them what to do.

        2. Robots can work under the sea because they needn’t any air.

        3. Robots are only useful for work.

        Saying You’re Sorry

        “I didn’t do anything!” “It’s not my fault(過錯(cuò))!”

        “Say you’re sorry!”

Does this sound familiar(熟悉的)? If so, you’re like lots of other kids who sometimes argue with their friends and family members. Let’s face it. It’s not always easy to get along with sisters and brothers, parents and friends. Kids aren’t perfect(完美的) and they sometimes do things that get them into trouble.

When you begin to think about the other people’s feelings, you begin to feel sorry for what you did or said. You might even feel ashamed(慚愧的) if you did something that you knew was wrong. Don’t worry!Saying “I’m sorry” can help.

Saying you’re sorry is called apologizing(道歉). When you apologize, you’re telling someone that you’re sorry for hurting(傷害) him/her. You might also say that you will try to be better.

After apologizing, you might feel a little better, and the other people probably will, too, so don’t forget to say sorry if you hurt someone or make someone unhappy!

Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, “Friends are God’s way of taking care of us.” But how do you find real friendship and keep it?

The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed(種子) and take care of it to make it grow.

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient(耐心的). For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints(埋怨) and do his or her best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.

But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter.

There are three steps to be friends again:

Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

        1. Sally wants to tell students the ways to ____.

        A. find friendsB. plant treesC. get happyD. keep fit

        2. What makes good friends? A good friend should ____.

        A. be lovely and coolB. be kind and patient

        C. have lots of moneyD. have good looks

        3. According to the text, you can ____ your friend after a fight.

        A. buy a present forB. never say a word to

        C. have dinner withD. write a letter to

        4. What is the best title of the text? ____.

        A. Teenagers and Friendship B. The Good Friends Around You

        C. The Trouble of Growing upD. The Care and Keeping of Friends

Some people seem to have a knack(竅門) for learning language. They can pick up new vocabularies, master rules of grammar and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. So what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps, they have discovered a few of the techniques(技巧), which can help them learn the language easier.

First of all, successful language learners are independent(獨(dú)立的) learners. They have their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teachers to explain, they try to find the patterns and rules by themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and draw their own conclusions from the mistakes.

Successful language learners are active in learning, so they do not wait for but look for a chance to use the language. They find people who speak the language and let those people correct them when they make a mistake. They will try any way to communicate. They are willing to repeat what they hear for first time again and again. When they have some difficulty in communicating, they can adjust(調(diào)整) what is incorrect or incomplete. And they are not afraid to make mistakes and ready to start from the very beginning. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.

Finally, successful language learners are learners with purpose. They want to learn language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practise using the language regularly because they want to master it.

        True(T) or False(F):

        1. Some people are excellent language learners because they have mastered the correct ways to learn languages.

        2. Successful language learners are passive in

learning, and they always wait for teachers to teach them.

        3. The most important purpose of learning languages for us is to get a good grade in the examinations.
