The posthumous image of the Austrian politician Jorg Haider, who died in a car crash on October 11th, was severely damaged today after his successor as leader of his far-right party, Stefan Petzner, tearfully revealed in an interview that the two were lovers. Petzner confessed\" We had a relationship that went far beyond friendship. Jouml;rg and I were connected by something really special. He was the man of my life.\" Haider, who at 58 was 31 years older than Petzner, was married with children, and attempted to present himself as a family man, but Petzner alleged that his wife tolerated his gay affairs. It then emerged that Haider's last hours, before his drunken high-speed crash, were spent in a gay nightclub quarrelling with his lover after Petzner saw him with a male prostitute.

Haider was despised by most Europeans, but popular with many in his native country. Austria, which presented herself after the war as the \"first victim of the Nazis,\" despite a majority of the population having eagerly welcomed the Anschluss (\"unification\") with Germany in 1938, has done little to come to terms with her fascist history. Both of Haider's parents were unrepentant Austrian Nazis. Haider, who had praised the Nazis and expressed anti-semitic sentiments, was originally the leader of the far-right \"Freedom Party.\" Anti-immigrant feelings, racism, and discontent with the staid government of the 90s, was enough to propel Haider's party into power in a coalition with the People's Party in 2000.

Other European governments immediately condemned the new government, refusing to shake hands with its members and imposing economic sanctions. As a result Haider stepped down from his government posts late in 2000, and the coalition government collapsed two years later.Haider split bitterly from his old party in 2003, forming a new party, the \"Alliance for the Future of Austria.\" Its survival as a political power looks doubtful after these new revelations.
