In a sense， the pity is one of the indispensable attractions of athletics.Actually， it is the pity that allows us to fully appreciate what a successful life is， to deeply understand what a colourful beauty is， even makes us realize how far we have fallen behind， so as to strive and catch up with the developed. 外編點評：“pity”用在這里不太合適，只有在為他人極端惡劣或不太樂觀的境遇感到同情時我們才會用到這個詞，換成“regret”會好很多，尤其是當我們談及自己的情感的時候。翻譯時應當注意不要遺漏形容詞的形容對象，如“the developed”?！癐t was witnessed”換成“we saw”或“the world witnessed”會更好。譯文整體上不錯，稍加修改，用詞再經(jīng)斟酌，會是一篇更好的譯文。

The Beijing Olympics witnessed the success and breakthroughs of the Chinese athletes. However， like any previous Olympic Games， much sentimental regret also imbedded in our memory. The cruelty of athletic sports determines that there also exists moving and tragic regret besides perfect performances. To some extent， regret is also one of the indispensable charms of athletic sports. It is regret that helps us enjoy the various flavors of victory; it is regret that gets us a profound understanding of the beauty of life in this colorful world and it is also regret that enables us to discover our inferiority， so that we could make continuous self-improvement and press forward.

外編點評：這是篇優(yōu)秀的譯文，不過有幾個小問題?！癷mbed”通常用被動式，應該說“was also imbedded in our memory”，這個詞用在這里太正式，最好換成“l(fā)eft us many sentimental regrets”?！癉etermines”應當換成“means”，因為“determine”暗指的兩者之間的聯(lián)系更直接更有力度，語氣要比“mean”強很多，用在這不太合適。
