The workers who brought the girl to the orphanage(孤兒院) knew little about her. The street where they found her had been her home for many years. Her parents were unknown. They left her long ago. At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else——to be independent(獨立). At twenty-one,she left the orphanage and began to work as a secretary. And then,in 1975,while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong Competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name,Mary Cheung, was known to everybody.

Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. When she was working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. “My English just wasnt good enough,” she said. Luckily, she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her.

Mary studied management(管理) at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. But she did not stop developing herself. Emily Dickinson was a very famous American poet. She wrote about 2,000 poems, but only four were published in her lifetime. No one wanted to publish her works because it was different from what other poets wrote. After Dickinson died, her poems were finally published. Then she became famous.

Some things about Emily Dickinsons life were strange and mysterious(神秘的). She was born in 1830,in a rich and well-known family in Amherst,Massachusetts. She had a brother and a sister. Emily was shy and quiet, but she had a lot of friends. She went to parties like other young girls of her age and met young men. But she did not fall in love with any of them and never married.

For a long time,Emily Dickinson did not want to see her friends. She stayed at home, reading, writing poems and working in the garden. Emily wrote her poems everywhere. She wrote them on bits of newspapers or anything that was near. Later, she wrote them out carefully. When she was 28,something happened. Emily was very upset. No one knew why. Some people said she loved a married man. Others said she was unhappy because nobody wanted to publish her poems. She kept on writing anyway.

As she got older,Emily often wanted to be alone. When someone came to her house, she ran upstairs to hide. For the last 16 years of her life, she never left her home. The curtains were always closed. She dressed only in white. One day Emily became ill,but she did not let the doctor go to her room. He could only see her from the doorway.

Dickinson died at the age of 55. Her sister found her poems, and the poems were finally published. Sadly,Emily Dickinson did not live to enjoy her great success.

Now great changes have taken place in my hometown. The environment has become more beautiful. The mountains have turned greener. The rivers are clearer and the sky is bluer. There are trees, flowers and grasses everywhere. People here live a better life. Their houses are large and bright. Many people have their own cars. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world come to visit my hometown.

Im sure my hometown will become better and better as time passes by.
