Glancing up， I can make out the fluttering yellow of the flag in the distance. Gripping the club， I take a wild and untrained swing at the ball， somehow manage to connect， and send it flying high over the green to drop out of sight somewhere in the water behind the hole. With a frown and a resigned shrug I take my seat， watching as the screen in front of me replays my disaster of a shot again and again.

You see， this is no ordinary golf course I'm playing on. I'm in the basement of the Jingdu Business Hotel， Beijing， holding a golf club for the first time in years and playing a couple of holes on a 3D golf simulator – one of the most advanced of its kind in existence.

Owned and operated by Avid Golf， a foreigner-run golf events organiser， the $50，000 golf simulator is one of the only systems of its kind in Beijing. The setup is surprisingly simple – a 10'x10' screen， a whopping great big sensor， a computer and different floor mats to stand on to give the feel of various terrain features is all that's required to operate one.

Using motion tracking technology， the simulator tracks the movement of both the golfer's swing and the ball， using this data to work out where the ball would have landed. The system is incredibly realistic， recreating weather and ground conditions perfectly， and capable of several different angles from which to view the results of your shot.

Where Avid Golf's simulator REALLY scores points， though， is on the graphics. The recreations of courses around the world - ranging from the world famous (St. Andrews， Pebble Beach， Harbour Town and Spyglass) to local links – are meticulously recreated and beautiful to look at. A Surround Sound system helps give the impression of being outdoors， with a soundtrack of bird songs， water noise and the whistle of the wind. In short， it's about as close to the real thing as you're going to get.

Even the most casual of golfers can benefit from the system's training capabilities – it allows play whatever the weather， giving golfers ample opportunity to get a round in， even during the winter.

Golf simulators like this have taken off like mad in the past few years – possibly as part of the \"social gaming\" craze kickstarted by the Nintendo Wii. In Japan and the US， \"golf bars\"， often containing up to a dozen such simulators， have leapt in popularity recently. In a way， it's like a karmic circle – video games derived from arcades where people would go to socialise， then promoted a more solitary lifestyle with the creation of consoles， and are now providing different ways for friends to socialise.

With a comfortable private bar and climate control， the Avid Golf simulator is the perfect place for a bunch of friends to spend a spare afternoon and， at roughly RMB 300 per person， it's a much cheaper alternative to visiting a real golf course. Even if you've never picked up a club in your life， this is still a great experience， a heck of a lot of fun， and doesn't require the vast amounts of walking that real golf normally entails.
