        Plot Outline

        Erick Peterson's Review

Questions will pop into your head soon after you pop the disc into your DVD player. Why does the film look grainy? What's with the shaky screen and the choppy sound? As you watch further, you will ask yourself why the film is so nasty, both sexually explicit and violent beyond necessity. And of course, the cultural references are likely to boggle your mind. The truth: there are a lot of things you aren't going to be able to understand in director Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, and you shouldn't see the film unless you are well-steeped in the history of American film culture and indulgent of Tarantino's peculiar quirks. If you do, however, understand the film's intent, you will recognize the genius of the work.

The story is flimsy, and its structure is absurd. Stuntman Mike (masterfully played by Kurt Russell) uses his \"deathproof\" car to hunt down and kill two groups of young women. He manages to kill the first group, but the second is more than he bargained for, and these women fight back. This is not actually one story but two, joined by exposition that is only tolerable because of the over-the-top silliness of the performers involved and the goofy lines they are fed.

Welcome to grindhouse, a genre of film known for the unconventional, wherein film rules are often abandoned. Grindhouse films, known for brutality and low production values, were (semi-) popular during the 70's, when Tarantino was a boy. And he made Death Proof so that he could re-create the fun and campy-ness of the films for a younger audience and so that he could improve upon the genre with his own wit and filmmaking know-how.

So whenever you see something of low quality or taste in this film, realize that it is intentional. Tarantino actually wanted the film to look like it had been stored improperly, cut haphazardly, and written on the fly. \"Errors\" in the film are supposed to be funny, as is the violence, sexuality, racism, and anything else that might otherwise offend. The car collision involving the first group of women is a good example. The cars hit head-on, thereby dismembering and (literally) defacing the girls in one car. The scene is gory and hideous, but Tarantino wants you to laugh during this scene, to take in the excessiveness of it all and chuckle at its stupidity. When hearing the painfully racist name of one of the characters (Jungle Julia), you should also laugh.

This bizarre humor is Tarantino's statement about film. Film is not real life, and we should not approach a film with the same mentality that we do the real world. And yet, there is some seriousness worth considering in Death Proof. How safe is our world? How are our own cars death machines? What madness exists in our fellow men? As we pop the DVD out of our players, we ask ourselves questions that are much larger than the questions we were asking when we first started watching. And that, my friends, is a sign of a brilliant movie.

        Dialogues

Mike: (handing Arlene and Julia two beers) Ladies?

        Arlene: (taking the beer) Thanks.

Mike: Cheers, Butterfly. \"The woods are lovely, dark, and deep… and I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep. Did you hear me Butterfly? Miles to go before you sleep.\"

        Julia: Sorry, Stuntman Burt-

        Mike: Mike.

Julia: Mike. She already broke off that dance.

Mike: (looking at Arlene) Is that true? Did I miss my chance? (silence) Do I frighten you? (Arlene nods) Is it my scar?

        Arlene: It's your car.

Mike: (sighs) Yeah, I know. Sorry. It's my mom's car.

Arlene: (smiles slightly) Have you been following us?

Mike: (chuckling) No. That's what I love about Austin. It's just so damn small.

Julia: You've seen this guy before?

Arlene: Saw him outside of Gueros.

Mike: And I saw you outside of Gueros too. You saw my car, I saw your legs. Now look, I ain't stalking ya'll but I didn't say I wasn't a wolf.

Arlene: So you really weren't following us?

Mike: I'm not followin ya, Butterfly. I just got lucky. So… how about that lap dance?

Julia: Sorry. It was a one time only offer and she did it earlier this evening at Antoine's.

        Mike: No she didn't.

        Arlene: How do you know?

Mike: I'm good that way. And you look a little touché.

        Arlene: What's touché?

        Mike: Wounded, slightly.

Arlene: Why should I be wounded?

Mike: Because you expected guys to be pestering you all night, but from your look I can tell nobody pestered you at all. That kind of hurt your feelings a little bit, didn't it? (silence) There are few things as fetching as a bruised ego on a beautiful angel. So… how about that lap dance?

Arlene: I think I'm gonna have to give you a raincheck.

Mike: Well, since you'll be leavin in the next couple of days, a raincheck would be worthless. But that's okay. I understand if I make you uncomfortable. You're still a nice girl. And I still like you. But I must warn you of something. You know how people say, \"you're okay in my book!\" or \"in my book, that's no good!\"? Well, I actually have a book. And everybody I ever meet goes in this book. And now I've met you and you're goin in the book. Except… I'm afraid I must file you… under \"chicken shit.\"

Arlene: (taking Mike's book) And what if I did it?

Mike: Well, definitely couldn't file you under \"chicken shit\" then, now could I?

        Arlene: What's your name again?

        Mike: Stuntman Mike.

Arlene: Well, Stuntman Mike. I'm Butterfly. My friend Jungle Julia over here says that juke box inside is pretty impressive.

        Mike: Yeah, it is.

Arlene: Yeah. Why don't you go get ready for your lap dance?

        Language Focus 語言點

        1 broke off

        2 It's my mom's car.

        3 Now look, I ain't stalking ya'll but I didn't say I wasn't a wolf.

4 And you look a little touché.

        5 I think I'm gonna have to give you a raincheck.、

6 you're okay in my book!

7 juke box inside is pretty impressive.

Abernathy: So Zoe, Kim, and I are in the Philippines at an outdoor rave.

Lee: What were you working on?

Kim: Three Kicks to the Head Part 3.

Abernathy: And admittedly, we're a little fucked up.

Zoe: Cheers to that. (they clink their glasses)

Abernathy: So Zoe, the genius, wants to take a picture of me. And it's dark as hell and you can't see shit. So she's got her camera and keeps sayin, \"Step back a little!\" So I do. Then, \"A little further!\" So I step back a little further. Then, \"A little more!\" So I do! Then I realize I'm right at the edge of a 7-foot concrete ditch (laughs of disbelief) with God knows how many rocks and broken bottles and rats in it. And if I fell in that fuckin thing, I probably would've broken my fucking neck. So, I'm yelling at her. \"Zoe! You almost killed me!\" So we laugh about it and walk a little further, and Zoe starts fuckin around. And then, if she doesn't fall in the fucking ditch! (all laugh)

        Lee: Nice, nice. (clapping)

Zoe: (bowing) Thank you. Thank you. I remember taking a step and looking down. Just as I'm thinking, \"Here's that ditch Abbie was talking about!\" Bam! I'm in the fucking ditch!

        Lee: (laughs) What happened?

Abernathy: What? With Zoe the cat? Nothing! If I fell in that fuckin thing, they would've had to helicopter me out of there. Zoe just lands on her feet. But then later, I started feeling a little bad about myself. Zoe falls in the ditch and it's nothing. We're laughing about it. If I fell in that fuckin thing, I probably would've been fucking paralyzed.

Lee: Oh, honey. You can't think like that. You know, we all have our individual talents and that just happens to be one of Zoe's.

Kim: Well physically speaking, Zoe is amazing. I mean, agility, reflexes, nimbleness? There's few human beings that can fuck with Zoe on that front.

Zoe: Aww. Kim I like you too.

Kim: Having said that, before you get too envious of Zoe's prowess, you're missing the most important part of that story. (looking at Abernathy) You didn't fall in the ditch. Zoe did! Zoe even knew there was a ditch there because you told her and she still fell in. So Lee's right. We all have our talents.

Zoe: Hey. I \"resemble\" that remark. (all laugh at Zoe's intentional misuse of that word) So Kim. You still packin Roscoe?

        Kim: Check it out, bitch.

        Zoe: Oh, nice one mate.

        Kim: I know this.

        Lee: What's Roscoe?

        Zoe: Roscoe's a pistol.

Lee: (to Kim) You carry a gun?

        Kim: Uh-huh.

Lee: You have a license to carry it?

Kim: Yeah. (sarcastically) When I became a secret service agent, they gave me a license.

Lee: (oblivious to the sarcasm) Oh, I didn't know you were… (all stare at Lee in disbelief) Okay, I didn't say it, alright? Stop lookin at me. I didn't say it. God. (to Abernathy) Did you know Kim carried a gun?

Abernathy: Yes. Now, do I approve? No. Do I know? Yes.

Kim: Look. I don't know what futuristic utopia you live in, but the world I live in? A bitch need a gun.

Abernathy: You can't get around the fact that people who carry guns tend to get shot more than people who don't.

Kim: And you can't get around the fact that if I go down to the laundry room in my building at midnight enough times, I might get my ass raped.

Lee: Don't do your laundry at midnight.

Kim: Fuck that. I wanna do my laundry whenever the fuck I wanna do my laundry.

Abernathy: There are other things you can carry other than a gun. Pepper spray.

Kim: Uh, motherfucker try to rape me, I don't wanna give him a skin rash! I’m gonna shot that nigga down!

Abernathy: How about a knife at least?

Kim: Yeah, you know what happens to motherfuckers who carry knives? They get shot! Look, if I ever become a famous actress, I won't carry a gun. I'll hire me a dude dirtin the gun and he'll carry the gun. And when shit goes down, I'll sit back and laugh but until that day, it's Wild West motherfucker.

        Language Focus 語言點

        1 …at an outdoor rave

2 Three Kicks to the Head Part 3.

        3 we're a little fucked up.

        4 I \"resemble\" that remark.

        實際上,正確的句子應該是“I resent that remark”。

        5 You can't get around the fact…

        “get around the fact”是個常用表達,意思是“意識到,明白”。

        6 I'll hire me a dude dirtin the gun…

        7 it's Wild West motherfucker.

Kim: What are you waiting for? Ask him to let you drive it by yourself.

Zoe: I intend to but first, I need to ask you something.

        Kim: What?

Zoe: If he lets us take it out on our own, I want to play ship's master.

        Kim: Oh, hell no!

        Zoe: Keep it down!

Kim: Ain't no way I'm doin ship's master.

        Zoe: For Christ's sakes…

        Kim: Don't blaspheme!

        Zoe: Sorry.

Kim: Now. What did you say after the last time?

Zoe: Look, I know what I said.

        Kim: What did you say?

Zoe: I know I said we shouldn't do this-

Kim: No, you didn't say we shouldn't. You said we ain't ever gonna do that again.

        Zoe: But-

Kim: But my ass! You said not only are we never gonna play ship's master again, but you also said if you ever do what you try to do now, to not only refuse but that I had permission to physically restrain your ass if necessary. Now, did you or did you not say that?

        Zoe: Well-

Kim: No no no no! Answer the question motherfucker! Did you or did you not say that?

Zoe: Yes, I said that. However-

        Kim: Whatever with your however!

Zoe: Look. I know I said it. And I know I meant it.

Kim: Damn skippy, you meant it!

Zoe: Yeah but when I said it, I didn't mean in America!

        Kim: Oh, nigga please!

Zoe: Really! I mean, really, we should never play ship's master again in New Zealand or Australia.

Kim: You are such a liar!

Zoe: Look. I know what I said when I said it. But when I said it, I didn't know I'd ever come to America! And when I said it, if I had known that I was gonna come to America and have the opportunity to play ship's master in a fucking Vanishing Point Challenger, I would've added a however. Right?

Kim: Okay, oddly enough. I actually understood that. However! Just because you talked yourself into some stupid shit doesn't mean I have lost my goddamn mind. You need two people to play ship's master and I ain't playin.

Zoe: (exasperated) I'll be your best friend!

Kim: I don't need me no best friend who lives on the other side of planet earth.

        Zoe: I'll crack your back.

        Kim: You'll crack it anyway.

Zoe: Well, of course I'll crack it anyway. But now, while I'm here, I'll be your back cracking slave. Whenever you want it, you got it. You don't even have to ask for it. You just order me to do it. Just be like, \"Bitch, get over here and get busy.\"

Kim: (considers it) You'll crack my back. You'll give me foot massages. And after shower, you put moisturizer on my butt.

Zoe: Deal! (both go over to Abernathy) So, we're gonna see if this guy will let us take the car out without him. If he does, you wait here with Lee and we'll be back in a moment.

        Abernathy: (confused silence) What?

Zoe: I said, we're gonna see if this guy will let us take the car out without him-

Abernathy: I heard what you said. I just can't believe what you said. You know you two got some fuckin balls.

        Zoe: What?

Abernathy: Don't play dumbass with me! I've been up all night. I'm still a little drunk and I have a hangover. I should be in my hotel room asleep, not fuckin around here on tobacco road. But because Zoe wanted to drive some fuckin Vanishing Point car, I'm here. Now you two got the balls to ask me, no. Scratch that. Tell me I gotta go make conversation with Tom Jones while the cool kids get to go out and play? Bullshit on that!

        Kim: It ain't like that.

Abernathy: Then what's it like, Kim?

Zoe: You guys are our collateral. He is never gonna go for it if we all go.

Abernathy: I really think one human being will be collateral enough.

Zoe: You're not gonna wanna do what we're doing.

Abernathy: What? To drive a car?

Zoe: We're doing more than that.

        Abernathy: What? Drive it fast?

Zoe: We're doing more than that.

Kim: Actually, we payin you a compliment. Cause we gonna do some stupid shit. But that's ok, we're stunt people. We ain't got good sense. But you got good sense. And anybody with good sense ain't gonna wanna do what we're doing.

Abernathy: How do you know that I don't wanna do it?

        Zoe: Cause… you're a mom.

Abernathy: You know, we're supposed to be this big posse. But that's the excuse you guys use whenever you want to exclude me from something. So, what is it you two daredevils are doing that I'm just so uncool I couldn't possibly understand?

Zoe: You know, we're kind of conning this guy so maybe it's best if we don't go into detail about it while he's watching us. Besides, he's probably not gonna let us do it anyway.

Abernathy: Okay. How about this? I'll talk him into it. But if I talk him into it, I go along.

        Language Focus 語言點

        1 ship's master

        2 Don't blaspheme!

3 I had permission to physically restrain your ass if necessary.

        4 Oh, nigga please!

        5 Vanishing Point Challenger

        6 I'll crack your back.

7 You know you two got some fuckin balls.

        “get/have some balls”是個俚語句子,意思是“有膽量”。

        8 Scratch that.

        Cars and Ads

        Cars and Computers

5 氣囊系統(tǒng)彈出前將詢問“Are you sure?”
