編者按：“沒有濕地也就沒有水！”濕地與人類的生存、繁衍及發(fā)展息息相關(guān)。中國濕地約占世界濕地面積的10%，是世界上濕地生物多樣性最豐富的國家之一。我國濕地資源還處于嚴(yán)重的威脅之中，主要是水資源不合理利用及農(nóng)業(yè)開墾，導(dǎo)致湖泊數(shù)量不斷減少，面積不斷萎縮。同時，濕地上游水土流失，導(dǎo)致河床、湖底淤積嚴(yán)重。

February 2 each year is World Wetlands Day. It marks1 the signing of the international Convention （公約） on Wetlands in Ramsar， Iran， on 2 February 1971. There are many definitions2 of wetlands， but put simply， wetlands are usually wet. The three criteria3 used to deter- mine a wetland are: the presence of wet soil， water in the form of flooding or saturation （飽和）， and vegetation（植被） or plants that grow in water.

World Wetlands Day has been celebrated since 1997 and provides an opportunity to draw attention to the need for wise management of the world's wetlands through a variety of events （活動） such as workshops （專題討論會） and seminars4， nature walks and guided tours， children's art contests and photographic（攝影的） competitions， community clean-ups， planting activities or other local initiatives（倡議）. The theme for World Wetlands Day 2005 is \"Cultural and Biological Diversity（多樣性） of Wetlands\".

Functions and Values of Wetlands

Flood and Storm Water Damage Protection Wetlands act like sponges （海綿）， slowing the slow of floods by temporarily storing flood and runoff（地表徑流） waters.

Water Purification （凈化） Pollutants （污染物） can be removed through absorption（吸收） by plants and soils.

Maintenance of Water Supply Wetlands can serve as groundwater recharging５ zones， improving the flow of streams.

Preservation of Wildlife Habitats Wetlands provide breeding， nesting（筑巢）， rearing6 and wintering habitats for many fish and wildlife species. These include endangered （瀕危的） species， such as whooping cranes （美洲鶴）， bald eagles （禿鷹） and wood storks （黑頭鹮鸛）. Wetlands provide breeding grounds for fish and shellfish （有殼的水生動物） and are home for many species of timber（樹木）， for wild rice and cran- berries（越橘）.

Climatic Influences Wetlands help control atmospheric pollution by removing excess nitrogen（氮） and carbon produced by humans.

Recreation and Natural Beauty Places for hunting and fishing， canoeing（乘獨(dú)木舟） and boating， nature study and photography and outdoor education are provided by wetlands.

每年的2月2日是世界濕地日。這是為了紀(jì)念1971年2月2日在伊朗拉姆薩爾簽訂的國際濕地公約。濕地有許多定義，但簡而言之，濕地總是潮濕的。判定濕地的3個標(biāo)準(zhǔn)是：存在潮濕的土壤；被淺水淹沒或處于水飽和狀態(tài)；水生的植被或植物。

世界濕地日的活動始自1997年，從而提供了一個機(jī)會，通過各種活動引起人們對全球濕地需要進(jìn)行科學(xué)管理這件事的重視。這些活動包括專題討論會和研討會，在大自然中漫步及有指導(dǎo)的旅游，兒童藝術(shù)比賽以及攝影競賽，社區(qū)清理，植樹活動或其他地區(qū)性的倡議。2005年世界濕地日的主題是“濕地的文化與生物多樣性”。

濕地的功能和價值

抵御洪水和暴雨的破壞 濕地起到類似海綿的作用，通過暫時儲蓄洪水和地表徑流，減緩洪水的流動速度。

凈化水質(zhì) 植物和土壤的吸收能去除污染物。

保持水供給 濕地能起到地下水再補(bǔ)充區(qū)域的作用，加大河流的流量。

保護(hù)野生生物棲息地 濕地能為許多魚類和野生生物提供繁殖、筑巢、養(yǎng)育和過冬的棲息地。這些動物包括一些瀕危物種，例如美洲鶴、禿鷹和黑頭鹮鸛。濕地為魚類和貝類提供了繁育地，也是多種樹木、野米(菰米)和越橘的家園。

影響氣候 濕地可以去除由人類制造出來的過量氮元素和碳元素物質(zhì)、從而有助于控制大氣污染。

娛樂和美化大自然 濕地可以為狩獵、垂釣、駕獨(dú)木舟或劃船、自然研究以及攝影，還有戶外教育等活動提供場所。
