There are wizards in our oceans. They don't look like the wizards that you know from Harry Potter movies，but they've got many of the same tricks. These wizards are octopuses.

Poisons Blue-ringed octopuses make one of the deadliest（最致命的） poisons in the world.The poison is in their saliva（唾液）， and they use it to paralyze （使癱瘓）struggling crabs（蟹）.The poison also makes a good defense against enemies.One blue-ringed octopus， smaller than your hand， has enough poison to kill many humans．

Magical moves Most octopuses are poor swimmers. They usually get around using their arms to crawl（爬，爬行） along the ocean bottom. However， they can squeeze through tiny holes as if they were moving from room to room through keyholes.Many octopuses can bury themselves in sand or mud. Some can even swim through the sand， sticking up an eye like a periscope（潛望鏡） every now and then to see if the coast is clear.

Baby wizard powersBaby octopuses nev- er know their parents.They emerge from their eggs smaller than a pea（豌豆） and have to surviveby their wits（頭腦，智力）and powers from the start. They are mainly see-through （透明的） but can already change color， squirt（噴，射） ink， and regrow lost body parts.

Masters of disguise（假扮，偽裝）No animal on Earth is better than the octopus at changing its ap- pearance. In a flash， an octopus can change color， make itself smooth， or sprout（長出） spikes（骨狀突出物）. Some use the changes for camouflage（偽裝）--perfectly matching and blending into their surroundings. Others put all the right bits together and take on the forms and colors of different species of fish. The octopus is the ultimate（極點的，絕頂?shù)模?impersonator （演員）！

Escape artistIf disguises don' t work， oc- topuses can disappear in a sort of smoke screen. A small squirt of concentrated ink squeezed out its backside forms a cloud that looks like under- water smoke. It confuses an attacker long enough for a quick escape.

Wand （魔杖） power The blanket octopus uses deadly \"wands\" to fend off attackers. It steals a couple of stinging tentacles (觸手) from a jellyfish (海蜇).Holding them in its upper arms， the octopus shows the tentacles to an approaching enemy， warning it to stay away.

Trick armsSome octopuses resort to（憑借）a very serious trick. They break off an arm and scoot （急速移動）away！ The arm keeps wriggling 扭動for hours，sometimes crawling all over an attacker and distracting（轉(zhuǎn)移，分散）it while the octopus gets away. The octopus grows a new arm out of the stump（殘肢）.

奇妙的腕足有些章魚會依靠一種非常極端的逃生方法。它們斷開一條腕足后迅速逃走!這條臃足能繼續(xù)扭動幾個小時，有時整個爬到攻擊者身上，分散它的注意力，而章魚則乘機逃走。章魚能從殘肢處長出一條新的腕足。

Disappearing actIf there' s no chance to squirt ink and scoot away (急走)，warn off an attacker， blend in to hide，or any of the other wizard tricks octopuses have up their arms，a handy clamshell （蛤殼） provides a good hiding place！

隱身之法如果章魚沒有機會噴射墨汁后逃走、嚇跑來犯者、混入周圍環(huán)境中藏身，或憑借它的腕足施展任何其他魔法，那么身邊的一個蛤殼就是很好的藏身之地。
