Editor'sNote:From November 8th,2024,China introduced a visa-free policy for Korean visitors; since then, Shanghai has become a top destination for many Koreans who are eager to explore China. We invited fiveKorean friendswhohavelived, traveled or worked in Shanghai to share their personal experiences of this vibrant city.

Recently, the trend of flying to Shanghai after work on Friday has been booming among young Koreans. As an office worker myself,I tried this style of travel last year, choosing Shanghai as my first stop in China due to its super convenient payment options and transportation. It is often dubbed “the easiest city in China for newcomers.\"

During my three day visit I strolled along the Bund, where history and modernity blend seamlessly, and wandered down Wukang Road, enjoying the unique charm of old Shanghai.I also visited the former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, reconnecting with history. Having originally thought that this trip would be focused on food and sightseeing, to my surprise the shopping scene was just as exciting. The many beauty stores, full of high-fashion products, really showed me Shanghai's fashion-forwardaspect.

The biggest surprise of my trip was that I unexpectedly made a new Chinese friend. Although we did not speak the same language, we had a great time chatting with the help of a translation app; he even warmly invited me to bring my family over on my next visit. At first, I was somewhat surprised; in Korea,we do notusually invitea friend's family to our home. However, Ilater realized that thisisacommon wayforChinesepeopleto expresstheir friendship. This cultural difference was both fascinating and fun,and it gave me a deeper appreciation of Chinese hospitality.

I first arrived in Shanghai in 201o to pursue my PhD at Fudan University; I was both excited and slightly nervous about this new chapter. Beforehand, I had often heard people say that the Shanghainese tend to keep their distance, but asI met more local people,I came to realize that this was merely a stereotype. My PhD supervisor both patiently guided me through my thesis revisions and also often invited me over for meals, making me feel the warmth of home even in a foreign country.

LeeYun-kyong (second from the right)was invited toattendShanghai'sNationalDayreception

After graduating with my PhD,I had to return to Korea for some months, but I faced the problem of having nowhere to store my luggage. When one of my Chinese colleagues heard about it, she immediately offered to store my things in her home and even welcomed me to stay for a few days when I returned. This kind of help, just when I needed it most, gave me a deeper appreciation of how Shanghainese people interact; whilst respecting boundaries, they are warm and dependable.

I have been living in Shanghai for some15 years now.Duringmy PhD studies, whenthe research pressure intensified,I would take a stroll around Lujiazui in Pudong. Looking up at the towering skyscraperswith clouds drifting across their glass facades always felt like a perfect blend of hustle and tranquility; it never failed to lift my spirits. Sometimes,I would escape to Sheshan or the Chenshan Botanical Garden in Songjiang, breathing in the fresh air and unwinding in nature. In my free time,I love visiting museums and art galleries, taking inexhibitionsfromalloverChinaandtheworld. The beauty of Shanghai is its rich and open cultural scene which means that you do not have to travel far to experience the bestof global culture.

Park Hye-young (teacher)

In August 2024, taking advantage of the summer break,my daughter and I embarked on a four-day trip to Shanghai. Thiscity, wherethecharmsof theEast andWestblendseamlessly, became the starting point of our wonderful memories in China.

On the first day, we walked from East Nanjing Road to the Bund, where the dazzling night view of theOrientalPearl Towerleftusinawe.Thesecond day, when we explored the Yuyuan Garden, was even more unforgettable;in the evening light, its classical architecture was even more enchanting, and we enjoyed delicious, authentic soup dumplings. On the third day,we visited the former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic ofKorea inShanghai.Although not very large, the exhibition hall's collection of precious historical manuscripts and photographs enabled me to fully appreciate the significance of its history. On our last day, we stepped into the fairytale world of Shanghai Disneyland; despite the scorching heat, the joyful atmosphere of the park meant that we forgot our exhaustion. My daughter said excitedly: “Mom,Shanghai is even more amazing than Iimagined!\"

Park Hye-young (right) with her daughter during their triptoShanghai

Our trip was filled with fun moments: in a hotpot restaurant, we saw staff bringing out giant plush toys toaccompanysolo diners, andwewereevenable to watch a noodle master perform a noodle dance right at the table. These small details made Shanghai’'s hospitality unique and entertaining.

Although our four-day trip was short,

Shanghai's stunning night views, convenient amenities, and warm hospitality left a deep impression on us; we genuinely experienced the city's unique charm, and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

        Kim Sung-hee (student)

In January 2024,as an exchange student from Busan University of Foreign Studies in Korea,I spent three enriching and unforgettable weeks studying in Shanghai. On my initial arrival, I felt slightlyanxious about the all-Chinese lectures, but the professors thoughtfully included images and English subtitles in their slides. This not only helped me to better understand the coursecontent, butalso allowed me to quickly adapt to the classroom environment.

In my free time,I loved riding hired bikes through the streets and alleyways, exploring the city's charm. The seamless connection between underground food courts and metro stations was a good demonstration of the convenience of Shanghai. As a food lover, I could not resist diving into authentic Chinese cuisine; compared to the Haidilao hotpot I had experienced in Korea, the broth in China was noticeably richer, and the unique strawberry matcha drink left a lasting impression on me.Ialso fellinlovewith supermarket mini steamed buns,Cantonese dim sum shrimp dumplings, and

Kim Sung-hee tasting Cantonese dim sum

        many other local treats.

Another thing which strongly impressed me was Shanghai's 24-hour delivery culture. When I stayed up late working on assignments, I only had to taponmy phone, and a late-nighthot snack would arrive promptly;as a night owl, this convenience made me feel truly happy. Although my three weeks in Shanghai went quickly, the city's delicious food and convenience are etched on my memory. Before leaving, I made sure to buy some butterfly pastry to bring back to Korea in order to share this taste of Shanghai with my friends.

Lee Seo-jeong (international student in Shanghai)

As an international student studying at the School of English at Shanghai International Studies University, I have found a surprising connection between Shanghai and my hometown, especially in the strong coffee culture. Every weekend, I enjoy visitinga café in Huangpu Districtwith my friends, holding a rich latte in one hand, looking out of the window. The Oriental Pearl Tower dazzles at night, with the shimmering reflections of cruise ships on the river, which is both romantic and captivating.

Shanghai’s culture of everything being available for delivery truly opened my eyes. Once, when I had a cold,I tried to order fever medicine through a delivery platform; to my surprise,it arrived at mydoorstepwithin halfan hour.Further, flowers, cakes, fresh fruit and vegetables, almost anything you can think of is available for delivery; this level of convenienceamazed even myKorean friends.

During my studies,I rode an electric bike daily to commute between the university and my apartment. In Korea, electric bikes are quite uncommon, but in Shanghai they have become an important part of daily life, being both time-saving and environmentally friendly.

In addition to my studies,I organized several China-Korea cultural exchange events with other Korean international students; one of the most memorable was the Hanbok experience event on Hongquan Road.During the event,Chinese and Koreanstudentsdressedintheirowntraditional costumes, taking photos and sharing the experience. The aroma of Korean barbeque mingled with the steam from the nearby Shanghai soup dumpling shop,as if telling the story of Shanghai's cultural inclusiveness. This event truly allowed me to understand the meaning of “embracing all rivers\"; while preserving its own unique characteristics, the city of Shanghai welcomes and integrates foreign cultures naturally to its fabric.
