

Dunhuang painted statues generally include the round and relief figures ofbodhisattva, heavenly kings, Buddhist warriors and other characters molded inniches, central pillars, ceilings, and walls inside and outside caves. Among them,the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and the Buddha’s disciples are the major figuresworshipped by Buddhists. Construction of those Dunhuang statues lasted formore than a thousand years. About 2,415 round statues have survived to this day,of which more than 1,400 are basically intact.
