In one San Francisco neighborhood, trouble appearedfor the newspaper delivery(遞送) man when his papersstarted going missing. He started getting calls from upsetcustomers that they hadn’t received their papers, but heknew full well he had sent one to each of their doors. Soon after the calls began, hediscovered something completely unexpected. He watched as the neighborhood coyote(郊狼) played with a newspaper on the side of a hill. He recorded herthrowing the paper in the air, going down to the side of the hill, and running aroundwith pages. It turns out she was stealing papers off certain doors again and again, just to play!

It’s common to hear about people running into conflicts(沖突) with coyotes inAmerica. Usually it’s because of fights with pets, or coyotes too close around peoplein parks or yards. But this time the conflict appears for a more surprising reason.

Rather than getting mad, the delivery man’s way to deal with it was to throw apaper just for her to the place where she usually goes before she had a chance to"steal one. She had her morning toy, and he stayed out of trouble with his customers.

I met the delivery man by chance early one morning while watching the coyote, and I listened to his story. To show me it was true—and do what he did everymorning—the delivery man threw a paper out on the grass. Sure enough, the coyotecame running down the hill to play with it.

San Francisco’s coyotes are only just now being studied, and a small populationliving in the Presidio has been under close watch. Many other cities also have newstudies of coyotes. As the clever animals become permanent residents of cities across the country, learning more about them is an important step in finding ways to coexist(共存) with them. For one newspaper man, at least, coexisting with themcomes at a low price: an extra copy of the daily newspaper.

        D. They’ve been seen a lot around the city.
