英語(yǔ)影視劇臺(tái)詞中，短語(yǔ)、短句占有很大的比重。短語(yǔ)、短句字?jǐn)?shù)少，上下文給出的提示有限，其中不少是習(xí)慣用法，如果再加上說(shuō)話者語(yǔ)速快、背景噪聲等因素，理解起來(lái)難度較大。

情景喜劇《老友記》（Friends）里的Joey是個(gè)還在為解決溫飽問(wèn)題而打拼的小演員，但女朋友倒是換得很勤。一天，在他經(jīng)常光顧的咖啡店里，他遇到了前女友。前女友Angela穿了一件漂亮的連衣裙，像換了一個(gè)人似的。

Joey： You look good.（今天你真漂亮啊。）

Angela： That’s because I’m wearing a dress that accents my boobs.（是因?yàn)槲掖┝艘患愿械娜棺樱夭匡@得更豐滿罷了。）

Joey： You don’t say.（噢，原來(lái)如此。）

僅憑字面，我們很難理解上面對(duì)話中的“You don’t say.”是什么意思。美國(guó)學(xué)者Richard A. Spears在Common American Phrases in Everyday Contexts一書(shū)中對(duì)這個(gè)短語(yǔ)給出的解釋是：Express a little polite surprise or interest but not disbelief.（有禮貌地表示驚訝或興趣，但沒(méi)有不相信的意思。）

短語(yǔ)for what it’s worth也不能從字面來(lái)“望文生義”：

For what it’s worth， your road trip sounds amazing. I just don’t think it’s gonna pan out for this summer.（我要給你一點(diǎn)忠告，你的旅行計(jì)劃聽(tīng)上去是蠻不錯(cuò)的。但今年夏天是否能付諸實(shí)施就很難說(shuō)了。）

——《絕望的主婦》（Desperate Housewives）

For what it is worth， I don’t think she did it.（依我看，作案的不是她。/ 我覺(jué)得不是她干的。）

——電視劇《本能》（Instinct）

For what it’s worth， I didn’t think it was a very good impression of you. （在我看來(lái)，你當(dāng)時(shí)給人的印象并不好。）

——《生活大爆炸》（The Big Bang Theory）

上面例子中，for what it’s worth是說(shuō)話人發(fā)表意見(jiàn)時(shí)一種客氣、謙虛的說(shuō)法，意思是：我只是說(shuō)一下我的看法，僅供參考。

影視劇臺(tái)詞中的短語(yǔ)、短句可大致分為以下幾類(lèi)：

一、約定俗成的短語(yǔ)或短句

這類(lèi)短語(yǔ)或短句在特定的場(chǎng)景中有具體、明確的意思，不能簡(jiǎn)單地按字面理解。

You decent？（我能進(jìn)來(lái)嗎？）［擔(dān)心對(duì)方?jīng)]穿好衣服］

——《無(wú)恥之徒》（Shameless）

Hang on， I’m not decent.（稍等，我還沒(méi)穿好衣服呢。）

——《極品老媽》（Mom）

Way to go， Tim?。ǖ倌?，你太厲害了！）

——《無(wú)罪證明》（Proven Innocent）

You have my word.（我向你保證。）

——《國(guó)務(wù)卿女士》（Madam Secretary）

A：A toast to Rory enter Chilton and an exciting new phase in her life.（我提議為羅里干杯，祝賀她考入奇爾頓高中，開(kāi)始一段新的精彩人生。）

B：Hear， hear.（說(shuō)得好，說(shuō)得好。）［這里hear表示贊同］

——《吉爾莫女孩》（Gilmore Girls）

Level with me， Bree. Do I still have a chance with you？（布里，請(qǐng)對(duì)我說(shuō)實(shí)話，我和你之間還有機(jī)會(huì)嗎？）

——《絕望的主婦》（Desperate Housewives）

For the record， I really do care about this.（說(shuō)實(shí)在的，這件事我的確很介意。）

It’s on me.（我請(qǐng)客。）

Fat chance of that happening.（那種事發(fā)生的機(jī)會(huì)很小。）［= It’s a fat chance of that happening.］

Fair enough.（你說(shuō)的有道理。）［= It’s fair enough.］

——電視劇《本能》（Instinct）

Noted.（知道了。）

——《妙女神探》（Rizzoli & Isles）

No strenuous activities， no meat， no booze.（不要做劇烈運(yùn)動(dòng)，不要吃肉，不要喝酒。）

——《我為喜劇狂》（30 Rock）

Perfect on the first shot.（第一次做，就做得這么好。）

——《急診室的故事》（ER）

Not rocket science.（這事簡(jiǎn)單。/這又不是什么很難的事。）

三、祈使句

Don’t sell yourself short.（別小瞧自己了。/別把自己賤賣(mài)了。）

前些年，在日本教授英語(yǔ)的Shawn Holley和Marilyn Holley夫婦專(zhuān)門(mén)寫(xiě)過(guò)一本《日常英語(yǔ)微型短句1660例》，這本暢銷(xiāo)書(shū)在國(guó)內(nèi)由清華大學(xué)出版社出版。無(wú)獨(dú)有偶，美國(guó)西北大學(xué)教授、詞典學(xué)家Richard A. Spears針對(duì)英語(yǔ)不是母語(yǔ)的學(xué)習(xí)者也編過(guò)一本Common American Phrases in Everyday Contexts。他特別強(qiáng)調(diào)，他編的這本書(shū)不是用來(lái)查的，而是用來(lái)熟讀、背誦的。該書(shū)收錄短語(yǔ)和短句2100條。信手翻檢該書(shū)，發(fā)現(xiàn)影視劇里的常用語(yǔ)“My lips are sealed.（我會(huì)守口如瓶的。）”和“（It’s） my way or the highway.（按我的意思干，否則滾蛋?。钡榷荚谄渲?。和該書(shū)的內(nèi)容相比，影視劇中，短句更豐富，慣用語(yǔ)也更多。對(duì)于英語(yǔ)不是母語(yǔ)的人而言，如果不事先了解、掌握一定數(shù)量的短語(yǔ)和短句，理解影視劇臺(tái)詞的程度會(huì)大打折扣。為此，平時(shí)收集、整理影視劇中出現(xiàn)的短語(yǔ)、短句，體會(huì)它們的適用場(chǎng)合和含義，是提高英語(yǔ)影視劇聽(tīng)力的有效途徑。
