William Hogh 游余
It’s all white.
I sat inside and looked out thewindow. The only color that broke thewhite line was James and the other kidsfrom school. They were up on the hill infront of the school and just 400 metersaway. The hill was the highest in town.Every kid went there on winter days. Thatincluded1 James.
James was my best friend. We bothwent to the 4th Grade at the same school.James was out there and waved2 at me. Ijust wanted to jump out the window andrun up the hill. But I was grounded3.
I was not allowed4 to go outside myhouse. And the word“house”didn’t meana lot. I lived in a “house”or maybe anant’s house. It was very small. Thereweren’t any toys, snacks or story books.
I did not even have my own room. I onlyhad an old bed and a curtain5 was the onlything that could give me some privacy6. So, Ijust sat and looked out the window.
The snow looked tempting7. All thekids were having so much fun. I could heartheir happy crying and see the smiles ontheir faces.
And then I couldn’t help it anymore.I took the chance and jumped out thewindow. And there I was, outside in mypajamas and too long socks, on the firstwinter’s day of the whole year. Ishivered8. It was so cold. I just wanted togo inside, again.
But my mother would not be happy ifshe found out that I had been out. Afterall, it was me and James who broke thewindow that got me grounded. I was goingto be so sick, but it was worth9 it. I had agreat time with James. And when I cameinside, Mum was sitting in the chair andlooked mad.
She asked me where I had been. Ididn’t tell the truth. I said I had been inmy room the whole time. She asked howthat was possible10 because she just heardme coming through the door.
So I got grounded for another weekwith snow outside, just waiting for me. ButI didn’t jump out the window this time. Ifelt really bored then. And out of nowheremy mom shouted.
“Sebastian, James is here.”
“Tell him I’m grounded,”I shoutedback.
“Well,heiscomingupnow,”Momsaid.
James came in the door with a smileon his face.
“What are you doing here?”I askedwith surprise. I thought he was playingwith other kids.
“Well, I got you grounded in the firstplace,”he answered with a bigger smile.“So I’m sleeping here this week.”That isto say, I could play with James inthe house.
“You’re the best,James,” I said happily.“And so areyou, Mum.”
