One night Peter received a call from his social worker asking, “Can you take in an 11-year-old boy just for the weekend?” It was just a few days after he had said goodbye to two brothers he was fostering (收養(yǎng)). He told the social worker that he was deeply sad for the loss of the two boys that had just been reunited with their birth parents. Peter thought he didn’t have enough energy left to care for another child at the moment. But the worker convinced him.

The social worker arrived at Peter’s home with the boy at 3:00 am after driving four hours from another county (縣). There are few foster families in Oklahoma, so when a child enters the foster care system, it’s difficult for social workers to place him or her. Those older children, in fact, are much more difficult to place.

Peter decided to ask why Anthony, the boy, was in foster care. Then he knew that the boy was abandoned by his mother when he was 2. He was then placed with a family. But almost ten years later, the same family abandoned him at the hospital. Peter was shocked, “It’s like my life!”

The two have been together ever since. And on the 12th of November, Anthony finally got to share Peter’s last name officially. However, Peter didn’t stop fostering kids. “It’s hard to be a single foster dad but it’s worth every minute of it. We are about to have another child next month and we are excited.”

        24. What word can best describe Peter according to Paragraph 1?

        A. Kind.????????????????????????? B. Rich.?????????????????????????? C. Busy.????????????????????????? D. Serious.

        25. When did the social worker leave for Peter’s home with the boy?

        A. In the morning.????????? B. In the afternoon.??????? C. At night.???????????????????? D. At noon.

        26. What can we infer from Peter’s words in Paragraph 3?

        A. He needed a brother.???????????????????????????????????????? B. He disliked the boy.

        C. He worked at the hospital.??????????????????????????????? D. He also had a terrible childhood.

        27. What will Peter do a month later?

        A. Take in another child.??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? B. Find Anthony’s birth parents.

        C. Help more children go to school.????????????? ???????? D. Take Anthony to visit the social worker.

        C

Do you have a younger brother? Does he always get in trouble? Well, there might be some science behind that.

According to a report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, second-born boys are more likely than firstborns to behave badly, which could be why you from time to time consider your younger brothers or sisters .

Researchers, who explored data from tens of thousands of sibling (兄弟姐妹) pairs from Denmark and Florida, found second-born boys are 20% to 40% more likely to have behavioral problems. If you’re the second-born child, you may want to have a little chat with your parents. The reason why second-born siblings may be worse behaved than firstborns is that parents tend to pay less attention to them.

“Second-born children tend to have less attention from the mother than their older siblings because first-born children experience their mother’s maternity leaves. First-borns enjoy the rewards of not only their own time with Mom following their birth, but the time Mom takes off with younger siblings, too,” the authors explain.

It’s not just about the parents, however. Co-author Joseph Doyle said, “The first-born has role models, who are adults. And the second, later-born children have role models who are slightly unreasonable 2-year-olds, you know, their older siblings. The difference of parental investments (投入) and the sibling influences probably contribute to these differences we see in the labor market and what we find in behaviors against regulations, even against laws. It’s just very difficult to separate those two things because they happen at the same time.” The results, the authors argue, have an important effect on social policy (政策).

        28. What does the underlined word “sprites” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

        A. Losers.?????????????????????? B. Troublemakers.?????????? C. Close playmates.??????? D. Parents’ pets.

        29. According to the report, what influences the second-born children’s behavior?

        A. Challenges of their older siblings.???????????????????? B. Fewer chances of talking with others.

        C. More family problems they face.?????????????????????? D. The amount of attention from parents.

        30. What does Doyle think of the older siblings?

        A. They have different role models.????????????????????? B. They are good examples of the younger ones.

        C. They affect the parental investments.??????????????? D. They contribute to the younger ones’ problems.

        31. What can be the best title for the text?

        A. Parents Prefer First-born Kids

        B. Social Policy Guides Family Education

        C. How Parents Improve Family Relationships

        D. Why the Second-born Tend to Be Misbehaved

        D

It is often said that you can’t have too many friends. But it seems that there is a natural limit (限制) to the number of people we stay in touch with. A study found that when we make new friends, by starting a new job or going to university, we downgrade or even drop old ones. And while the friends may change, the number stays almost the same.

Oxford University researcher Felix Reed-Tsochas asked 24 students in the final months of school to list all their friends and relatives and say how close to them they were. The pupils filled in the questionnaire twice more after starting work or going to university. They were also given free mobile phones and agreed that researchers could use their bills to work out who they called, when and for how long.

Putting the two pieces of information together showed, unsurprisingly that most people have a small circle of close friends, who they spend most of their time talking to. This inner circle is surrounded by group after group of ever more distant friends. As the volunteers’ lives changed, this overall pattern, including the number of best friends, remained almost the same, meaning that some close friends from childhood were dropped or downgraded as new friendships were built.

Dr Reed-Tsochas said, “Maybe my best friend is no longer the same person but the amount of time I allocate (分配) to my best friend is still the same.” He added that this finding suggests that even with the coming of modern technology we are only capable of forming a limited number of true friendships.

Chester University researcher Dr Sam Roberts said, “Our results are likely to reflect limitations in the ability of humans to keep emotionally close relationships both because of limited time and because the emotional capital (情緒資本) that individuals can allocate between family members and friends is limited.”

        32. What does the first sentence of the text suggest?

        A. Having too many friends is not necessary.??????? B. We should make a limited number of friends.

        C. The more friends we make, the better.????????????? D. We can have many different friends.

        33. What did Reed-Tsochas do to the volunteers in his study according to Paragraph 2?

        A. Check their call records.??????????????????????????????????? B. Learn about their hobbies.

        C. Track their job performance.???;?????????????????????????? D. Interview their schoolmates.

        34. What did the researchers find from their study?

        A. People value friendships a lot.?????????????????????????? B. People dislike dropping their old friends.

        C. One’s attitude to friendship remains the same. D. The number of one’s best friends seldom changes.

        35. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?

        A. To add background information.????????????????????? B. To give a possible explanation.

        C. To offer some suggestions.??????????????????????????????? D. To introduce a new topic.

I experienced years of loneliness as a child. His friends laughed at him about babysitting his sister and his interests were far different from mine. With no other kids of my age in the neighborhood, I had to spend hours by myself.

A bright spot for me turned out to be reading. My love of the written word began early as my mother read to me every evening. I started reading books on my own before age 5 and my mother took me to the public library once a week to borrow several books. I quickly graduated from typical children’s books to ones with fewer pictures and longer chapters. Reading opened new worlds to me.

My mother also encouraged me to make what I wanted. I tried making toy cars with cardboard boxes and constructing buildings from leftover cardboard and bits of wood my father gave me. When my mother saw my creations, she told me how creative my designs were. I learned a lot about how to extend the life of objects and transform them into something new and useful. It was a trait (特點(diǎn)) others found helpful, and I soon had friends who wanted to make things with me.

My parents made it a point for their two kids to spend time outside, no matter the weather or season. My brother, of course, raced off to be with his friends, while I had plenty to do myself. There was making leaf houses in autumn, ice skating in winter, and so much more. They’re all memories I treasure today.

        A. I wasn’t alone any longer.

        B. I enjoyed reading stories aloud.

        C. I was invited to play with another kid.

        D. I loved the colorful photographs in the books.

        E. My older brother was unwilling to play with me.

        F. Another habit I formed early was being outdoors.

        G. Thus, I began my lifelong interest in making things.
