1 If there is a single theme throughout the history ofscience and technology in China， it is self?improvement.Chinese scientist Gu Songfen， who won Chinas top scienceaward， is a modern model of the self?taught man.

2 Born in 1930， Gu is an aircraft designer at the Aviation（ 航天） Industry Corporation of China， Ltd.， the countrysleading aircraft maker. At the age of 21， he joined Chinasaviation industry when it was in its early development.

3 In 1956， Chinas first aircraft design office was esta?blished in Shenyang， Liaoning Province， and its first task was to develop the countrys firsthomegrown jet aircraft. Gu was appointed head of the aerodynamics （空氣動(dòng)力學(xué)） team.

4 In the 1950s， China had no aviation experience， equipment or wind tunnels. Gudecided to teach himself. He visited the library at Beihang University every day to searchfor all the information he needed. Based on that information， Gu came up with anaerodynamic design system and on July 26， 1958， after two years of development， his teamcelebrated the maiden flight of Chinas first training jet.

5 Gu went on to work on the development of the J?8， the countrys first supersonic jetfighter， which made its first test flight in 1969 but encountered serious problems duringflights. Without a camera， Gu glued knitting wool to the J?8s rear fuselage （機(jī)身） and tailwing to observe their flow during flight in person. To get a clear view of the way the woolwas disturbed， he required two planes to fly just five meters apart， which was a greatrisk for him and his pilot. After several flights， he finally found and fixed the problem.

6 In 1980， he was in charge of the design of J?8Ⅱ， which was required to perform at amuch higher level than previous aircraft. In four years， Gus team achieved the first flight ofthe J?8Ⅱ， laying the cornerstone（基石）for Chinas supersonic aircraft design.

7 Gus endless curiosity drove his spirit of lifelong learning. He continued his scientificinquiries， translated foreign books， talked with young scholars， and even learned Russian，Japanese and German late in life.
