Women, the important figure in science field, are missing

        Katie

32-year-old, live in New York science podcast host

I've been writing about science and technologyfor decades, most of that time for The New York Times, but very rarely did I write about a woman who was amajor figure. I don't remember it bothering me verymuch at the time. It just seemed normal.

I believed I was writing about the most importantpeople in their fields, but it became clear, as my careerwent on, that important figures were missing, namelywomen. I started asking why. This was a couple ofyears ago, and I kept coming back to something calledthe Matilda Effect, which is basically a bias againstacknowledging women for their work in science.Instead, the credit goes to a man. A good exampleI saw in the news recently is Jocelyn Bell Burnell. She's a radio astronomer who discovered the first twopulsars, but the Nobel prize went to a man. If we don'tcatch these misattributions, these women can just fadeaway from our consciousness, and we'll never knowthe truth about their story and about our history.

We should spend more money on science

        Angus

22-year-old, live in Edinburgh graduate student in computer science

I don't think that all people realize just howimportant science is. By learning about our universethrough science, we can better solve problems that weface today and may face in the future. Through sciencewe have transformed the lives of billions of peoplearound the world.

Quantum physics has allowed us to buildtransistors. There are billions of them in the deviceyou're reading this on, and on every other device outthere. It's helped revolutionize our society like no othertechnology before it, and it all starts with science. Butwhen those scientists of the 1920's and 30's were firstformulating Quantum Theory, they couldn't see thepractical applications of it. And there lies the moral ofthe story.

I don't think we, as a society, do enough infunding scientific endeavors. People complainthat money should be spent on doing things withpractical applications, instead of on scientists in somelaboratory. But what they don't realize is that someof the most important technological advances wehave made come from scientific theories from thosescientists.

So if we want to build a better world for ourselves,we need to spend more, not less, money on science.
