六是商業(yè)革命
歷代封建王朝統(tǒng)治者都奉行“重農(nóng)抑商”的國(guó)策。特別是在城市,實(shí)行坊市分隔制度。作為居民區(qū)的“坊”與作為商業(yè)貿(mào)易中心的“市”是分區(qū)而設(shè)的,不允許有交點(diǎn)。城市以大街為界,劃分為若干個(gè)坊、市, 每個(gè)坊、市的四周像現(xiàn)代監(jiān)獄一樣高墻環(huán)繞,組成一個(gè)個(gè)封閉的單元。四面設(shè)門,定時(shí)啟閉,稽察出入。為了便于管理, 政府規(guī)定居民不得在坊內(nèi)開(kāi)設(shè)店鋪,不能臨街開(kāi)店。城市的商業(yè)貿(mào)易和經(jīng)濟(jì)活動(dòng)都限制在市內(nèi)進(jìn)行,并規(guī)定入市交易的時(shí)間僅限于白天, 日落而息,夜晚除朝廷特許的情況外,禁絕一切商業(yè)活動(dòng)。然而,在宋代,由于社會(huì)生產(chǎn)力水平的提高,尤其是商品經(jīng)濟(jì)的發(fā)展明顯超過(guò)前代,使人們的經(jīng)濟(jì)觀念呈現(xiàn)出轉(zhuǎn)折時(shí)期的鮮明特征。士大夫?qū)鹘y(tǒng)的“農(nóng)本工商末”的觀點(diǎn)進(jìn)行了有力的批判。如以天下為己任的范仲淹發(fā)出了“吾商則何罪?君子恥為鄰”的呼喊,對(duì)社會(huì)上抑商、輕商的觀念進(jìn)行了強(qiáng)烈的譴責(zé);而南宋時(shí)的陳耆卿以及以葉適、陳亮為代表的浙東功利主義學(xué)派更是旗幟鮮明地認(rèn)為工商業(yè)是“本業(yè)”。正是在這種社會(huì)氛圍下,商人的社會(huì)地位有了明顯的提高,可以合法的身份參加科舉考試,躋身于仕宦行列,從而使社會(huì)上出現(xiàn)了全民皆商的新風(fēng)尚。
在這一時(shí)期,統(tǒng)治者順應(yīng)歷史潮流,確立了“農(nóng)商并重”的國(guó)策,采取惠商、恤商的政策措施。自此,社會(huì)各階層紛紛從事商業(yè)經(jīng)營(yíng),商品經(jīng)濟(jì)呈現(xiàn)出劃時(shí)代的發(fā)展變化,開(kāi)創(chuàng)了古代中國(guó)商品經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展的新時(shí)代。正是由于宋代出現(xiàn)了從農(nóng)業(yè)文明向工商業(yè)文明的轉(zhuǎn)型,有西方學(xué)者普遍認(rèn)為宋代正處在“經(jīng)濟(jì)革命時(shí)代”,這在當(dāng)時(shí)的商業(yè)上體現(xiàn)得更加突出。如在城市里,統(tǒng)治者允許居民臨街開(kāi)設(shè)店鋪,徹底廢除了歷代王朝特別是唐代奉行的封閉式的坊市制度,而代之以住宅和店肆相混合的坊市合一形式,商業(yè)交易的時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)等完全由商人自己選擇,城市格局從此由封閉轉(zhuǎn)向開(kāi)放,從唐代政治型城市轉(zhuǎn)變?yōu)樯虡I(yè)型城市。正如李劍農(nóng)指出的:“市坊分區(qū)制度打破,隨處可見(jiàn)小賣行販,交易不限于市區(qū),臨街之處,隨處見(jiàn)商店、酒樓、瓦子勾欄,時(shí)間限制亦不復(fù)存在?!鄙唐飞a(chǎn)擴(kuò)大、商品流通活躍、市場(chǎng)關(guān)系擴(kuò)大及其影響加強(qiáng)、商人資本崛起、貨幣制度飛躍等,以致有人認(rèn)為宋代出現(xiàn)了“商業(yè)革命”或“城市革命”。傅筑夫《有關(guān)資本主義萌芽的幾個(gè)問(wèn)題》就認(rèn)為:“宋代的商品生產(chǎn)遠(yuǎn)較十四、十五世紀(jì)地中海沿岸城市發(fā)達(dá),因而宋代是中國(guó)資本主義萌芽的主要產(chǎn)生時(shí)期?!泵绹?guó)學(xué)者斯塔夫里阿諾斯《全球通史:從史前史到21世紀(jì)》說(shuō):“宋朝時(shí)期值得注意的是,發(fā)生了一場(chǎng)名副其實(shí)的商業(yè)革命?!?jīng)濟(jì)活動(dòng)的迅速發(fā)展還增加了貿(mào)易量。中國(guó)首次出現(xiàn)了主要以商業(yè)而不是以行政為中心的大城市?!辟M(fèi)正清《中國(guó):傳統(tǒng)與變革》則認(rèn)為:“宋朝經(jīng)濟(jì)的大發(fā)展,特別是商業(yè)方面的發(fā)展,或許可以恰當(dāng)?shù)胤Q之為中國(guó)的‘商業(yè)革命。這一迅速發(fā)展使中國(guó)經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展水平顯然高于以前,并產(chǎn)生出直至19世紀(jì)在許多方面保持不變的經(jīng)濟(jì)和社會(huì)模式?!比毡緷h學(xué)家內(nèi)藤湖南甚至據(jù)此認(rèn)定宋代為中國(guó)近世的開(kāi)端,日本東洋史學(xué)家宮崎市定認(rèn)為宋代已經(jīng)進(jìn)入商業(yè)時(shí)代。日本著名宋史漢學(xué)專家斯波義信《宋代江南經(jīng)濟(jì)史研究》一書更是認(rèn)為,宋代是一個(gè)產(chǎn)生交通革命、農(nóng)業(yè)革命、商業(yè)革命和都市革命的時(shí)代,發(fā)端于宋代的諸種變革成為后世變革的原型,將其列為“9-13世紀(jì)發(fā)生在中國(guó)的商業(yè)革命、城市革命的頗具代表性的一個(gè)范例”。美國(guó)加州學(xué)派的貢德·弗蘭克《白銀資本:重視經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化中的東方》對(duì)宋代的經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展水平給予較高的評(píng)價(jià),認(rèn)為自宋代以來(lái)的中國(guó)經(jīng)濟(jì)在工業(yè)化、商業(yè)化、貨幣化和城市化等方面遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)超過(guò)當(dāng)時(shí)世界的其他所有地區(qū)。
在這場(chǎng)轟轟烈烈的城市革命中,北宋京城東京(今河南開(kāi)封)和南宋都城臨安(今杭州)極其活躍,在都市化快速發(fā)展的過(guò)程中扮演了極其重要的角色。北宋京城東京街巷縱橫交錯(cuò), 酒樓、茶肆、邸店、飯店、歌館、瓦子、客棧等店鋪沿街設(shè)立,一應(yīng)俱全,鱗次櫛比, 商品琳瑯滿目,水陸交通繁忙,車馬喧鬧,人流如潮,可謂是“八荒爭(zhēng)湊,萬(wàn)國(guó)咸通,集四海之珍奇,皆歸市易”。城內(nèi)“大貨行”或“小貨行”多達(dá)160多行,入行商戶高達(dá)6400余家。臨安同樣是世界上最繁華、最發(fā)達(dá)的商業(yè)大都市,且其商業(yè)市場(chǎng)的發(fā)展水平超過(guò)了唐都長(zhǎng)安和北宋都城開(kāi)封。據(jù)時(shí)人記載,臨安有414行,每行大約數(shù)十至百戶。這比宋敏求《長(zhǎng)安志》卷八所載唐代長(zhǎng)安“市內(nèi)貨財(cái)二百二十行”,足足增加了近一倍。這里自大街及各個(gè)坊巷,大小鋪席連門俱是,沒(méi)有一間虛空的房屋,可以說(shuō)沒(méi)有一家不做買賣的。僅御街中段有店名可考的大店就達(dá)120余家。長(zhǎng)達(dá)數(shù)千米的御街,形成了多個(gè)商業(yè)中心。自大內(nèi)和寧門外,新路南北,早間珠玉珍異及花果時(shí)新、海鮮、野味、奇器、天下所無(wú)的物品全部集中在這里,舉凡蘇州的絲綢、溫州的漆器,從福建和廣東經(jīng)海路運(yùn)來(lái)的沉香、龍腦、胡椒、茉莉花盆景等,南昌的折扇,以及國(guó)內(nèi)所產(chǎn)的名酒等,琳瑯滿目,應(yīng)有盡有,可謂“萬(wàn)物所聚”。在此濃厚的商業(yè)氛圍下,城中涌現(xiàn)出了一大批知名度較高、具有特色的店鋪。人們追求名牌產(chǎn)品,買物多趨這些知名的店家。這一方面是認(rèn)為名牌商品的質(zhì)量好、口碑佳,能夠得到好的享受;另一方面,或許是市民愛(ài)面子的虛榮心在作怪。
除都城外,宋代眾多的商業(yè)城市和海外貿(mào)易城市也發(fā)展起來(lái),出現(xiàn)了洛陽(yáng)、建康(今江蘇南京)、蘇州、鎮(zhèn)江、揚(yáng)州、成都、鄂州(今湖北武漢武昌)、廣州、泉州、明州(今浙江寧波)等50多個(gè)10萬(wàn)戶以上的全國(guó)性著名商業(yè)大都市,比唐代多了40個(gè)左右。在此基礎(chǔ)上,北宋首創(chuàng)在縣以下的經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)達(dá)或人煙稠密的鄉(xiāng)村地區(qū),以及水陸碼頭和交通孔道沿線設(shè)立鎮(zhèn)市,成為商賈交易之所,從而涌現(xiàn)出一大批草市、墟市等定期集市和商業(yè)集鎮(zhèn),形成了“中心城市——市鎮(zhèn)集市——邊境貿(mào)易——海外市場(chǎng)”的通達(dá)商業(yè)網(wǎng)絡(luò)。
商品化程度較高,不僅有白天開(kāi)市的日市,而且還出現(xiàn)了早市、夜市、季節(jié)市、專業(yè)市等不同類型的市場(chǎng)。專業(yè)市場(chǎng)有米市、菜市、茶市、肉市、珠子市、藥市、花市、布市、生帛市、蟋蟀市、象牙玳瑁市、絲綿市、枕冠市、故衣市、衣絹市、卦市等。如在成都,月月都有專業(yè)市場(chǎng)舉行,這便是中國(guó)歷史上知名的“成都十二月市”。據(jù)趙抃《成都古今集記》載,宋代成都月月有市:“正月燈市,二月花市,三月蠶市,四月錦市,五月扇市,六月香市,七月七寶市,八月桂市,九月藥市,十月酒市,十一月梅市,十二月桃符市。”
不僅城內(nèi)如此,城外郊區(qū)同樣如此。城郊出現(xiàn)了許多商業(yè)繁盛的鎮(zhèn)市,據(jù)《都城紀(jì)勝》所講,南宋臨安“城之南、西、北三處,數(shù)十里人煙生聚,市井坊陌,數(shù)日經(jīng)行不盡,各可比外路一小小州郡”。商品琳瑯滿目,不僅品種齊全,而且品類繁多。這些商品既有本地所產(chǎn)的,也有來(lái)自海內(nèi)外的。
市場(chǎng)體系突破了舊有限制,單個(gè)的城市市場(chǎng)內(nèi)部,城市與城市之間都形成了有層次的市場(chǎng)體系,特別是南宋都城臨安,形成了完善的有層次的市場(chǎng)體系。市場(chǎng)批發(fā)活動(dòng)極為活躍,其批發(fā)業(yè)務(wù)的水平達(dá)到了中國(guó)歷史上的最高水平。首先,表現(xiàn)在出現(xiàn)了以行老為首的批發(fā)機(jī)構(gòu),批發(fā)商通過(guò)團(tuán)行將同業(yè)零售商組織起來(lái),形成了一個(gè)完整的、有機(jī)的、細(xì)密的批零銷售網(wǎng)絡(luò)。這在《夢(mèng)粱錄》卷一六所載的肉鋪、鲞鋪、米鋪中可以清晰地看到。鲞團(tuán)先統(tǒng)一招邀溫、臺(tái)、四明等地的鲞商,集中于臨安城南的渾水閘,然后再分銷給城內(nèi)外一二百余家鲞鋪及叫賣小販,從而使鲞魚迅速進(jìn)入到城市的消費(fèi)市場(chǎng)。肉市上的豬肉產(chǎn)品,已經(jīng)達(dá)到了精細(xì)化的程度。為了滿足居民的不同需求,鋪戶們將豬肉按部位和質(zhì)量等進(jìn)行分類,分為肉、骨及內(nèi)臟三大類,三大類中再細(xì)分為眾多的小類。鋪戶利用他們的專業(yè)知識(shí),將其制作成熟肉產(chǎn)品,使豬肉的利潤(rùn)最大化。毫無(wú)疑義,豬肉產(chǎn)品的精細(xì)化,一方面提高了產(chǎn)品的附加值,另一方面也有利于豬肉的銷售,方便市民食用。其他水產(chǎn)品、食米的批發(fā)業(yè)務(wù)與銷售渠道,較之肉類更為細(xì)致完備。
店鋪的營(yíng)業(yè)時(shí)間,除了白天營(yíng)業(yè)外,還有夜市和早市。買賣晝夜不絕,直到晚上三四鼓,游人才開(kāi)始稀少;但五鼓鐘鳴后,賣早市的人又開(kāi)店了,可謂是通宵達(dá)旦。夜市徹底打破了小農(nóng)經(jīng)濟(jì)“日出而作,日落而息”的生活模式,它給宋人帶來(lái)了全新的生活?!稏|京夢(mèng)華錄》載: “夜市直至三更盡,才五更又復(fù)開(kāi)張。如要鬧去處,通曉不絕,冬月雖大風(fēng)雪陰雨,亦有夜市?!蹦纤闻R安同樣如此,大詩(shī)人陸游有詩(shī)描述說(shuō):“隨計(jì)當(dāng)時(shí)入帝城,笙歌燈火夜連明?!?/p>
商人們?yōu)榱嗽诩ち业纳虡I(yè)競(jìng)爭(zhēng)中求得生存和發(fā)展,十分注意服務(wù)的內(nèi)容和質(zhì)量,服務(wù)細(xì)致周到。以服務(wù)的內(nèi)容而言,只要顧客需要,商家都能提供,這在服務(wù)性行業(yè)中得到了充分的體現(xiàn)。如有富人家中養(yǎng)馬,則每天有人定時(shí)供應(yīng)草料;養(yǎng)狗,則供應(yīng)狗食;養(yǎng)貓,則供應(yīng)活的小魚小鰍;養(yǎng)魚,則供應(yīng)小魚小蝦。租賃行業(yè)同樣如此,據(jù)《武林舊事》卷六《賃物》所載,凡婚慶、喪葬之類的宴請(qǐng),自有所謂的茶廚子專任飲食請(qǐng)客宴席之事。凡酒席上需要的物品,只要通過(guò)租賃,一點(diǎn)都不用主家費(fèi)心費(fèi)力。即使主家大辦宴席,亦可馬上承辦。而一些著名的大店鋪,不僅經(jīng)營(yíng)品種繁多,而且注重經(jīng)營(yíng)品種隨季節(jié)而不斷變換。為了吸引顧客,在晚間常請(qǐng)藝人在里面講史或小說(shuō)。誠(chéng)實(shí)可信成為社會(huì)的主流,曾有阿拉伯商人說(shuō)中國(guó)人在金錢交易和債務(wù)方面都非常有信用。
為了招攬生意,商家們?cè)跔I(yíng)銷的方法上也是大招迭出。當(dāng)今盛行的美女營(yíng)銷、廣告營(yíng)銷等,在宋代就非常流行了。以美女營(yíng)銷來(lái)說(shuō),以坐店作樂(lè)賣酒更成為一種時(shí)尚的作法,幾乎所有的官營(yíng)酒店,都插滿彩旗、紅旆,里面坐有數(shù)十濃妝艷抹的女子,想方設(shè)法推銷酒水。風(fēng)流才子們欲買一笑,則徑往酒店里點(diǎn)花牌,惟意所擇。笙歌之聲晝夜不絕。為了招攬生意,各個(gè)店鋪還注重進(jìn)行廣告宣傳。如北宋濟(jì)南有家劉氏鋼針店鋪,其產(chǎn)品自產(chǎn)自銷,頗負(fù)盛名。當(dāng)時(shí),這家店鋪以“白兔兒”作為其產(chǎn)品的商標(biāo),這是目前世界上已發(fā)現(xiàn)的最早的專用商標(biāo)。這個(gè)商標(biāo)用銅版印刷,近似方形,中間繪有白兔搗藥圖,畫像鮮明突出,其畫上端橫寫著店名“濟(jì)南劉家功夫針?shù)仭?。為了表明生產(chǎn)者,兩側(cè)并印有廣告文字:“認(rèn)門前兔兒為記。”同時(shí)寫有其店鋪的經(jīng)營(yíng)范圍、方法、質(zhì)量等要求的文字告白,文曰:“收買上等鋼條,造功夫細(xì)針,不誤宅院使用;客為轉(zhuǎn)販,別有加饒,清白記?!?/p>
知識(shí)產(chǎn)品也已經(jīng)商品化,并在一定范圍內(nèi)建立了知識(shí)產(chǎn)權(quán)保護(hù)制度。當(dāng)時(shí)的地方政府曾專門發(fā)布過(guò)版權(quán)保護(hù)的公告。知識(shí)產(chǎn)品的創(chuàng)作者和經(jīng)營(yíng)者已經(jīng)有非常明晰而成熟的知識(shí)產(chǎn)權(quán)保護(hù)意識(shí),出版的很多圖書已經(jīng)出現(xiàn)了相當(dāng)于今天版權(quán)頁(yè)的“牌記”,上面記載著該書的出版人、刻書人、出版日期等信息。這種版權(quán)保護(hù)申明與1952年簽署的《世界版權(quán)公約》所要求的“版權(quán)標(biāo)記”十分相似,“已申上司,不許復(fù)板”的表述與現(xiàn)在的“版權(quán)所有,侵權(quán)必究”幾無(wú)差別。
服務(wù)業(yè)還出現(xiàn)了專門的職業(yè)裝。如南宋臨安城中,士、農(nóng)、工、商諸行百戶,其服裝均有等級(jí)規(guī)定。香鋪人頂帽披背子,質(zhì)庫(kù)掌事裹巾著皂衫角帶。街市上買賣的商人,也各有服色頭巾,各可辨認(rèn)出他們從事什么職業(yè)。
工商業(yè)者有了自己的組織——行會(huì)。兩宋都城開(kāi)封和臨安是當(dāng)時(shí)行業(yè)組織最發(fā)達(dá)的地區(qū),其中僅《西湖老人繁勝錄》諸行市條就載有175種行名。其中,經(jīng)營(yíng)各種貿(mào)易的商人團(tuán)體有:銀行、銷金行、方梳行、冠子行、紗絹行、處布行、麻布行、帽行、茶行、魚行、果子行、花行、竹行、雞行、籮行、書籍行、紗市、谷市、川廣生藥市、象牙玳瑁市、絲綿市、生帛市、枕冠市、故衣市、衣絹市、花朵市、肉市、米市以及花團(tuán)、青果團(tuán)、柑子團(tuán)、鲞團(tuán)等。
宋代商業(yè)的繁榮使貨幣和信用關(guān)系獲得空前的發(fā)展。北宋中期,在成都富商聯(lián)合發(fā)行的信用交換基礎(chǔ)下,官府發(fā)行了世界上最早的初步具有信用貨幣性質(zhì)的紙幣——“交子”,它標(biāo)志著實(shí)物經(jīng)濟(jì)的終結(jié)和貨幣經(jīng)濟(jì)的開(kāi)始,在世界金融史和文明史上占有特殊的地位。此時(shí)西歐國(guó)家使用的仍是金元、銀元等貴金屬貨幣,西方最早的紙幣英格蘭銀行券,晚于兩宋紙幣六七百年才出現(xiàn)。不久,這種紙幣在河?xùn)|、京西、京東諸路迅速流通開(kāi)來(lái)。大約到北宋末年,首都開(kāi)封出現(xiàn)了寄附錢物會(huì)子,并且“諸色人多將京城內(nèi)私下寄附錢物會(huì)子之類出城及于外處行使”。至紹興五年(1135),便錢會(huì)子已在臨安市場(chǎng)上確立了自己的權(quán)威——信用,從而使其由一種地方性流通的紙幣一躍而成為全國(guó)性流通的紙幣。
對(duì)外貿(mào)易高度發(fā)達(dá),海外貿(mào)易盛況空前,出口、消費(fèi)和投資一起成為宋代經(jīng)濟(jì)繁榮的“三駕馬車”。宋朝統(tǒng)治者為了增加國(guó)家的財(cái)政收入,積極開(kāi)展海上貿(mào)易,與其建立外貿(mào)聯(lián)系的國(guó)家和地區(qū)達(dá)60多個(gè),海外貿(mào)易竟占GDP的15%-20%,這在中國(guó)封建社會(huì)歷史上是空前絕后的。東南沿海地區(qū)特別是以兩浙為中心的長(zhǎng)江三角洲地區(qū),外向型市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì)崛起,從事外貿(mào)的中外商人群體約有十萬(wàn)之眾。其海外貿(mào)易范圍大為拓展,迎來(lái)了一個(gè)海洋貿(mào)易的時(shí)代。除傳統(tǒng)的東亞朝鮮、日本外,已從南洋(今南海)、西洋(今印度洋)沿岸擴(kuò)大至波斯灣、地中海和非洲東海岸諸阿拉伯國(guó)家,最終整合成為一個(gè)聯(lián)系緊密的國(guó)際市場(chǎng)體系,遂與西亞阿拉伯帝國(guó)構(gòu)成當(dāng)時(shí)世界貿(mào)易圈的兩大軸心,雄踞于太平洋西岸和印度洋地區(qū)。進(jìn)出口商品主要是“金銀、緡線、鉛、錫、雜色帛、瓷器、香藥、犀(角)象(牙)、珊瑚、琥珀、珠琲、鑌鐵”等。而絲綢與陶瓷外銷量最大,因此海上貿(mào)易又被稱為“海上絲綢之路”“海上陶瓷之路”。宋代每年所鑄的數(shù)百萬(wàn)貫銅錢,亦因之流向周邊國(guó)家或地區(qū),幾乎成為“國(guó)際貨幣”。
財(cái)政稅收收入世界第一。據(jù)《通典》卷六記載,唐代天寶中(742—756)每年的財(cái)政稅收收入約為200萬(wàn)貫,而北宋初期則達(dá)1600萬(wàn)貫,神宗熙寧時(shí)期( 1067—1085)和高宗紹興二十七年( 1157)為6000萬(wàn)貫,淳熙十四年(1187) 達(dá)8000萬(wàn)貫。事實(shí)上,據(jù)學(xué)者研究,宋朝年財(cái)政收入最高年份曾達(dá)到12000萬(wàn)貫,即使是失去了半壁江山的南宋,常年財(cái)政收入也是高達(dá)10000 萬(wàn)貫。此后的元、明、清三代,顯然無(wú)法與宋朝相比肩。(待續(xù))

Commercial Revolution
Rulers before the Song dynasty (960-1279) generally despised merchants and preferred polices that encouraged agriculture over trade and business. A Fang-Shi System was even put in place, in urban areas in particularly. Under the system, a number of residential areas (Fang) were set up, each enclosed with its own walls and separated from markets (Shi), which in turn had their own walls. In other words, every residential area and every market are each essentially a unit onto its own. To facilitate the management of residents, the government further stipulated that all business and trade activities be carried out only in Shi, only during daytime, and that residents not allowed to open shops in any Fang.
With marked increase in productivity and a booming commodity economy, things were about to change in the Song dynasty. To begin with, perceptions about merchants, trade and businesses became much more favorable. “What crimes have merchants committed that those junzi (gentlemen) are ashamed of being their neighbors?” asked Fan Zhongyan (989-1052), a prominent Song poet and statesman. Indeed, some scholar-officials even considered business and trade, rather than agriculture, as the “pillar” of the country. The status of merchants was thus much improved and they could also take the Imperial Examinations and become officials.
Accordingly, Song rulers put agriculture and commerce on equal footing, and adopted a raft of preferential policies for merchants and their businesses. Over time, the Fang-Shi System was also scrapped. Residential areas and markets were no longer separate and shop owners were able to determine their business time freely, stimulating economic activity and raising output. A money economy gradually emerged. Fu Zhufu, an economic historian from China, believed that commodity production during the Song period far outstripped those of the Mediterranean cities in the 14th and 15th centuries. “The Sung [Song] period is noteworthy for a commercial revolution…The volume of trade also rose with the quickening tempo of economic activity. For the first time there appeared in China large cities that were primarily commercial rather than administrative centers,” observed historian L. S. Stavrianos in his influential book A Global History: From Prehistory to the 21st Century. John K. Fairbank, one of the foremost Sinologists, also believed Songs tremendous economic development, especially in commerce, could be aptly called Chinas commercial revolution. The Japanese historian and Sinologist Naito Konan even went so far as to claim Song was the starting point of Chinas modern era.
In this commercial revolution, particularly notable are the two cities Dongjing (literally “East Capital”, present-day Kaifeng city in Henan province), capital city of the Northern Song (960-1127), and Linan (present day Hangzhou), capital city of the Southern Song (1127 1279). Both played a crucial role during Songs rapid urbanization. In Kaifeng, taverns, tea houses, storage stores, inns, restaurants, and various shops lined the street, offering a wide range of goods and services. Water and land transportation teemed with people and merchandises coming from all over the country and all around the world. Large and small industrial organizations reached over 160, joined by more than 6,400 businesses. The development of Linan not only surpassed its Tang (618-907) predecessor Changan (present-day Xian city, Shaanxi province) by a great deal, but also outshined Kaifeng. While Changan had 220 industrial organizations of various kinds, records dating from Southern Song show that Linan boasted 414, each with businesses numbering dozens to over a hundred. Indeed, from high street to main street, from thoroughfare to back alleys, not one single house was empty and not doing some business of one sort or another.
Apart from the capital cities, a host of commercial and trading cities were born during the Song dynasty. Over 50 (40 more than in Tang) major urban and commercial centers, including Luoyang, Jiankang (present-day Nanjing city, Jiangsu province), Suzhou, Zhenjiang, Mingzhou (present-day Ningbo city, Zhejiang province), had a population of more than 100,000 households. It was also in the Northern Song that the policy of setting up market towns in economically developed and more densely populated rural areas, as well as along major water and overland transport routes, was first instituted. A sophisticated business network of “center cities—market towns—border trading—overseas market” came into shape.
By now, highly developed commercial activities meant that daytime markets were not the only ones available. In urban centers as well as suburb areas, a variety of markets, including morning markets, night markets, seasonal flower markets and specialized markets, were opened. For instance, there were rice market, vegetable market, tea market, meat market, bead market, medicine market, flower market, cloth market, raw silk market, cricket market, ivory hawksbill market, silk wool market…and a host of other specialized markets. In Chengdu city, Southwest Chinas Sichuan province, a specialized market would be featured every month during the Song period. Known as the “Chengdu Markets of 12 Months”, it was described thus: “l(fā)antern market in January, flower market in February, silkworm market in March, brocade market in April, fan market in May, incense market in June, jewelry market in July, osmanthus market in August, medicine market in September, wine market in October, plum market in November, and charms market in December.”
To survive and develop in this highly competitive environment, Song businessmen attached great importance to the services they provided, and they were reputed for being trustworthy. Many marketing gimmicks that we see today had already been widely practiced during the Song dynasty. For example, taverns would employ prostitutes as models to sell alcohol. Advertising was also used to court customers. A shop that sold needles even designed a trademark named “Bai Tuer” (or White Rabbit), believed to be the earliest known trademark in the world.
The economic boom in the Song resulted in unprecedented development in its money economy. In the 11th century, Song issued the worlds first paper currency called “Jiaozi”, a kind of promissory note based on its advanced credit system. In comparison, the earliest banknotes in the West only appeared in England about 600 to 700 years later. Songs economic development was boosted by foreign trade as well, which accounted for 15%-20% of the GDP, a feat unsurpassed by any dynasty. Over 60 countries and regions established trade relations with the Song, and with high volumes of trade, Song coins became the de facto “international currency” for many of them.
Growing consumption and trade meant more tax revenues, which already reached 16 million taels of silver in the early period of the Song dynasty; during the Tianbao era (742-756), generally considered the high point of Tang dynasty, the figure stood at 2 million. Research shows Song tax revenues climbed to as high as 120 million later and even in the Southern Song, when it lost half of its territories, the figure often stayed at around 100 million.
