Literary and art works complimentary to women are abundant in the long history of Chinese civilization. Many of the most memorable phrases in the language were coined by poets describing beautiful ladies， who were also the subjects of many great paintings. But most of their footprints across history are similar descriptions or images under an almost unified aesthetic standard of the times.

However， many ancient Chinese women were also talented， witty， and intellectual. During the millennia when men controlled the gates to the wealth of knowledge， many women still left many works of poetry， calligraphy， and craft that convey a clear and unique feminine perspective and wisdom.
