Fran and Karen are cousins and best friends. They both have black eyes， but they look completely different. Fran is blonde and tall， while Karen is petite （嬌小的） and has brown hair.

Fran always says Karen is lucky because she can walk to school. Fran has to take the bus on rainy days. Karen carries her umbrella， while Fran just wears a raincoat. Neither of the girls likes rain， but they both love snowy winters.

In the morning the girls meet in the lunchroom to chat. They talk about what their families did the night before. Karen's family prefers TV， but sometimes her mom or dad reads aloud to the family.
