The majority of my foreign friends are staying in China, however, a few have left to their home countries. However, in my personal opinion, traveling exposes you to more danger than staying at home. Further, because some infected people may have few symptoms, if you travel home, you may bring the virus with you to your home country. Taking these factors together, I believe it is safer and more considerate to others to stay in place for the time being.
In my opinion the best thing a foreign citizen can do to ensure their own safety is to follow the government advice and stay indoors as much as possible. When going out, be sure to wear a mask and avoid others. Wash hands frequently, and cook all food.
The Chinese government is doing a good job, releasing several English-language announcements of key guidelines. However, each work unit should make sure to help keep foreign experts up-to-date, since they may not know where to look for information, and may have a smaller WeChat network to share information compared to their Chinese colleagues.
I am thankful for all of the selfless efforts of viral researchers, doctors, and other key personnel putting their health at risk to help everyone stay safe and healthy. I am also glad that the society as a whole is taking the outbreak very seriously, and patiently waiting for the situation to improve and quarantining themselves indoors as much as possible. Surely this is the best way to combat this epidemic.
I hope that all scientists worldwide with expertise to contribute will actively help China to fight this war. I hope all governments and people would join in solidarity with China during this period.
While I have heard of some of my acquaintances doing excellent work in helping .For example, Mr.Li Xiaoqiang, from Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University shared some pictures on his WeChat showing that not only is he working hard at the hospital in Chongqing, but after his shift is over, he even donated blood. However, I also truly believe that an epidemic such as this can only be fought by the whole society working together as one. I am amazed to see the solidarity and singular purpose of the Chinese people during this difficult time, and am sure that their struggle and sacrifice will be repaid by a swift end to the 2019 novel coronavirus!
