OxFord Dictionaries picks“toxic”as Word of theYear

Oxford Dictionaries announced that it has chosen“toxic" as its annual Word of the Year， Britishmedia reported Friday.

Defining the word as“poisonous"， Oxford said it had become a“descriptor for the year's mosttalked about topics"， citing the adjective's use to describe everything from the debate around Brexitto the environment and masculinity.

The dictionary pointed to a 45 percent rise in the number of times the word has been looked upon its website， and said it best captured“the ethos， mood， or preoccupations" of 2018， thanks to“thesheer scope" of its application.

Toxic has defeated other shortlisted words， such as the derogatory term“gammon"， to becomethe Word of the Year， according to the dictionary.

Oxford Dictionaries said that the“Me Too”movement has“put the spotlight on toxic masculinity"whereas in politics more broadly“the word has been applied to the rhetoric， policies， agendas andlegacies of leaders and governments around the globe' .

Oxford's Word of the Year is intended to“reflect the passing year in language”. In 2017， itsWord of the Year was“youthquake"， defined as“a significant cultural， political， or social changearising from the actions or influence of young people”.

《牛津詞典》稱，“我也是”運動“將公眾的注意力集中在了有毒的男子氣概上”，而在更廣泛的政治領(lǐng)域，“這個詞被用來形容某些領(lǐng)導人和政府的花言巧語、政策、議題和政治遺產(chǎn)”。

牛津年度詞匯旨在“用語言反映過去的一年”。在2017年，它的年度詞匯是“青年地震”，定義是“由年輕人的行為或影響弓引起的重大文化、政治或社會變革”。
