As an important component of the Village Opera project produced in conjunction with the late Christoph Schlingensief, the Centre for Health and Social Welfare is geared towards providing basic health and medical resources for the local population in Laongo and the surrounding areas. The centre consists of three units organised around a central waiting area: dentistry, gynecology and obstetrics, and general medicine. The facility is rendered with examination rooms, inpatient wards, and staff offices. Special consideration is taken for visitors and family of patients with several shaded courtyards for gathering and waiting.
The playful fenestration design emerged from the varying vantage points of standing, seated,or bedridden individuals including children. The windows are composed like picture frames, with each individual view focused on a unique part of the landscape.
In keeping with the material aesthetic and ecology of the Village Opera, local clay and laterite stone where used in the double-envelope construction of the walls for extra rain protection.Locally available eucalyptus wood, seen as an environmental nuisance as it contributes to desertification, is used to line the suspended ceilings and covered walkways of the centre.

Comments
SONG Yehao:The building has a feature that it could blend in the local environment while maintain its unique style. The integration into the local environment is closely related to the material it used. There is no discord with the environment, whether it is the material, the colour or the texture. And in term of its unique style, the enclosed surface and the deliberately random fenestration - which serves as frames - are very impressive. It is obviously that the enclosed surface is a climate-adapting method, which contributes to a more comfortable microclimate. Since the enclosed form is chosen, the design focuses on how to introduce natural light into the interior and how to organise various views. Therefore, the seemingly random holes are created to provide better views from the interior, with different sights for various heights and framings. In fact, when looking out from the inside, each window opening reveals a small fragment of the natural environment and all the fragments fit together into a work of modern art. (Translated by QI Yiyi)

ZHANG Yufeng:The playful windows contain enriched interpretation spaces: the left-right and up-down flexible arrangement of windows provides a variety of possibilities for indoor daylighting as well as meeting the various types of visual needs; the scattered small windows all have their own shadings, in which the outer frame combines the horizontal and vertical shadings, and the inner switch can further reduce the entry of sunlight heat; as a vent, the concave frame design guides and promotes airflow, and forms effective ventilation paths together with the cool courtyard and sloping roof. It is a key design clue and characteristic to provide an economically feasible design scheme for low-income people to adapt to the local tropical climate on the premise of respecting local ecology and culture.
