Pulping1 manufacturers and outdated paper-making factories in three cities and one district around Dongting Lake in Hunan Province will be removed by the end of 2018， while all paper mills2 will be closed by the end of 2019， reports Chinese state media Xinhua.

Often referred to as the“kidney of the Yangtze River”， the 2，820 sq km lake acts as a natural reservoir3 and helps to regulate the flow of the worlds third-longest river. It is also boasts a rich biodiversity4， including being home to Chinas endangered finless porpoise5.

About 18，000 people from the lakeside cities of Changde， Yiyang and Yueyang are employed in the local paper industry， but authorities6 state that they will not only help laid-off employees7 find new jobs but also transform the paper-making enterprises.

Chinas Hunan Provincial Bureau of Water Resources revealed that the lakes area has expanded almost 30 percent over the past 40 years due to local authorities returning farmland and relocating residents to make room for improved flood control capabilities.

中國湖南省水利局透露，由于地方當局退耕還林，重新安置居民，為提高蓄洪能力騰出空間，過去40年來，湖區(qū)面積擴大了近30%。
