        ·FromDrawingtoMapping:theEvolutionofMapsinModernLocalChroniclesWangHui(4)

Abstract: Modern local chronicles surpass ancient local chronicles not only in the guiding ideology and the concepts of chronicling, but also in the compilation approach. Maps are an integral part of local chronicles. Despite the fact that the maps in local chronicles may not represent the highest level of contemporary maps, those in local chronicles compiled in modern times, a period deeply affected by Western learning, are more diverse and practical in content. They were mapped by professionals, and, with the addition of mathematical elements, reflect the new ideas and concepts of that era.

        ·AProbeintotheFinancialIssuesinthePublicationofModernLocalChroniclesHePeidong(14)

Abstract: Many financial issues are involved in the publication of local chronicles. It can be found by collating and analysing relevant materials in modern local chronicles that: government funding, tax revenue, official and civilian donations were the main sources of funds for the publication of modern local chronicles, while the chroniclers also raised money through many other means; printing fees and payments for the chroniclers constituted two major expenditures in the publication process, generally with the printing fees accounting for a larger proportion; more often than not, the pricing of local chronicles in modern times was much lower than their cost, mainly based on the cost of printing; some places tried investing what was left over from the funds for chronicling and the income from book selling, and earmarking the interests for future chronicling. However, most of the balance was used for local public welfare undertakings such as science and education.

Abstract: The 19th National Congress of the CPC has established the new historical orientation for China's development and ushered in a new era for the socialism with Chinese characteristics. The new era has brought new environment, unprecedented challenges and great opportunities to the development of local chronicles. More importantly, it endows the development of local chronicles with a new historical mission. Local chroniclers should strengthen cultural consciousness, adapt to the new environment, work on new problems, develop new achievements and make new contributions. As the inevitable outcome of the development of local chronicles in the new era, major events chronicles are essential to building cultural self-confidence in the new era. How to properly compile major events chronicles is a subject that needs to be studied in research and summarized in practice.

During his mission in Shanghai, Brancati was involved in numerous activities, including building churches and chapels, establishing congregations, preaching in Chongming, presiding over the funeral ceremony of Xu Guangqi combining Chinese and Western characteristics, and actively associating with local Chinese scholar-bureaucrats, contributing greatly to the widely spreading of Catholicism in Shanghai. Abstract: Hongkou is one of the few places in central Shanghai that still retains a complete water system, represented by Yujingpu and Shajinggang. However, with the historical changes and the city development, nowadays almost no one can tell exactly what the rivers flowing through the neighbourhood looked like in the past, or describe the historical sites and landscape along the banks of these rivers in the old days. Fortunately, local chronicles have preserved a record of their past, thus people today can solve the mysteries of their past by referring to the chronicles.

Abstract: Qian Weishan, a reputed scholar in the late Yuan Dynasty, once sojourned in Huating, Songjiang. His works did not have a chance to be handed down to this day except Collection of Songjiang Life. The book was compiled by himself in his prime years, and doesn’t include descriptions of his life, thoughts and creation in the 40 years afterwards. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, more than 10 collectors made great efforts to compile Qian Weishan's poems and essays, with substantial outcomes. The supplement has great value in studying Qian Weishan, the socializing and creations of the communities he belonged to, Shanghai's position in the development of Jiangnan culture, and even the interrelation between local chronicles and collections, as well as the methods of collecting and editing scattered documents.
