1 ache

熟義：vi.痛，疼痛

生義：vi.（1）為…感到難過，同情 （to feel sympathy or compassion）

如：His heart ached for the starving animals.他為那些挨餓的動(dòng)物們感到痛心。（2）渴望（to yearn or long）

如：The refugees were aching for their homeland.難民們渴望回到家鄉(xiāng)。

2 adequate

熟義：adj.充足的，足夠的

生義：adj.（1）適當(dāng)?shù)?，勝任的（good enough, of a quality that is good or acceptable）

如：They are adequate for almost any computing need.他們可以滿足幾乎所有的計(jì)算需要。

The old methods weren’t adequate to meet current needs.老方法滿足不了現(xiàn)在的需要。

（2）勉強(qiáng)的，差強(qiáng)人意的（of a quality that is acceptable but not better than acceptable）

如：Her first performance was merely adequate.她第一次的表演只能說差強(qiáng)人意。

Your grades are adequate but I think you can do better.你的成績還可以的，但我想你能做得更好。

3 alone

熟義：adv.單獨(dú)地，一個(gè)人地

熟義：adv.僅僅，只有（indicating that something is confined to the specified subject or recipient）

如：More than 35,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in the US alone in 2015.2015年，僅美國就有超過35 000人在交通事故中喪生。

4 bathe

熟義：v.洗澡

生義：v.（1）沐?。╟overed with light, especially a gentle, pleasant light）

如：The lamp behind him seems to bathe him in warmth.他身后的燈在他身上投下溫暖的光。

The trees are bathed in moonlight.月光籠罩著整個(gè)樹林。（2）沉浸（to become immersed or absorbed）

如：bathe in music 沉浸在音樂之中

如：Sally took a both on that stock that she bought.Its price went down to nothing.莎莎在她買的那只股票上遭受了巨大的經(jīng)濟(jì)損失，它的價(jià)格已經(jīng)跌到不值什么錢了。

5 contribute

熟義：v.（1）做貢獻(xiàn)

（2）捐款，捐助

如：They say they would like to contribute more to charity, but money is tight this year.他們說他們很愿意多捐一些錢給慈善機(jī)構(gòu)，但是今年他們的資金有些緊張。

生義：v.（1）投稿（to supply something, such as an article for a publication）

如：He contributed several poems to the magazine.他投了幾篇詩稿給那份雜志。

（2）是…的原因之一（If something contributes to an event or situation, it is one of the causes of it.）

如：Drink contributed to the accident.飲酒是這次事故的原因之一。

The report says design faults in both the vessels contributed to the tragedy.報(bào)告說兩艘船在設(shè)計(jì)上的缺陷也是導(dǎo)致這個(gè)悲劇的原因之一。

（3）（在討論中）發(fā)言（give one’s views in a discussion）

如：He did not contribute to the meetings.他在這些會(huì)議上沒有發(fā)言。

6 lose

熟義：失敗，失去

生義：（1）（鐘、表等）走得慢（of a timepiece, go slowly）

如：Please hurry! My watch loses 10 minutes.快點(diǎn)。我的表慢了10分鐘。（2）看不見，聽不見，理解不了（to fail to hear, see, or understand）

如：We lost the plane in the fog.大霧中，我們看不見飛機(jī)了。

I lost her when she started speaking about thermodynamics.當(dāng)她開始講熱力學(xué)的時(shí)候，我就聽不懂了。

7 mean

熟義：v.有…意圖；打算

生義：adj.（1）不友好的（lacking in kindness; unkind）

如：The teacher was not being mean in asking you to be quiet.老師讓你安靜一點(diǎn)并沒有惡意。

（2）卑鄙的、刻薄的（cruel, spiteful, or malicious）

（3）惡狠狠的（expressing spite or malice）

如：He gave me a mean look.他惡狠狠地看了我一眼。

（4）吝嗇的；小氣的（not willing to give or share things）

如：It’s mean of you to eat up all the apples.你將所有的蘋果都吃了是很小氣的。

8 mend

熟義：v.修理，修補(bǔ)，縫補(bǔ)（to repair）

生義：v.（1）改進(jìn)（to improve or undergo improvement；reform）如：He was advised to mend his ways.他被建議改進(jìn)方法。

（2）（身體）恢復(fù)健康（to heal or recover）

如：I'm feeling a good bit better.The cut aches, but it's mending.我感覺好多了，傷口還疼，但在愈合。

（3）（狀況的）改善；好轉(zhuǎn)（of conditions,to improve; become better）

如：Things are mending.情況正在好轉(zhuǎn)。

（4）使（火）變旺（to feed or stira fire）

如：mend a fire by adding fuel 加點(diǎn)燃料讓火旺起來

9 occasion

熟義：n.場合

生義：n.（1）重大活動(dòng)，隆重場合（a special event or ceremony, such as birthdays, anniversaries, and other specialoccasions）

如：The party was quite an occasion.那個(gè)聚會(huì)真的很隆重。

（2）機(jī)會(huì)，時(shí)機(jī)（a favorable opportunity or circumstance）

如：Our company did not have occasion to talk with them.我們公司沒有機(jī)會(huì)和他們談。

10 pale

熟義：adj.蒼白的

生義：adj.軟弱的，無力的；不重要的；較差的（to seem weaker or less important）

如：a pale protest 無力的抗議
