The museum’s transformation captures the art and heritage of the automobile in American culture. The appeal of the car – style and speed – inspires the museum’s exterior, expressed in color and movement.
Emulating the body of a car mounted to its frame, steel “ribbons” envelop a red, corrugated aluminum screen that attaches to the museum’s existing structural system. Seemingly random, the strategically placed, undulating ribbons evoke a sense of motion and symbolize the slipstream effect of light trailing a rapidly moving object. Their curvature, both enfolding the building and cascading over it, is the marvel of collaboration between KPF and A. Zahner Company, an acclaimed engineering and fabrication firm.
Zahner’s patented technologies brought the museum’s ambitious design to life, requiring detail and precision at every stage of development. Assisted by a full-scale, design mockup, several rounds of testing addressed various construction and design related issues, including the development of the facade’s stainless steel armatures and selecting the ideal red to paint the aluminum surface. The team also calculated the steel’s 45-degree-angle transition from vertical facade to horizontal roof to implement a canopy to support community gathering and provide shade in the hot weather.
The stainless steel ribbons, which feature enlarged fasteners, are tumbled and softened to catch nondirectional light, are painted red on their interiors to produce a luminous and ethereal effect.
