Gorillaz are a virtual band that consists of four fictional animated band members： 2-D （Vocals/Keys）， Murdoc Niccals （Bass Guitar）， Russel Hobbs （Drum/Percussion） and Noodle （Lead Guitar）. These members are fictional and are not personas of any “real life” musicians involved in the project. Their fictional universe is explored through the bands music videos， as well as a number of other short cartoons.

Unlike other fictional bands whose music has had real-life success， they are neither a parody of a particular genre （Spinal Tap， A Mighty Wind） nor marketed to young children （The Archies）， and their actual musical output is far more of an attraction to most of their fans than their existence as cartoon characters. Their music is often a collaboration between various musicians.Musical icons like Snoop Dogg， Lou Reed， Shaun Ryder and Mos Def are among the acts to have collaborated on Gorillaz tracks.

The bands first album， 2001s Gorillaz， sold over 3 million copies and earned them an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. Their second studio album， Demon Days， was released in 2005 and included many hit singles. Demon Days went Double Platinum in the US， Triple Platinum in the UK， and earned 5 Grammy award nominations for 2005. The bands third studio album， Plastic Beach， was released in March 2010. Their fourth album The Fall was released in December 2010 as a free download for fan club members， then in April 2011 as a physical release. After a five-year hiatus， Gorillaz announced their fifth studio album， which was released last year. Gorillaz have been nominated for ten Brit Awards and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards.

The band was created by Damon Albarn from the Britpop band Blur， and Jamie Hewlett， the co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. They had been friends for several years but came up with the idea for the cartoon group when watching MTV after moving into a flat together. They were disillusioned with the lack of connection that many pop groups had with the creative side of their music， and were finding the music videos they were watching increasingly lacking in substance. So they decided to push things the other way： they created a band so manufactured that the lines between fiction and reality became blurred. They created Gorillaz. In addition， he and Jamie have also collaborated on the BBC promotional film during the Beijing Olympics， as well as the previous musical “Journey to the West”， where Damon is responsible for music and Jamie is responsible for animation design.

In reality， Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor， and the 50-year-old musician has maintained a high degree of creative enthusiasm for last decades. He walks around the world and takes his inspiration from different magnificent cultures， and convey them through his unique musical perspective. He loves music， opposes war， and devotes to break cultural barriers by the power of music， just as he said at the Brits awards， “... Its a lovely place and its part of a beautiful world. What I want to say is dont let it become isolated； dont let us become cut off. ”
