be supposed to是一個(gè)固定搭配，意為“應(yīng)該；理應(yīng)；被期望”，其中的be有人稱、數(shù)和時(shí)態(tài)等變化，to是動(dòng)詞不定式符號(hào)，后面接動(dòng)詞原形。關(guān)于be supposed to的常見用法，我們做如下歸納：

一、句子的主語是指人的詞

當(dāng)句子的主語是指人的詞時(shí)，be supposed to意為“應(yīng)該做某事；被期望做某事”，多用來表示勸告、建議、義務(wù)、責(zé)任等，相當(dāng)于should。例如：

He is supposed to get there on time.他應(yīng)該按時(shí)到那里。

In this country,people are supposed to shake hands when they meet for the first time.在這個(gè)國家，人們第一次見面時(shí)應(yīng)該握手。

Since you are the leader,you are supposed to take the lead.既然你是領(lǐng)導(dǎo)，你就應(yīng)該起帶頭作用。

二、句子的主語是指物的詞

當(dāng)句子的主語是指物的詞時(shí)，be supposed to意為“本該；本應(yīng)”，多用來表示某事情本應(yīng)該發(fā)生而沒有發(fā)生。例如：

The meeting was supposed to take place on Thursday,but we have to put it off.這場會(huì)議本應(yīng)該在星期四舉行，但是我們不得不把它推遲了。

The train was supposed to arrive at 9:30,but it was 20 minutes late.火車本應(yīng)在九點(diǎn)半到達(dá)，但它晚了20分鐘。

三、be supposed to的否定形式

be supposed to的否定形式是be not supposed to，相當(dāng)于should not或be not allowed to，意為“不應(yīng)該，不準(zhǔn)，不得”。例如：

You are not supposed to smoke in public.It’s bad for our health.你不應(yīng)該在公共場所抽煙。它對(duì)我們的健康有害。

Though your mother mistakes you sometimes,you are not supposed to talk back to her.即使有時(shí)候你的媽媽誤會(huì)了你，你也不應(yīng)該頂撞她。

四、be supposed to的疑問形式

be supposed to的疑問形式是將be動(dòng)詞提到主語之前。例如：

Is she supposed to arrive at the airport at three in the afternoon?她應(yīng)該在下午三點(diǎn)到達(dá)機(jī)場嗎？

What are you supposed to do in class?在課堂上你應(yīng)該做什么？

五、be supposed to的其他含義

be supposed to還可以表示“一般認(rèn)為；據(jù)說”等含義。例如：

Her brother is supposed to be very clever.人們認(rèn)為她的哥哥非常聰明。

Let's go and see that movie.It is supposed to be very good.我們一起去看那部電影吧。據(jù)說它非常好看。

【拓展】

be supposed to have done sth.表示“本應(yīng)該做某事但沒做”。例如：

He is supposed to have arrived an hour ago.他本應(yīng)該在一個(gè)小時(shí)前就到。

You're supposed to have handed in your homework.你本該把作業(yè)交上來了。

【注意】

be supposed to是一種被動(dòng)形式，其主動(dòng)形式通常為“suppose...to be+形容詞 /名詞”，意為“認(rèn)為某人/某事……”。例如：

We suppose Linda to be an excellent nurse.我們認(rèn)為琳達(dá)是一位優(yōu)秀的護(hù)士。
