Dialogues between the Inheritor and Disseminator of Chongqing Liu Acupuncture and Moxibustion and the Mayan Doctor in Mexico

On October 20, the “Dialogue Forum of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Mexican Mayan Medicine”undertaken by Chinese-Mexican Trade Chamber of Mexico Yucatan, jointly hosted by the Mexico International Mayan Cultural Festival Organizing Committee and the Yucatán State Government of Mexico, was held in the 21st Century Exhibition Center, Merida, Yucatán, Mexico.

Liu Guangrui, Associate Researcher of TCM(traditional Chinese medicine), a national-level representative inheritor of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Project “Liu Acupuncture and Moxibustion Therapy” and Doctor Edgar Peraz from Mexican Mayan Protection Association have attended the forum.

This forum is a special dialogue between two kinds of medicine. It began with the introduction to the Mayan medicine and TCM respectively delivered by the Mayan Doctor Edgar Peraz and Liu Guangrui,Associate Researcher of TCM. They have also discussed the relations between TCM and Mayan medicine in the cultural, geographical and ethnic aspects; then the similar and different grounds of Chinese and Mayan medicine, how TCM can be integrated with Mayan medicine, as well as the future development direction and research direction of traditional Chinese medicine and Mayan medicine haven been explored. This forum has well interpreted the profoundness of TCM culture and Mayan medicine. Mr. Liu Guangrui has answered many problems concerning the treatment pathology of TCM put forward by the TCM amateurs from Mexico on the scene.

In the dialogue forum, Mr. Liu Guangrui has said that there are many similarities between the traditional Chinese medicine and Mayan medicine,for example, khan steam, exsanguinating,incantation, Mayan calendar are similar to 24-solarterms, the changes of TCM and the Eight Diagrams,etc. in TCM. There are thousands kinds of herbs close to Chinese herbal medicines, such as anesthetic herbs, painkiller herbs, anti-in fl ammatory bactericides herbs, etc. Research and clinical trials have proved that the Mayan herbs above are completely and conditionally able to be developed into Chinese herbal medicines. The integration of TCM with Mayan medicine can provide better treatment options and healthier and more economical medicines for Chinese and Mexican patients. It is hoped that the two governments will attach importance to the protection and development of TCM and Mayan medicine.

In addition, a three-day exhibition of traditional Chinese medicine has been held and Chinese medicine clinics service for local people in Mexico has been provided in the area. In particular, Yucatan Chinese School in Mexico, one unit of Mexican-Chinese Chinese-Mexican Trade Chamber of Mexico Yucatan has opened four-day tradition health-care classes of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) to provide training and TCM healthrelated knowledge for TCM amateurs in Yucatán,Mexico, and practitioners. Trainees were full of praise for TCM health care culture and the teaching of Mr. Liu Guangrui at the end of the course, and they both gave thumbs up and extended their thanks for holding these activities. One of the trainees said gratefully that he was directly taught by a Chinese doctor and greatly rewarded for the first time in his life and felt great grateful to the teacher and the Yucatan Chinese School.

Experts and professors in the field of medical research in China and Mexico, representatives of various enterprises or institutions in the pharmaceutics and health-care industries have attended the dialogue forum. Several local media in Mexico have also conducted follow-up reports on the forum.
