        傳本《說(shuō)文解字》包含相當(dāng)數(shù)量的后人增附字。從顧野王《玉篇》與王仁昫《刊謬補(bǔ)缺切韻》來(lái)看,二氏所見(jiàn)《說(shuō)文解字》并未收錄“轚”篆。而僅見(jiàn)于《毛詩(shī)》《周禮》及《谷梁傳》三部經(jīng)典的“轚”字原本皆當(dāng)作“擊(擊)”,傳世版本或作“轚”,乃后起換旁字,也表明因訓(xùn)解“六藝群書(shū)之詁”而撰作的《說(shuō)文解字》不收“轚”篆不足為奇。有些學(xué)者將“擊”視為“轚”之假借字,其實(shí)是被傳本《說(shuō)文解字》所誤導(dǎo),不可遵從。

        傳本《說(shuō)文解字》(以下簡(jiǎn)稱《說(shuō)文》)包含相當(dāng)數(shù)量的后人增附字。許慎曾明確記錄所撰《說(shuō)文》540部收載的字?jǐn)?shù)為“九千三百五十三文,重一千一百六十三”[1]319,經(jīng)過(guò)千百年的輾轉(zhuǎn)傳寫(xiě),脫訛增附在所難免,段玉裁《說(shuō)文解字注》云:“今依大徐本所載字?jǐn)?shù)核之,正文九千四百卅一,增多者七十八文;重文千二百七十九,增多者百一十六文。此由列代有沾注者,今難盡為識(shí)別,而亦時(shí)可裁偽,去太去甚?!盵2]781即便不計(jì)脫略的篆文,大徐本《說(shuō)文》的增附字已然接近200,故段玉裁刪篆21字①,其余言當(dāng)刪而未刪者亦復(fù)不少;王筠《說(shuō)文釋例》也專設(shè)“刪篆”一目[3]329-336。不過(guò)前人未能確切剔除的《說(shuō)文》增附字尚多,“轚”即其一例。

        大徐本《說(shuō)文·車部》:“轚,車轄相擊也。從車、從毄,毄亦聲。《周禮》曰‘舟輿擊互者’。”[1]303歷來(lái)學(xué)者對(duì)此字的形義多存疑問(wèn)。

        首先從文字結(jié)構(gòu)看,“轚”篆形聲兼會(huì)意,為“毄”之分別文?!墩f(shuō)文·殳部》:“毄,相擊中也。如車相擊,故從殳、從?!盵1]66但“毄”已從,即車軸頭,而“轚”篆說(shuō)解“車轄相擊也”之“轄”為豎貫于車軸頭的金屬件(或稱“鍵”),車轄相擊即謂車相擊[2]729,故“毄”下又增“車”而特制專字“轚”殊嫌疊床架屋,無(wú)甚必要。王筠《說(shuō)文解字句讀》卷六補(bǔ)正云“‘轚’字兩車亦重復(fù)”[4]112,俞樾《兒笘錄》卷一“毄”條以為“轚”字“復(fù)無(wú)理”[5]567,皆具卓識(shí)。

        另外,“轚”篆說(shuō)解所引《周禮》“舟輿擊互者”,與傳本《周禮·秋官·野廬氏》“凡道路之舟車轚互者,敘而行之”頗相出入,“擊”字更與本篆字頭不相應(yīng)*《集韻》入聲錫韻吉?dú)v切小韻“轚”字注云:“《說(shuō)文》:車轄相擊也,引《周禮》‘舟輿擊互者’?!彼鶕?jù)《說(shuō)文》引《周禮》與大徐本完全相同。見(jiàn)丁度等編《宋刻集韻》,(北京)中華書(shū)局2005年版,第217頁(yè)。。阮元《周禮校勘記》云:“《周禮》‘舟車’許(慎)引作‘舟輿’為異;‘擊’當(dāng)從《周禮》作‘轚’,許正引此經(jīng)以證‘轚’字也?!盵6]506馬宗霍《說(shuō)文解字引經(jīng)考》云:“許引經(jīng)證字,則‘擊’當(dāng)從《周禮》作‘轚’,方與本篆相合。擊所以訓(xùn)轚,引經(jīng)蓋轉(zhuǎn)寫(xiě)者涉注文‘(車轄相)擊’字而誤耳,小徐本不誤,可證?!?馬宗霍《說(shuō)文解字引經(jīng)考》,(北京)中華書(shū)局2013年版(以下不再標(biāo)注版本),第734頁(yè)。按馬氏之說(shuō)與鈕樹(shù)玉《說(shuō)文解字校錄》、王筠《說(shuō)文系傳校錄》、陳瑑《說(shuō)文引經(jīng)考證》及田吳炤《說(shuō)文二徐箋異》等皆相同,參見(jiàn)丁福保編纂《說(shuō)文解字詁林》“轚”篆下相關(guān)各條,(北京)中華書(shū)局1988年版,第13882-13883頁(yè);又黃桂蘭《〈集韻〉引〈說(shuō)文〉考》也以為“大徐、《集韻》引‘轚’作‘擊’,形訛也”,(臺(tái)北)花木蘭文化出版社2012年版,第591頁(yè)。按小徐本《說(shuō)文》引《周禮》作“轚”,合于《野廬氏》原文,且與本篆無(wú)殊,故大徐本引文“舟輿擊互者”之“擊”不免被視為訛字。這是大徐本《說(shuō)文》的另一重疑問(wèn)。

        以上根據(jù)顧野王《玉篇》與王仁昫《刊謬補(bǔ)缺切韻》,基本可以確定“轚”字非許慎《說(shuō)文》原本所收載,無(wú)怪乎傳世版本特別是大徐本令人懷疑。

        號(hào)稱“五經(jīng)無(wú)雙”的許慎撰作《說(shuō)文》的主要目的是訓(xùn)解“六藝群書(shū)之詁”(許沖《上〈說(shuō)文解字〉表》),如果經(jīng)典未用“轚”字,那么《說(shuō)文》不收“轚”篆也就不足為奇。事實(shí)上,上文指出的僅見(jiàn)于《毛詩(shī)》《周禮》《谷梁傳》三部經(jīng)典之“轚”字皆存疑問(wèn)。黃以周曾對(duì)昭公八年《谷梁傳》及《詩(shī)·小雅·車攻》毛傳兩例詳加考釋,《禮書(shū)通故》卷四二《御禮通故》第十五條云:

        實(shí)則《車攻》毛傳與《谷梁傳》所言“試御之法”,不過(guò)是說(shuō)御者驅(qū)車入轅門(mén)時(shí)嚴(yán)禁車兩轊頭與門(mén)旁旃竿發(fā)生碰擊?!盾嚬ァ访珎鳌伴g容握,驅(qū)而入,擊則不得入”,孔穎達(dá)疏云:

        其門(mén)之廣狹,兩軸頭去旃竿之間各容一握。握人四指為四寸,是門(mén)廣于軸八寸也……若驅(qū)之,其軸頭擊著門(mén)傍旃竿,則不得入也,所以罰不工也。[13]428

        《谷梁傳》“流旁握,御轚者不得入”,楊士勛疏云:

        徐邈云:“流,至也。門(mén)之廣狹足令車通,至車兩軸去門(mén)之旁邊一握。握,四寸也。轚者不得入,轚謂掛著,若車掛著門(mén),則不使得入,以恥其御拙也?!庇^范(甯)之注,似與徐邈同。[13]2435

        孔疏、徐說(shuō)殊無(wú)差別,幾可互換*孔疏“所以罰不工也”之“工”字阮元??瘫咀鳌耙弧保钍稀睹?shī)??庇洝吩疲骸伴}本、明監(jiān)本、毛本‘一’誤‘工’?!笔且圆徽`為誤。見(jiàn)阮元編《清經(jīng)解》第5冊(cè),(上海)上海書(shū)店1988年版(以下不再標(biāo)注版本),第393頁(yè)。日本杏雨書(shū)屋藏單疏本及足利學(xué)校藏十行本皆作“工”,參見(jiàn)孔穎達(dá)《南宋刊單疏本毛詩(shī)正義》,(北京)人民文學(xué)出版社2012年版,第178頁(yè);長(zhǎng)澤規(guī)矩也編《毛詩(shī)注疏》第2卷,《足利學(xué)校秘籍叢刊》,(東京)汲古書(shū)院1973年版,第1105頁(yè)。徐邈云“以恥其御拙也”,恥拙即罰不工,也可證孔疏作“一”為訛字,故上引已加校改。,可見(jiàn)《毛詩(shī)》與《谷梁傳》兩部經(jīng)典但用“擊”字亦已足矣,其早期版本當(dāng)僅作“擊”*“擊(擊)”為“毄”之孳乳字,西漢前期“毄”與“擊”并行不悖,而“擊”已屬常用字,參見(jiàn)張守中《張家山漢簡(jiǎn)文字編》,(北京)文物出版社2012年版,第87、319頁(yè);陳松長(zhǎng)《馬王堆簡(jiǎn)帛文字編》,(北京)文物出版社2001年版,第123、493頁(yè);駢宇騫《銀雀山漢簡(jiǎn)文字編》,(北京)文物出版社2001年版,第106、380頁(yè)。“轚”字尚未見(jiàn)于出土材料。。而漢以前的其他文獻(xiàn)也表明“轚”不過(guò)是“擊(擊)”的后起換旁字,漢人尚無(wú)用例,適足與經(jīng)典相互參證。

        對(duì)于傳本《說(shuō)文》“轚,車轄相擊也”,孫詒讓《周禮正義》嘗引《戰(zhàn)國(guó)策·齊策一》“主者循軼之途也,轄擊摩車而相過(guò)”加以疏證,以為“‘轄擊’即所謂‘轚’也”*孫詒讓《周禮正義》,第3489頁(yè)。按馬宗霍《說(shuō)文解字引經(jīng)考》說(shuō)同,見(jiàn)第734頁(yè)。。按古籍中與“轄擊”相類似者尚有“轂擊”:

        古者使車轂擊,馳言相結(jié),天下為一。(《戰(zhàn)國(guó)策》卷三《秦策一》)[14]141

        臨淄之途,車轂擊,人肩摩。(《戰(zhàn)國(guó)策》卷八《齊策一》)[14]539

        齊人甚好轂擊相犯以為樂(lè),禁之不止。(《晏子春秋》卷六《內(nèi)篇雜下》)[15]372

        云行于途,轂擊于道。(《鹽鐵論》卷二《刺權(quán)第九》)[16]121

        合從連衡,馳車轂擊。(《漢書(shū)》卷六四《嚴(yán)安傳》載嚴(yán)氏上書(shū);《史記》卷一一二《主父偃列傳》載此書(shū)倒言之曰“擊轂”)[17]2811[18]3558

        雖智者勞心于內(nèi),辯者轂擊于外,猶不若未然之時(shí)也。(《漢書(shū)》卷九四《匈奴傳》載揚(yáng)雄上書(shū))[17]3816

        其例甚夥,不似“轄擊”之罕見(jiàn)。段玉裁在“轚”篆下特意強(qiáng)調(diào)“諸書(shū)亦言車轂相擊”[2]729,良有以也。

        經(jīng)典另一例《周禮·秋官·野廬氏》“舟車轚互者”,鄭玄注“舟車轚互,謂于迫隘處也”不單獨(dú)訓(xùn)釋“轚”,則所見(jiàn)《周禮》本作“擊”字的可能性更大。陸德明《經(jīng)典釋文》“轚互”條注云“音計(jì),沈古的反”[12]133,沈重即據(jù)“擊”字注音*張參《五經(jīng)文字》卷下車部“轚”字注云:“工第反,又音擊?!甗轚]互者’見(jiàn)《周禮》?!?《叢書(shū)集成初編》本,商務(wù)印書(shū)館1936年版,第64頁(yè)。注中“轚”字原脫,據(jù)文意補(bǔ))可與《經(jīng)典釋文》相互參看。大徐本《說(shuō)文》“轚”字注音為入聲古歷切,也與沈重音無(wú)異。小徐本為去聲己惠反,則合于《釋文》首音,與《玉篇》及《刊謬補(bǔ)缺切音》亦相同。見(jiàn)徐鍇《說(shuō)文解字系傳》,(北京)中華書(shū)局1987年版,第274頁(yè)。。賈公彥《周禮疏》云:“云‘轚互者’,謂水陸之道舟車往來(lái)狹隘之所更互相擊,故云轚互者?!盵13]884其實(shí)也依“擊”字為說(shuō)。阮元《周禮校勘記》援引《說(shuō)文》“轚”篆疏釋經(jīng)文,又云“鄭注當(dāng)本作‘舟車擊互’,猶許君(慎)云‘車轄相擊也’,故賈疏釋注云‘車互相擊’”[6]506,足見(jiàn)高明。唯阮校補(bǔ)正又云“鄭引經(jīng)文不當(dāng)改字”,尚拘泥于傳世俗本也。

        既然《毛詩(shī)》《周禮》《谷梁傳》三部經(jīng)典的“轚”字皆不大可能見(jiàn)于許慎之前的早期版本,那么因發(fā)揮“五經(jīng)之道”而撰作的《說(shuō)文》不收“轚”篆恰在情理之中。

        今已考明“轚”實(shí)為“擊(擊)”之后起換旁字,《說(shuō)文》原本并未收錄,則類似上揭黃以周《禮書(shū)通故》的觀點(diǎn)皆有待商榷。如《說(shuō)文》“毄”篆說(shuō)解“如車相擊”之“擊”字,段玉裁校改為“轚”[2]119,朱駿聲[20]540、范祥雍[14]543分別謂上引《戰(zhàn)國(guó)策·秦策一》“使車轂擊”、《齊策一》“車轂擊”之“擊”為“轚”的假借字,迷惑于傳本《說(shuō)文》,而與黃以周不分軒輊。

        許慎《說(shuō)文》古本眇焉悠邈,不可復(fù)見(jiàn),傳本羼雜的后人增附字確如段玉裁所言“難盡為識(shí)別”(見(jiàn)上引)。言有易而言無(wú)難,在缺乏版本鐵證的情況下,《說(shuō)文》增附字的剔除只能通過(guò)充分排比存世文獻(xiàn),加以細(xì)致合理的考辨,逐字逐部進(jìn)行探究;而段玉裁、王筠以來(lái)《說(shuō)文》學(xué)大家未獲一睹的新出材料如原本《玉篇》殘卷等,尤須特別重視。

        《說(shuō)文》增附字的甄別不僅有助于恢復(fù)許慎舊觀,促進(jìn)《說(shuō)文》本身的研究,對(duì)文字學(xué)、經(jīng)學(xué)等相關(guān)學(xué)科也不無(wú)裨益,應(yīng)當(dāng)引起學(xué)界的關(guān)注。

        An Enquiry into “轚” inShuowenJiezi

        ShuowenJiezi(Shuowenin short) by Xu Shen, a Confucian philologist of the Eastern Han Dynasty, is the first seal character dictionary in China, which systematically analyzed character patterns and examined the origin of characters. The original edition had 9,353 character entries, plus 1,163 graphic variants. As the dictionary was copied many times in hundreds of years, blend and omission were inevitable. Nearly 200 characters were blended in the edition revised by Xu Xuan in the early Song Dynasty. The character “轚” discussed in this paper is one of those blended characters. The identification and discrimination of the blended part — in this case in light of an enquiry into “轚” — cannot only restore Xu Shen’s original text and promote the research intoShuowenJiezi, but benefit philology, Confucianism and other relevant studies.

        Gu Yewang of the Liang Dynasty compiled a Chinese character dictionaryYuPianbased onShuowenJiezi. The original edition had long been lost, and the extant edition was adapted during the Tang and Song Dynasties. According to the original edition ofStrayFragmentsofYuPiandiscovered in Japan in the late Qing Dynasty, each character entry was evidenced by quotations fromShuowenJiezi, but quotations for “轚” were from two Confucian classics,TheRitesofZhouandTheCommentaryofGuliang(GuliangZhuan). This indicates that Gu’s edition did not include “轚”.ZhuanliWanxiangMingyicompiled by the Japanese Buddhist scholar Kūkai (774-835), based on the original edition ofYuPian, can provide further evidences. Based on the manuscripts of the rime dictionaries of the Tang and Five Dynasties unearthed in the sutra caves in Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang,Qieyunby Lu Fayan in the Sui Dynasty did not include “轚”, while the character was supplemented in Wang Renxu’sKanmiuBuqueQieyun(CorrectedandSupplementedQieyun) merely based onTheCommentaryofGuliangannotated by Liu Zhao, but not onShuowenJiezi. This can corroborate Gu Yewang’sYuPian, and also prove that Xu Shen’s edition ofShuowenJiezidid not include “轚”. The character “轚” must have been later blended in the edition that survived.

        Besides theTheRitesofZhouandTheCommentaryofGuliang, another Confucian classicMaoPoetryalso has a variant version that used “轚”, while its current version used “擊”. However,TheCommentaryofGuliangused “轚” while its variant version used “擊”. “擊” was used in other literature before the Eastern Han Dynasty for the meaning of “轚” in the extant edition ofShuowenJiezi. This means that “擊” (or “擊” in the traditional form) was used in the early version ofMaoPoetryandTheCommentaryofGuliang, but the character “轚” was used later in the extant version in the place of “擊” with a radical change. In fact, “轚” inTheCommentaryofGuliangandTheRitesofZhouhas been interpreted by scholars as “擊”, the same as the “擊” in the current version ofMaoPoetry. It can be concluded that “轚” that appeared only in the three Confucian classics was supplemented by later generations, but not the character which Xu Shen would have witnessed. Therefore, it’s not at all surprising that “轚” is not found inShuowenJiezi. Scholars have been misled by the extant edition ofShuowenJiezito take “擊” in some literature as the borrowed character of “轚”.
