UK degree∶ Ph.D. in Stem Cell[干細(xì)胞]and Regenerative Biology[再生生物學(xué)], University College London, and MSc in Integrative Neuroscience[整合神經(jīng)科學(xué)], Imperial College London

Why did you want to study in the UK?

I believe the higher education system in the UK has so much to offer. I had the chance to work with globally recognised professors and improve my analytical thinking skills which allowed me to realise my potential.

I also wanted to gain a broader level of social and cultural awareness[意識(shí)], so living in the UK helped me to understand more about accepting differences between people and cultures.

Beyond direct study, how else did you benefit from your education in the UK?

My life completely changed when I decided to study in the UK.

Not only did I work in a laboratory, I also gained exposure[接觸]to new ideas, systems and social creativity that, combined with academic theory, encouraged me to innovate and create new things.

I had the opportunity to join a science policy workshop[研討會(huì)]at the Houses of Parliament[議會(huì)大廈]and also attend a meeting with the Department of Health on developing future leaders in experimental medicine, both of which were fantastic experiences.

Living in the UK also exposed me to social enterprise business models such as The Big Issue, which inspired me to want to do something good for my home country. The Big Issue motivated me to think about how I could create a business model that would not only make a social impact but would secure[確保]a place in a competitive market.

Tell us about the service you created—how does it work?

I created a system whereby anyone living in the Greater Accra or Ashanti regions of Ghana can use their mobile phone to generate[生成]a free and unique six or seven digit code. We then equipped the ambulance service with mobile devices that can find people and their exact location according to the code on their phone, even in areas where there isn’t any network connectivity[連接].

Myself and my team work hard to find new and novel ways to bring convenience to people’s lives in Ghana, plus open up opportunities for businesses. For example, people can also use their code to access a whole host of other social and commercial services like rubbish collection or food and parcel deliveries.

The World Health Organization have recognised the project as crucial in helping to provide timely emergency care across Africa, as well as help healthcare professionals in their battle against infectious diseases, such as cholera and Ebola[埃博拉病毒], by enabling[使能夠]them to identify centres of outbreaks more easily.

How did studying in the UK help to shape your thinking and approach to work?

For me, the tutors at Warwick were particularly good at focusing my learning and areas of research study. They also helped to set my learning in a wider context by exposing us to some of the biggest problems and challenges faced in the world today and encouraging us to come up with ideas and ways to solve them. While I was studying there, I felt as though I could come up with an idea that could really make a difference.

UK degree∶ Professional Certificates in Design Education, Royal College of Arts (RCA)

How did studying in the UK contribute to your success?

My studies at the RCA and the exposure to UK design policy made me rethink my professional role from a social perspective.

After graduating, I joined the RCA’s Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. Working with Professor Roger Coleman, I came to understand how design and architecture can transform people’s lives for the better by involving older and less able users. As a result of my time studying and working in the UK, I now havean extensive UK and international network—a strong platform for future collaboration[合作].

What is the wider impact of your success?

I have introduced over 1,000 master’slevel design students to inclusive design[包容性設(shè)計(jì)]theory and practice during my research fellowship at the RCA. As an advisor and judge to the RCA Student Design Awards, I helped and encouraged over 500 UK and international design students to execute[實(shí)施]social design projects.

In 2013 I was invited by the Hong Kong Vocational Training Council to set up the HKDI DESIS Lab for Social Design Research, as part of an international Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability Network with over 40 centres worldwide.

Over three years the HKDI DESIS Lab has conducted a series of high-impact programmes. The programmes invited hundreds of young design students and citizens in co-designing solutions for crucial social challenges in Hong Kong like population aging and dementia[癡呆]. This work was honoured with an Asian Social Innovation Award, which I received in 2014, and awarded a Social Innovation and Enterprise (SIE) Fund from Hong Kong Government to start the Social Innovation Design Lab (SI.DLab) from April 2017.

By empowering[賦權(quán)]people to confront and solve real-life issues, like aging, living with disability and dementia, and caring for others, I believe we can make Hong Kong a more inclusive society.

Tell us about SciCo and what you have achieved

I was one of the co-founders of SciCo in 2008, a social enterprise that combats[對(duì)抗]scientific illiteracy[文盲]and promotes interactive[互動(dòng)的]STEM education. Through SciCo, we established a series of annual science festivals—Athens, Thessaloniki and Mediterranean.

I also co-created an interactive, digital video-making platform called Schoollab for school students to make science documentaries[紀(jì)錄片]. This is now being used in several other European countries.

How did studying in the UK contribute to your success?

I owe much of my success to my 12 years studying in the UK.

Studying in the UK, I developed a structured way of thinking that is solution-focused.

Also the interactivity in education, which is intrinsic[內(nèi)存的]to SciCo’s success, is something I learned and experienced studying in the UK.

What is the wider impact of your success?

More than 110,000 people have participated in SciCo’s activities with 50,000 visiting the science festivals each year. We currently have requests from 12 towns and rural communities to help them set up their own science festivals. And our educational platforms have reached distant[遠(yuǎn)距離的], underprivileged[窮困的]rural areas.
