The 555foot tallobelisk2is the tallest building in the District of Columbia and by law,no other building in Washington D.C.is allowed to be taller.

It is open from 9:00 a.m.to 10:00 p.m.during the summer months and from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.for the rest of the year.

Construction3work stopped half way due to lack of money.

Inside the Washington Monument are an elevator and an 897step stairway.

The outer walls are made of whitemarble4blocks from Maryland and Massachusetts.The obelisk is also made ofgranite5,and sandstone.

The inner walls of the Monument contain 193 memorial stones on its east and west inner walls.The memorial stones start at the 30foot level and continue to the 450foot level.

The Monument was made and was placed in therotunda6in 1841,but later removed into the east park of theCapitol7.

Views from the top of the structure are over 30 miles.The total area covered by the monument is 106.01acres8.

It is the world’s tallest stonestructure9and the world’s tallest obelisk.

555英尺高的方尖碑是哥倫比亞特區(qū)最高的建筑。按照法律，華盛頓特區(qū)不允許別的建筑物超過它的高度。

夏季月份中，華盛頓紀(jì)念碑開放時(shí)間為9:00至22:00；其余月份開放時(shí)間為9:00至17:00。

由于資金短缺，紀(jì)念碑的建造曾中途停止。

紀(jì)念碑內(nèi)部有一部電梯和897級臺階。

紀(jì)念碑的外墻是由來自馬里蘭州和馬薩諸塞州的白色大理石塊砌成。這座方尖碑則是由花崗巖和沙巖做成。

內(nèi)墻包括裝在東墻和西墻的193塊紀(jì)念石。這些紀(jì)念石砌在30英尺到450英尺的高度之間。

1841年，紀(jì)念碑做好后被安置在圓形大廳內(nèi)，但最后被移進(jìn)了國會大廈的東方公園。
