Sichuan Opera（戲?。﹊s one of many local（當?shù)氐模﹐peras in China. It is popular in the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. Face-changing is a special skill（技巧）in Sichuan Opera.

According to（根據(jù)）history（歷史）, face-changing was a skill for people to scare（驚嚇）the wild（野生的）animals. In the old days, when people met a strong animal, they used to draw（描繪）different patterns（圖案）on their faces to scare the animal away and keep themselves safe. Later on, face-changing was used in operas.

Artists（演藝人士）often change different faces quickly. In this way, they can show different feelings, like anger, sadness and fear（恐懼）. It is said that a master（大師）of face-changing can change masks over 30 times in 5 minutes.

Face-changing usually happens in three ways: “wiping（涂抹）”,“blowing” and “pulling”. “Wiping” is to spread（鋪開）the paint over the face when the artists are playing the opera. “Blowing” can be used when the artist blows the powder（粉末）onto his face in the play.

When one is going to use the “pulling” skill, he has to draw different masks on silk（絲綢）cloth（織物）. He has to cut them into the right size, tie（系上）a small thread（線）to every mask and stick（粘貼）them onto his face. When on the stage（舞臺）, the artist would pull the mask off one after another during（在……期間）different dances.
