[1] 得知周有光先生的去世，我思緒萬千，佇立良久，一時不知用怎樣的語言來表達(dá)。

[2] 111歲的人生，特別是對一個學(xué)者，算是難得的了，但我覺得作為一個 “例外”（他曾說，上帝太忙，把他回歸的事給忘了），他的神話還應(yīng)該再延續(xù)一段。

[3] 我雖沒有見過周先生，但我的心距他很近。他住在北京沙灘后街，我原住北京西四，地理位置接近。更主要的是，我常閱讀、翻譯他的書，關(guān)心著他的事。前兩天，我還向耄耋的父母提起周先生，說他們要像他那樣想得開，勤動腦，活百歲。

[1] After learning the news that Mr. Zhou Youguang had died， I stood there for a moment in silence with a myriad of thoughts and moods all at once， and was at a total loss for words.

[2] He passed away at the age of 111， which is quite rare for a scholar. Concerning his longevity， he once said “God is too busy to bring me back to heavens”， I still nevertheless fantasized that this myth could continue much longer.

[3] Although I was not fortunate enough to meet Mr. Zhou， my heart was very closely related to his. This may partly be due to my residence in Xisi， Beijing， which is not far from Shatan

Houjie where he lived. More importantly， I have been reading and translating his books， and concerned about everything relevant to him all the time. Just several days ago， I mentioned him to my parents， both in their eighties， setting Mr. Zhou as a paradigm for them to follow in terms of optimism， diligence and longevity.

在[1]中，關(guān)于“去世”有多種譯語，比較委婉的有pass away， go off， go aloft， pass on等，此處先用了較為客觀的die，下面再轉(zhuǎn)用他詞；而kick the bucket 等則是較為不敬的用法?！拔宜季w萬千，佇立良久”不妨整合為一句，且前后次序可調(diào)整?！安恢谩Z言來表達(dá)”有多種譯法，如…is beyond expression/any expression； …is hard to put my feelings into words； It cannot be expressed by words等，這里譯得較為通俗。

在[2]中，這里的“例外”顯然是指他的長壽（longevity），故可不必譯成special case， exception等，而括號中的（他曾說，……）也可在譯文中展開。

在[3]中，“沒有見過周先生”沒有譯成I didnt meet Mr. Zhou，而是用了was not fortunate enough to…，表現(xiàn)的是一種情感和愿望，即若是生前能見他一面該多好！“地理位置接近”似可譯成 We are geographically closed，但在兩地之間有了which is not far from…已夠明了。同時，對于“想得開，勤動腦，活百歲”亦不宜按字面意思翻譯，而可做些相應(yīng)變通。

[4] 生于1906年，周先生經(jīng)歷了數(shù)個時代，見證了無數(shù)的社會動蕩。他在日本留過學(xué)，在美國工作過，還游歷了很多國家，同愛因斯坦有過幾次交談。在世時，他每日讀書，關(guān)注國內(nèi)外事態(tài)，百歲之后每年還能出版一兩本書。他精通英、法、日三種外語，一生著述三十余部，涉及經(jīng)濟(jì)、語言、文化等多個領(lǐng)域。他說，老來才知什么是“溫故而知新”。

[5] 當(dāng)然，我最欽佩周先生敢講真話的勇氣。

[4] Born in 1906， Mr. Zhou Youguang experienced several regimes and countless chaotic social conditions around him. He studied in Japan， worked in the United States and travelled to many countries. He even had several conversations with Albert Einstein！ Reading was routinely part of his life. He said， in his twilight years， that he had realized what it meant to “gain new insights through reviewing old knowledge”. Being proficient in English， French and Japanese apart from his native Chinese， he was always well informed and up-to-date with domestic and foreign affairs. In total， he wrote more than 30 books （including one or two books a year after his hundredth birthday）， in the fields of economics， linguistics， culture and other subjects.

[5] Most of all， I admired his courage in speaking the truth.

在[4]中，對于“在世時，……‘溫故而知新”的內(nèi)容，因思維方式問題，在英文里需將內(nèi)容進(jìn)行調(diào)整，即“合并同類項(xiàng)”：“讀書”（reading）是其在世時一種日常行為，可單為一句；“溫故而知新”是其“百歲之后”和“老來”以后的事，故可置于其后，同時還可譯為look for the old so as to learn the new； gain new insights through reviewing old material； gain new knowledge by reviewing old等；至于“一生著述三十余部”和“百歲之后每年還能出版一兩本書”屬同一類別，可合為一處，如In total， he wrote more than 30 books（including one or two books a year after his hundredth birthday） 等?？傊?，要盡力使原語適應(yīng)譯入語的表達(dá)規(guī)律和習(xí)慣。

在[5]中，關(guān)于“勇氣”，通俗的有g(shù)ut， nerve等，如It takes guts to start a new business on your own（自己開公司是需要勇氣的）； Not everyone has the nerve to stand up and speak in front of a large audience（不是每個人都敢在大庭廣眾前講話的）等，但正式些的還應(yīng)為courage，如They ascribed courage to me for something I did out of sheer panic（由于我純粹因驚慌而做的事，他們認(rèn)為我很有勇氣）。

好人才。現(xiàn)在說大師，都是那時候出來的。你可以一個一個查，都是。這是事實(shí)，清楚得很，不用辯論”。

[7] 他認(rèn)為，“什么叫真理呢？真理，可以今天批判它、否定它，明天還可以批判它、否定它，在不斷被批判被否定當(dāng)中能站得住，那才是真理。如果不許批評，那怎么是真理呢？有一點(diǎn)是非常清楚的，意識形態(tài)是不許批評的，意識形態(tài)是用來信仰的。只能信仰，不能批評，所以意識形態(tài)不能跟社會科學(xué)混起來講”。

[8] 這些觀點(diǎn)和話語，閃爍著一個百多歲老人的睿智和人格。如今，斯人已逝，但我相信，人的精神其實(shí)不會隨著其肉體而消亡，其生命力會更加持久。

[7] Concerning “What is truth？”， in Mr. Zhous view， the truth is something that stands up to various criticisms and denials day in and day out. In other words， only by withstanding all kinds of tests， can the truth finally be proven. It is therefore inconceivable that the truth can be accepted when criticism is prohibited. Ideology surely cannot be criticized but can only be embraced， as it is a belief， which should not be confused with social science.

[8] These ideas and viewpoints， embodying the wisdom and character of a centenarian sage， I believe， should not perish with his mortal body but remain in this world indefinitely.

在[7]中，“真理，……那才是真理”其意為真理是怎樣性質(zhì)的一種東西，故不妨用the truth is something that…?！叭绻辉S批評，那怎么是真理呢？”是個反問句，但亦可正譯。“意識形態(tài)是不許批評的，……不能跟社會科學(xué)混起來講”亦多有口語成分，翻譯中可以精簡；而“意識形態(tài)是用來信仰的”意味著“意識形態(tài)即信仰”（as it is a belief），這與動詞的“信仰”（embrace）相吻合。

在[8]中，“斯人已逝”與“隨著其肉體而消亡”可整合考慮，只用一個詞（如perish， pass away等）?！斑@些觀點(diǎn)和話語”為主語，其后的動詞至“……不會”之前可譯為定語和狀語，而“人的精神”與前面的“睿智和人格”實(shí)為同義語，故可融為一體翻譯。
